Greci, Albanesi e Slavi nel XVI secolo 21 luglio Un mio amico italoalbanese, Virgilio Avato, persona dotta quindi trilingue (gli italoalbanesi colti sanno an- che il greco, la loro lingua liturgica), mi ha fatto conoscere questo straordinario documento. In questo post per motivi pratici pubblico solo la foto dell’inizio, ma me ne sono procurato la versione integrale, di cui darò notizie a chi me le chiederà. In esso i Chimarioti, cioè gli abitanti della costa dell’Albania meridionale, o dell’Epiro settentrionale, se lo preferite, offrono al Papa Gregorio XIII (quello del calendario gregoriano, tanto per capirci) di sottomettersi alla Chiesa cattolica. Non è una scelta religiosa, ma politica. Si faranno cattolici se il Papa convincerà Filippo II, re di Spagna e di mezzo mondo, ma anche re di Napoli, sull’altra riva dello Ionio, a un intervento armato contro i Turchi. Siamo nel 1581, sono passati dieci anni dalla battaglia di Le- panto, e si aspettano che Filippo II, che aveva vinto per mare, venga a vincere anche per terra. In realtà il re aveva ben altri pensieri, ma il documento è di eccezionale interesse storico. Naturalmente è in greco, ed è redatto a Corfù da un letterato, Michail Argyros, nel dialetto colto dell’isola, ma con un’ortografia medievale diversa da quella odierna (ad esempio i nominativi plurali in ες diventano αις) che lo rende a prima vista di difficile lettura. -

In addition, I also deal with the Christian Cultural heritage in the region. In this work these approaChes are within the Context o f archaeologiCal, historiCal and eCClesiastiCal investigation in the sites o f anCient HeaClea and modern Bitola. Key words: Heraclea Lyncestis, Pelagonia, Bitola, Prilep, Via Egnatia The Early Christian world on the Balkan Peninsula began to crumble already in the fourth century, with the invasions and migrations of the peoples and tribes. Vizigoths disrupted Balkan urban conditions in 378, the Huns of Atilla ravaged in 447 and Ostrogoths in 479. After the year 500 the disturbing catastrophes included an earthquake in 518, which seriously damaged the urban centers. Then came the Bubonic plague of 541-2, which was a terrible disaster of unprecedented magnitude, and other epidemics and catastrophes, which were recorded in 555, 558, 561, 573, 591 and 599.1 The invasions, epidemics and economic recession badly affected the population and society of the Eastern Roman Empire. Life in Herclea Lynkestis slowly declined. The Episcopal church was rebuilt in the early sixth century when the latest published coins of Justin II are found. -

Alexander Conze, On the Origin of the Visual Arts, Lecture held on July 30, 1896 [in the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences] translated and edited by Karl Johns Editor’s introduction: Alexander Conze: The Bureaucrat and Art- Historiography Like a number of his colleagues, Alexander Conze (Hanover December 10, 1831- Berlin July 19, 1914), came to classical archaeology after first studying law. His interests and gifts seem to have tended more toward curatorial and administrative work rather than lecturing, and he will be primarily remembered for his part in bringing the Pergamon Altar to the Berlin museums. It may therefore seem ironic that he nevertheless had a great influence as a teacher and probably the greatest influence in another field, which was only later to be defined and brought to fruition in academia by his students as ‘the history of art.’ For the purposes of art historiography it is therefore significant that after nearly ten years at Halle as Extraordinarius, he was called to the University of Vienna as Ordinarius, taught from 1869 to 1877, where Franz Wickhoff, Alois Riegl, Emanuel Löwy and Julius Schlosser, among others, were influenced by his teachings. In the lectures given by Conze to the Prussian academy later in his career, it is not difficult to recognize a similarity to Schlosser in the binocular attraction of more abstract questions on the one hand and the aesthetic appeal of the individual object on the other. Conze also anticipated and presumably inspired the later studies made by Ernst Garger on the ground in relief sculpture and the historical place of the Monument of the Julii. -

Wilkinson 1 Philip Wilkinson Dr. Berghof HCS17 18 June 2017 The Chiasmus of the Augustus of Prima Porta and its Propagandistic Utility Ignoring the frequently sidelined chiasmus of the Augustus of Prima Porta risks overlooking the propagandistic utility of the statue that directs thought and discourse by conveying Rome’s progressively expanding military and political power and preservation of past administrative and civil systems. Most importantly, however, the statue accomplishes this with ambiguous connotations so as to understate the impact of the transformation of Roman government into an autocratic and centralized imperial entity. Scholars such as Arias give passing credence to the chiastic shape of the statue (Arias 277) without noticing how it directs the attention of the audience to progressive and conservative themes. Others, such as Pollini, manage to recognize the chiastic form, also referred to as contrapposto, and the manner in which it creates an aesthetic sense of authority and majesty while comparing the statue to the Greek Doryphoros (Pollini 270). Nonetheless, they fail to recognize the chiastic structure of the statue that moves beyond the expression of individualistic emotions and traits to consist of national narratives that critique and glorify the restructuring of Roman civilization’s allocation of martial and bureaucratic power. Moreover, this previously ignored chiasmus goes further by providing the statue’s audience the ability to understand the progressive and conservative themes from a variety of different angles, settings, and directions of viewing the chiasmus. Going even further, the chiasmus also draws attention in towards a metaphor for Rome’s geopolitical empire: the Wilkinson 2 statue’s cuirass, rich in symbolism and icons recounting the recovery of Rome’s sacred standards from Parthia. -

