From the start, Martin & Clews has had a forward-thinking approach to property development, keeping a close scrutiny on both national and international markets, using modern techniques for cost efficiency in construction and providing innovative financial packages for both the developer and investor. During the first few years of trading, Martin & Clews successfully brought to market in excess of 2,000 units on behalf of an international consortium of developers. Advising on which product to bring to market in different areas of the Costa del Sol and a targeted off-plan sales campaign resulted in the successful sale of all units before construction began. Later, Martin & Clews began to expand its area of operation and was involved with the acquisition of three major developments on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Providing full consultancy services, the company worked with the developer from inception, including land acquisition, concept design, sales and marketing platforms, project management, finance negotiation and successful coordination of construction companies. More than 500 units were successfully delivered to market. The company also partnered with a large golf development in Mexico and successfully packaged and sold in excess of 200 plots in just two months. knowing the market Developers of sustainable environments • www.martinclews.com • 00 34 952 766 893 martin & clews 7 Martin & Clews is a company that prides itself on its ability to respond to an ever changing market. This ambitious 10 – 12 year project is at the forefront of urban planning of unspoilt and will become a blueprint for sustainable, responsible development in the future. Location Los Pandos covers an area of 830 hectares in the locality of Almansa in Albacete beauty province. Part of the larger region of Castilla la Mancha, Los Pandos, with its own vineyard, is at the heart of one of the country’s best known wine producing regions. Within just one hour’s drive of Los Pandos, are the airports of Alicante, Murcia and Valencia. Each also boasts a sea port with Valencia’s being the second largest logistical port in Spain. There are train links from all three to Madrid and Almansa is also well connected by road with motorway links to all major towns and cities. Although present infrastructure is more than adequate for the development of Los Pandos, a high speed rail network – the AVE - is already underway. The central hub of the new rail connection, due for completion in 2010, will be Almansa. History Los Pandos has had a rich historical past. Passed through the hands of generations of the same family for centuries, the land has been documented since 1674. In 1707, Los Pandos found itself at the heart of one of the most decisive battles of the War of Spanish Succession – the Battle of Almansa. Five years of fierce fighting had resulted in coalition armies scrambling for Europe, on one side the allied Franco- Spanish Bourbon army led by a British Duke and on the other, the Anglo-Portuguese Austro troops led by a French Earl. On 25th April they clashed, in what Frederick the Los Pandos Logo Great later described as “the most incredible battle of our century”. Up to this point, Designed to represent the the Anglo-Portuguese had been the stronger of the warring factions and their dream rolling hills of Los Pandos, it’s of a Federal system looked set for the future for Europe. In just two hours, at Los Pandos, wine making and the ecological importance of the four seasons the Bourbons won the battle thus changing the course of history. With their vision that make it all possible. for consolidating Spain and creating a Centralist Europe – independent countries governing themselves, a new model for Europe was born. Had the battle on that fateful April day gone the other way, today’s Europe would look very different. At one time, wine from Castilla la Mancha was thought to be the highest quality in the country. Quantity overtook quality turning the region into Spain’s highest producer but to the loss of its reputation. Thankfully, the region is returning to its roots and no more so than at Los Pandos. There, Martin & Clews are marrying traditional methods of production with innovative methodology with the aim of once again, producing superior wine to rival those of La Rioja and

Interaction and Perception in Anglo-German Armies: 1689-1815 Mark Wishon Ph.D. Thesis, 2011 Department of History University College London Gower Street London 1 I, Mark Wishon confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT Throughout the ‘long eighteenth century’ Britain was heavily reliant upon soldiers from states within the Holy Roman Empire to augment British forces during times of war, especially in the repeated conflicts with Bourbon, Revolutionary, and Napoleonic France. The disparity in populations between these two rival powers, and the British public’s reluctance to maintain a large standing army, made this external source of manpower of crucial importance. Whereas the majority of these forces were acting in the capacity of allies, ‘auxiliary’ forces were hired as well, and from the mid-century onwards, a small but steadily increasing number of German men would serve within British regiments or distinct formations referred to as ‘Foreign Corps’. Employing or allying with these troops would result in these Anglo- German armies operating not only on the European continent but in the American Colonies, Caribbean and within the British Isles as well. Within these multinational coalitions, soldiers would encounter and interact with one another in a variety of professional and informal venues, and many participants recorded their opinions of these foreign ‘brother-soldiers’ in journals, private correspondence, or memoirs. These commentaries are an invaluable source for understanding how individual Briton’s viewed some of their most valued and consistent allies – discussions that are just as insightful as comparisons made with their French enemies.

THE 1711 EXPEDITION TO QUEBEC: POLITICS AND THE LIMITATIONS OF GLOBAL STRATEGY IN THE REIGN OF QUEEN ANNE ADAM JAMES LYONS A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham December 2010 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT To mark the 300th anniversary of the event in question, this thesis analyses the first British attempt to conquer the French colonial city of Quebec. The expedition was a product of the turbulent political environment that was evident towards the end of the reign of Queen Anne. Its failure has consequently proven to be detrimental to the reputations of the expedition‘s commanders, in particular Rear-Admiral Sir Hovenden Walker who was actually a competent and effective naval officer. True blame should lie with his political master, Secretary of State Henry St John, who ensured the expedition‘s failure by maintaining absolute control over it because of his obsession with keeping its objective a secret.

Since that time, the internet has made a great deal more material available, and there have been useful publications on French and British history. I have therefore revised and rewritten the earlier work with a slightly different title. While the book is substantially longer, and extends through the eighteenth century, the essentials of the argument in the previous version remain the same: this is the story of a long- lived but essentially minor family in France, just within the fringes of the gentry, whose lineage can be traced in the male line back to the mid-fourteenth century, who prospered from their Huguenot connection, but acquired their greatest good fortune when they were forced into exile in England. • Introduction
Introduction In , prior to the outbreak of the conict over the Spanish succession, the combined landforces of the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland numbered approximately , men. At that time an entity called the “British Army” did not exist yet. Instead, each of the three kingdoms had its own, national, mil itary establishment. ese establishments were ocially legally independent, though they owed allegiance to the same monarch as their supreme commander. In reality the English Establishment was the more dom inant one, and under the reign of Charles II regiments raised in Ireland and Scotland could serve on the English Establishment in time of war. During the Nine Years’ War, under the reign of William III, the three establishments became even more intermingled, resulting in a de facto British Army. Aer this war the Irish Establishment became roled as the stacking place for (English) regiments otherwise reduced, a process that had been started already under Charles II. e English Establishment numbered just , men in , organised in four troops of guards, seven regi ments of horse, three regiments of dragoons and ve regiments of foot. In Scotland there were about , men in one troop of guards, two regiments of dragoons and four regiments of foot. e Irish Establishment was the largest with , men in two regiments of horse, three of dragoons, and twenty regiments of foot with twentyone battalions between them. In early the number of regiments had risen to six troops of guards, eleven regiments of horse, twentytwo regiments of dragoons and regiments of foot (of which three of guards).
