Technical reports are directed primarily toward a worldwide audience and have an international distribution. No restriction is placed on subject matter and the series reflects the broad interests and policies of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, namely, fisheries and aquatic sciences. Technical reports may be cited as full publications. The correct citation appears above the abstract of each report. Each report is abstracted in the data base Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts. Technical reports are produced regionally but are numbered nationally. Requests for individual reports will be filled by the issuing establishment listed on the front cover and title page. Numbers 1-456 in this series were issued as Technical Reports of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. Numbers 457-714 were issued as Department of the Environment, Fisheries and Marine Service, Research and Development Directorate Technical Reports. Numbers 715-924 were issued as Department of Fisheries and Environment, Fisheries and Marine Service Technical Reports. The current series name was changed with report number 925. A Pictorial Guide to the Epibenthic Megafauna of Orphan Knoll (northwest Atlantic) Identified from In Situ Benthic Video Footage. Can. Tech. Rep. Fish. Aquat. Sci. 3375: v + 154 p. In 2010, Fisheries and Oceans Canada led a multidisciplinary oceanographic research mission onboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Hudson to the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Regulatory Area to collect benthic imagery and geological data in support of the identification of vulnerable marine ecosystems. Using the remotely operated vehicle ROPOS, six benthic video transects were collected on Orphan Knoll, a submerged circular continental fragment located 550 km northeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland. High-resolution video footage, digital still images, and specimen samples were collected between 1655 and 3004 m depth across the flanks and plateau of the knoll and Orphan Seamount. In 2007, the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization implemented a ~15,800 km2 closure over Orphan Knoll to restrict the use of bottom- tending fishing gear in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 61/105. However, at the time, its benthic communities and the presence of vulnerable marine ecosystems had not been fully assessed. Here we present a pictorial guide to the epibenthic megafauna enumerated and taxonomically identified from five ROPOS transects collected on Orphan Knoll and Orphan Seamount. The purpose of this report is to provide a visual representation and taxonomic nomenclature scheme of the epibenthic megafauna of Orphan Knoll for use in future monitoring of the benthic communities of this unique topographic feature. v RÉSUMÉ Wudrick, A., Beazley, L., Culwick, T., Goodwin, C., Cárdenas, P., Xavier, J., and Kenchington, E. 2020. REFERENCE Southampton, UK: National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, 96pp. (National Oceanography Centre Southampton Research and Consultancy Report, No. 77) (Unpublished manuscript) ABSTRACT The deep-waters off Nigeria offer many interesting and valuable opportunities for novel science. Through Total E&P Nigeria, and with collaboration with the international SERPENT project as well as with local universities and research organisations, industrial remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were used to carry out high-resolution imaging surveys and make specimen collections in this deep-water region during periods of stand-by time. The first phase of the work was to characterise the deep-water megabenthic assemblages found in the Usan region for the first time using fully quantitative ROV imaging. This was carried out during a visit to Usan in July 2009 on the ROV support vessel Bourbon Diamond. Because the Usan field contains a diverse series of seabed habitats we were also able to assess in more detail the effect of the variable seabed slope on the seafloor animal assemblage particularly with regard to the number and diversity of organisms. A total of 24 invertebrate species were observed at Usan from six phyla.

  • The Pelagic Propagule's Toolkit
The pelagic propagule’s toolkit: An exploration of the morphology, swimming capacity and behaviour of marine invertebrate propagules by © Emaline M. Montgomery A Dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Biology, Department of Ocean Sciences, Faculty of Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland June 2017 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract The pelagic propagules of benthic marine animals often exhibit behavioural responses to biotic and abiotic cues. These behaviours have implications for understanding the ecological trade-offs among complex developmental strategies in the marine environment, and have practical implications for population management and aquaculture. But the lack of life stage-specific data leaves critical questions unanswered, including: (1) Why are pelagic propagules so diverse in size, colour, and development mode; and (2) do certain combinations of traits yield propagules that are better adapted to survive in the plankton and under certain environments? My PhD research explores these questions by examining the variation in echinoderm propagule morphology, locomotion and behaviour during ontogeny, and in response to abiotic cues. Firstly, I examined how egg colour patterns of lecithotrophic echinoderms correlated with behavioural, morphological, geographic and phylogenetic variables. Overall, I found that eggs that developed externally (pelagic and externally-brooded eggs) had bright colours, compared

  • Labrador Shelf SEA Update Area
LABRADOR SHELF OFFSHORE AREA STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT UPDATE Marine Fish and Fish Habitat July 2021 5.0 MARINE FISH AND FISH HABITAT The following sections present an overview of the existing fish species and associated habitats that are found within the Labrador Shelf SEA Update Area. This ranges from key marine trophic groups such as phytoplankton, to higher level consumers such as benthic invertebrates and fish species. Desktop review of existing literature provides an overview for each category of marine fish and fish habitat in the sections below. More specific information on harvesting and environmental observation follows this overview and comes from IK studies, both from existing studies and studies done specifically for the SEA Update. As noted previously, updated information has been provided where available, and where information has not changed, text from the original SEA Report (SEM 2008) has been carried over into this update. For many parts of the Labrador Shelf SEA Update Area, there is strong IK on the distribution of various species; however, there may be geographic bias of the observations towards more populated areas of the coast related to concentration of hunting and travel by community members. Therefore, a lack of mapped data should not be inferred to mean a lack of species presence. In addition, the IK included within this SEA Update does not represent the total land usage or knowledge held by Indigenous groups with respect to the Labrador Shelf SEA Update Area. Fishing for food is a common activity for the Indigenous peoples of Labrador. The NunatuKavut Community Council (2019) shared observations on fish habitat and generally on fish health and populations.