ERCOLE TIPO FARNESE E TIPO CASERTA: LE REPLICHE DI FORMATO COLOSSALE ABSTRACT L’articolo propone un aggiornamento e una revisione delle sequenze copistiche re- lative allo schema di Ercole in riposo nelle sue declinazioni tipologiche “Farnese” e “Caserta”. Le tredici sculture colossali appartenenti a queste sequenze mostrano tan- te e tali affinità reciproche in termini di composizione e formato da rendere evidente il ricorso a modalità di riproduzione di tipo meccanico-copistico. Le loro dimensioni si aggirano invariabilmente tra i 290 e i 300 cm (senza includere il plinto), pressoché equivalenti a un modulo di 10 piedi nei sistemi di misurazione antichi. Questa cor- rispondenza permette di sviluppare una serie di considerazioni relative non solo alle relazioni reciproche tra i due tipi, ma anche alla nozione di “colossalità” nell’ambito della produzione scultorea di età greca e romana. This paper offers an update and a revision of the replica series related to the Resting Herakles schema in its typological declinations “Farnese” and “Caserta”. The thirteen colossal sculptures belonging to these sequences show so many mutual affinities in terms of composition and format that the use of mechanical methods of reproduction is evident. The dimensional range of these statues is invariably between 290 and 300 cm, almost equivalent to a 10-feet modulus in ancient measurement systems. This cor- respondence allows a number of considerations regarding not only the reciprocal re- lations between the two types, but also the notion of “colossality” within Greek and Roman sculptural production. An Approach to Structural Supports in Roman Marble Statuary Anna Anguissola Introduction In 1933, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the purchase of a Roman marble copy of the Diadoumenos of Polykleitos, a work that counted among the most highly considered masterpieces of antiquity (Fig. 1). Dating varies from the Flavian to the Antonine age, but the statue should probably be assigned to the last quarter of the first century A.D. (Richter 1935 and 1954: 30–32 no. 38; Kreikenbom 1990: 188 no. V.2). Unfortunately, the fillet-binder was in a much poorer state of preservation than what we see today. -

The Case of Hephaistion* by Jeanne Reames University of Nebraska at Omaha [email protected] With the Digital Assistance of Jason Heppler and Cory Starman ABSTRACT An epigraphical survey (with digital mapping component) of Greece and Magna Graecia reveals a pattern as to where Hephais-based names appear, up through the second century BCE. Spelled with an /eta/, these names are almost exclusively Attic-Ionian, while Haphēs-based names, spelled with an alpha, are Doric-Aeolian, and much fewer in number. There is virtually no overlap, except at the Panhellenic site of Delphi, and in a few colonies around the Black Sea. Furthermore, cult for the god Hephaistos –long recognized as a non-Greek borrowing– was popular primarily in Attic-Ionian and “Pelasgian” regions, precisely the same areas where we find Hephais-root names. The only area where Haphēs-based names appear in any quantity, Boeotia, also had an important cult related to the god. Otherwise, Hephaistos was not a terribly important deity in Doric-Aeolian populations. This epigraphic (and religious) record calls into question the assumed Macedonian ethnicity of the king’s best friend and alter-ego, Hephaistion. According to Tataki, Macedonian naming patterns followed distinctively non-Attic patterns, and cult for the god Hephaistos is absent in Macedonia (outside Samothrace). A recently published 4th century curse tablet from Pydna could, however, provide a clue as to why a Macedonian Companion had such a uniquely Attic-Ionian name. If Hephaistion’s ancestry was not, in fact, ethnically Macedonian, this may offer us an interesting insight into fluidity of Macedonian identity under the monarchy, and thereby, to ancient conceptualizations of ethnicity more broadly. -

DIMITRIS DAMASKOS Archaeology and National Identity in the Modern Greek Museum* As was only to be expected, the founding of the Greek state in 1830 marked a confrontation with the past, both distant and not so distant. A past which differed in glory and splendour from the abject and utterly uncertain present nevertheless provided the necessary guarantees which ensured the newly formed state existence and a reason to be part of the European states being created in the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most important identifying feature which shaped the character of the Greek state in the nineteenth century was the constant attempt to demonstrate continuity. The inhabitants of the new state needed to prove to themselves and to others what close ties they had with the ancient Greeks, ties which were pointed up through the language and the supposed common line of descent. This was reinforced by the ideological inclinations of the country's government under the Bavarian King Otto and his successors, who were, unsurprisingly, adherents of the classicizing movement then sweeping Europe. Thus, to give some examples, the structural development of Athens slavishly followed the Neo- Classical style in the construction of the great public and even private buildings. At the same time katharevousa was adopted as the official language of the state and a corresponding Hellenization of any place-names, which showed that in the past other peoples, in no way related to the ancient Greeks, had passed through the glorious land of Hellas, was gradually accomplished. The myth of continuity was supported in academic terms by the supreme historian of the period, Konstandinos Paparrigopoulos.
