Despite this, no consensus has been reached among historians as to the reason for their continued use, with the notable exception of ensuring the production of a legitimate heir. This thesis will argue that the creation and maintenance of alliances was the most important motivating factor for English, Castilian and Aragonese monarchs. Territorial concerns, such as the protection and acquisition of lands, as well as attempts to secure peace between warring kingdoms, were also influential elements considered when arranging dynastic marriages. Other less common motives which were specific to individual marriages depended upon the political, economic, social and dynastic priorities of the time in which they were contracted.

The Granada Venegas Family, 1431-1643: Nobility, Renaissance and Morisco Identity By Elizabeth Ashcroft Terry A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction Of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Thomas Dandelet, Chair Professor Jonathan Sheehan Professor Ignacio E. Navarrete Summer 2015 The Granada Venegas Family, 1431-1643: Nobility, Renaissance, and Morisco Identity © 2015 by Elizabeth Ashcroft Terry All Rights Reserved The Granada Venegas Family, 1431-1643: Nobility, Renaissance and Morisco Identity By Elizabeth Ashcroft Terry Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California-Berkeley Thomas Dandelet, Chair Abstract In the Spanish city of Granada, beginning with its conquest by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, Christian aesthetics, briefly Gothic, and then classical were imposed on the landscape. There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors.

The last literary no- tice that we have up to the year 469 is from Hy- datius’s Chronica and we do not hear a word about Galicia until John of Biclar, in his Chroni- con, reports once again on the province begin- ning with the year 550.1 Fortunately, archaeolo- gy has continued to yield finds dating from the fifth and sixth cen- turies thereby illuminat- ing our understanding of this era lacking in liter- ary testimony. There is, moreover, an already known inscription, orig- inating from San Salva- dor de Vairão near Porto that has been the source of controversy regarding its date (see map). • Centers of Marginality in Fifteenth-Century Castile: Critical
CENTERS OF MARGINALITY IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY CASTILE: CRITICAL REEVALUATIONS OF ENRIQUE IV DE TRASTÁMARA, LEONOR LÓPEZ DE CÓRDOBA, AND ALFONSO DE CARTAGENA by BYRON H. WARNER, III (Under the Direction of Noel Fallows) ABSTRACT The concepts of center and periphery are not always mutually exclusive; one often resides within the other. This idea is central to my critical evaluations of three historical personages of fifteenth-century Castile: Enrique IV de Trastámara, doña Leonor López de Córdoba, and Alfonso de Cartagena. Each of these figures had a central political function in the kingdom, yet each also lived a dual existence at the margins of Castilian court. In this dissertation, this duality is examined using a combination of historical sources and contemporary psychology. Certain nuances in the historiographical genre of the Castilian chronicle of the fifteenth century stand out as distinct from the chronicle of previous centuries. One of these is the liberal addition of personal commentary by the chroniclers themselves, breaking to a degree with the paradigm of unadorned, historical “fact-telling.” These personal and often politically charged opinions have significantly contributed to the polarization of modern interpretations of the events and people described in these histories. The incorporation of recent psychological research allows for new readings of the chronicles and new interpretations of the mysteries surrounding Enrique IV, Leonor López, and Alfonso de Cartagena. • COAT of ARMS of KING FERDINAND the CATHOLIC Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512 Coat of Arms of King Ferdinand the Catholic Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512
COAT OF ARMS OF KING FERDINAND THE CATHOLIC Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512 Coat of Arms of King Ferdinand the Catholic Kingdom of Naples(?), 1504-1512 Marble 113 x 73.5 cm Carved out of marble, this coat of arms of King Ferdinand the Catholic represents both his lineage and his sovereignties. It is rectangular, with rounded inferior angles, ending in a point at the base and three points at the chief, a common shape in early sixteenth-century Spain. It is a quartered coat of arms, with its first and fourth quarters counterquartered with the arms of Castile-Leon, and its second and third quarters tierced per pale with the arms of Aragon, counterquartered per saltire with Sicily and counter-tierced with the arms of Hungary, Anjou and Jerusalem referring to Naples, besides the enté en point for Granada. It is crested by an open royal crown that has lost its rosette cresting, and it was originally supported by an eagle, as shown by the claws on the third and fourth quarters and the springing of the wings and the neck above the crown. Ferdinand the Catholic and the arms of Castile-Leon The counterquartered for Castile-Leon features, in the first and fourth quarters, a crenelated castle with three merlons, an emblem for the Castilian monarchs adopted by Alfonso VIII shortly before 1176 and, in the second and third quarters, the crowned lion rampant of the monarchs of Leon, of pre-heraldic origins, around the mid-eleventh century. The combination emerged as a symbol for the union of the kingdoms of Castile and Leon in 1230 effected by Ferdinand III the Saint.

  • Our Dearest Brother
OUR DEAREST BROTHER -3- OUR DEAREST BROTHER: STUDIES IN CHANGING EXPRESSIONS OF KINSHIP IN THE RECORDS OF MEDIEVAL ROYALTY by Michael Andrews-Reading 1 Abstract Surviving royal documents from the medieval period not infrequently include statements of relationship. A detailed examination of representative collections of these documents demonstrates a gradual move away from purely factual statements of close relationships in some cases. By the time of the late Middle Ages, the use of formal and stylised kinship terms had come to reflect political and pragmatic relationships instead of strict blood ties. This article asks when such statements can be relied on as fact and seeks to chart potential changes in royal attitudes towards expressing relationship as a function of diplomatic and administrative language. Foundations (2009) 3 (1): 3-35 © Copyright FMG and the author Being related to royalty has long been considered a desirable thing. Shakespeare2 writes with a gently mocking tone of “those that are akin to the king, for they never prick their finger but they say, ‘There is some of the king’s blood spilt’”, in the hope that this may elicit a question about the relationship from among their hearers. This interest remains a feature of modern genealogical research. A wide range of royal letters and related documents addressed from or to the medieval kings of England has survived in the National Archives. Several collections of these, normally arranged by monarch, have been published, notably in the great Victorian run of publications effected under the aegis of the Master of the Rolls as keeper of the public records, called the Rolls Series (Knowles, 1963).
