BUENOS AIRES, MECCA OF TANGO: ACTIVATION PROCESSES, MEGA CULTURAL EVENTS, TOURISM AND DILEMMAS IN THE LOCAL HERITAGE1 PhD. Hernán Morel CONICET-UBA/FFyL [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, we go through the history of the construction of tango as heritage. The period analyzed here begins in the late 90's and extends until 2010. We analyze the factors underlying the cultural policies that came to surface after the "turn" of tango as heritage in Buenos Aires, that is to say, after the activation and promotion of this popular genre on part of the political power (Morel 2009). Through a process analysis, we outline the official efforts behind this recognition. Simultaneously, we examine the impact of tourism as a decisive factor in the political-cultural approaches of the successive administrations. Our aim is especially focused on two main aspects: first, we highlight the heritage-driven policies that went along with the activation process of this genre, and, secondly, we note the consolidation of the cultural policies and actions which had to do, mainly, with the organization of tango events in relation to the promotion of tourism in the city. Under this framework, we explore the negotiations and disputes which, later on, led to the creation of the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and its institutionalization within the official cultural program. In the Basque Country, 1895 marked the birth of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (Basque Nationalist Party), concurrent with the development of the cultural nationalist movement known as the ‘Gaelic revival’ in pre-revolutionary Ireland. In 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended with the destruction of the Spanish Second Republic, plunging Basque nationalism into decades of intense persecution. Conversely, at this same time, Irish nationalist aspirations were realized to an unprecedented degree during the ‘republicanization’ of the Irish Free State under Irish leader Éamon de Valera. -

TEACHERS’ NOTES PRIMARY VIRTUAL TOUR Introduction This set of Teachers’ Notes has been created by the Education Department of the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in order to aid the teaching and interpretation of the ‘Proclaiming a Republic: the 1916 Rising’ Virtual Tour. The virtual tour - Provide teachers and student with an engaging and thought-provoking learning resource based around the aims to: 1916 Easter Rising and the National Museum of Ireland’s expansive ‘Easter Week’ collection of artefacts and images. - Provoke discussion and reflection upon key themes reflected in the exhibition. These include the roles of ordinary people during the Rising, in particular children, young people and women – the choices they had to make and what motivated those choices. These Teachers’ - Provide further information about the key artefacts on each stop of the Notes aim to: Virtual Tour, as well as a brief historical context. - Suggest potential discussion points in order to aid classroom discussion, and to suggest possible solo and group activities for students to engage in, which will enhance their understanding of the material presented. - Provide teachers with the relevant curriculum links, highlighting why each section of the tour was chosen and to explain what we hope to achieve for students at each location. We also consider those who had no A number of themes choice but were impacted by, or caught up in the Rising. A Chronological Particular Timeline of Near East and Europe History
Introduction This compilation was begun merely to be a synthesized, occasional source for other writings, primarily for familiarization with European world development. Gradually, however, it was forced to come to grips with the elephantine amount of historical detail in certain classical sources. Recording the numbers of reported war deaths in previous history (many thousands, here and there!) initially was done with little contemplation but eventually, with the near‐exponential number of Humankind battles (not just major ones; inter‐tribal, dynastic, and inter‐regional), mind was caused to pause and ask itself, “Why?” Awed by the numbers killed in battles over recorded time, one falls subject to believing the very occupation in war was a naturally occurring ancient inclination, no longer possessed by ‘enlightened’ Humankind. In our synthesized histories, however, details are confined to generals, geography, battle strategies and formations, victories and defeats, with precious little revealed of the highly complicated and combined subjective forces that generate and fuel war. Two territories of human existence are involved: material and psychological. Material includes land, resources, and freedom to maintain a life to which one feels entitled. It fuels war by emotions arising from either deprivation or conditioned expectations. Psychological embraces Egalitarian and Egoistical arenas. Egalitarian is fueled by emotions arising from either a need to improve conditions or defend what it has. To that category also belongs the individual for whom revenge becomes an end in itself. Egoistical is fueled by emotions arising from material possessiveness and self‐aggrandizations. To that category also belongs the individual for whom worldly power is an end in itself. -

Identitary issues affect the public dimension of collective life and they often develop Politics, Identity, Territory. into economic, legal, political terms. There are many types of collective identity. We would clarify some of them in order to focus the analytical tools that are necessary to face the phenomena we The “Strength” and “Value” of Nation-State, are interested with: national and regional identities. Crucial in our argument are the concept of “political identity” and its “territorial” dimension. Este artículo surge a partir de la investigación sobre el origen de este material y las transformaciones a través de la historia del tango. Más allá de las vincula- ciones altamente consensuadas con las sonoridades africanas desarrolladas en el Río de la Plata desde la época colonial y con el género milonga du- rante el siglo XIX, en el estudio realizado se identificaron otras apariciones de gran importancia textural en versiones de tangos grabadas durante las décadas del veinte, del treinta y del cuarenta. Argentinian Volunteers Recognized with Awards
Argentinian Volunteers Recognized with Awards Carlos Varga December 4, 2015 Buenos Aires, Argentina—Argentina’s volunteers and volunteer-involving organizations were recognized at a special awards presentation. In support of the United Nations’ International Volunteer Day, UPF-Argentina presented the 5th annual Volunteering and Common Good Awards on December 4, 2015, at the Merchant Navy University in Buenos Aires. The motto for this year’s Day is “Your World is changing. Are you? Volunteer!” Education, Arts and Culture, Inclusion of People with Disabilities, Self-help and Spirituality, Integral Health, Communication, Environment and Ecology, Childhood, Elders, Sports and Recreation, and Community Help. The volunteers and organizations that were recognized represented the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Jujuy, Neuquén, Salta, Santa Fe, and Buenos Aires City. Each of the awardees had the chance to express their feelings and to briefly describe their activities. Ms. Silvia Gabriela Vázquez, secretary of the University Extension of Merchant Navy University, gave the welcoming remarks, while the UN message (Spanish) for this day was read by Ambassador for Peace, Ms. María Teresa Herrera, a member of UPF’s Argentina’s Peace Council. Mr. Carlos Varga, president of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification in Argentina, gave the congratulatory remarks. Ms. Nora Viqueira, a volunteer who has become known for helping senior citizens in Argentina, read the Ubuntu saying, “I am what I am because of who we all are.” The celebration was attended by Mr. Eduardo Borri and Ms. Jackeline Giusti, from the Pacis Nuntii Movement, and promoters of the Universal Peace Flag, Mr.
