MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John.

Galli e che il Ministro ha risposto dando buon affidamento” 1 Con queste parole, scritte da Federico Halbherr 2 a Domenico Comparetti 3, nel settembre del 1908, si conclude la laboriosa genesi 4 della Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene. Il triangolo Comparetti-Halbherr-Pernier offre, nei frequenti scambi epistolari, uno spaccato affascinante e, per molti versi, estremamente attuale della rete di interessi politici e scientifici che avevano mosso, già all’indomani della scoperta di Gortina, l’appassionato roveretano a cercare una sede greca per le sue missioni archeologiche. Da Firenze Domenico Comparetti crea i presupposti politici e individua vari ambiti della ricer - ca scientifica, mentre a Halbherr il giovane Luigi Pernier 5 appare come una figura che possa unire la concretezza dell’attività sul campo ad un’indole diplomatica. “Luigi Pernier (…) si distingue per una speciale vocazione per questi studii di storia e di anti - chità” 6 Pernier era stato selezionato nel 1897 come allievo della Scuola Archeologica di Roma da una severa commissione composta da D. Comparetti, R. Lanciani, F. Halbherr, E. Loewy ed E. De Ruggiero. Il giudizio unanime di idoneità aveva confermato l’ottima prova che qualche mese prima Pernier aveva sostenuto discutendo la tesi di laurea di fronte, tra gli altri, a Giulio Beloch e con Lanciani come relatore.

BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD has become increasingly diverse in recent years due to developments in the historiography of the sciences and the human- ities. A move away from hagiography and presentations of scientifi c processes as an inevitable progression has been requested in this context. Historians of archae- olo gy have begun to utilize approved and new histo- rio graphical concepts to trace how archaeological knowledge has been acquired as well as to refl ect on the historical conditions and contexts in which knowledge has been generated. This volume seeks to contribute to this trend. By linking theories and models with case studies from the nineteenth and twentieth century, the authors illuminate implications of communication on archaeological knowledge and scrutinize routines of early archaeological practices. Typological Studies of Ancient Theatre Architecture: The Tree vs. the Rhizome Model Zeynep Aktüre This paper aims to draw attention to a comparatively recent paradigm shift in studies on ancient theatre architecture that has resulted in a transformation of the rather familiar theatre typology based on Greek-Roman binarism to one which stresses a multiplicity in the ancient performance building types that escapes a representation of the binary model; and explains this change by a parallel shift of emphasis from the idea of commonness to that of plurality in the conceptualisation of European cultural identity. Such contextualisation of the modern historiography on ancient theatre architecture in contemporary Europe, where we find the origins of archaeology as a discipline, would conform to the idea that ‘archaeological interpretation is necessarily a subjective process which is influenced by the socio-political context in which it takes place’ (Jones and Graves-Brown 1996: 19).

And it is German traces that have engraved themselves deeply upon the classical soil (...)– Paul Lindenberg 19022 On the day we hear the classic call, “Hot sausages, have a glass of beer!” at the train station of Angora, Germany will have its foot in the door in Asia Minor.–Friedrich Dernburg 18923 Hegemonic power, or even the attempt to establish it, is accompanied by a multitude of legitimizing discourses that are shaped both in conscious and subconscious debate with it. These discourses have been subject to considerable attention in the research on nationalism and imperialism since the seventies, in contrast to ‘political’ and macroeconomic interests, which had until then enjoyed the main attention of historians. In the research on German imperialism however, the analysis of legitimizing discourses has so far played a minor part. This is due on the one hand to the special circumstances under which German imperialist expansion took place and to a certain reserve towards discourse analysis among the German academic establishment. 4 In particular, the attempt to establish hegemony over West Asia by employing a policy of ‘pénétration pacifique’ towards the Ottoman Empire, one of the major imperialist projects of the Kaiserreich, has been neglected by historians in this regard. The ‘political’ strategies of the German Empire towards the ‘Eastern Question’ have been and still are a subject of interest, and the economic strategies, especially of renowned German companies such as Krupp, Philip Holzmann, and the Deutsche Bank, were a major focus in the seventies and eighties.
