City of Seaside WASTELINE A Publication for GreenWaste Recovery Single-family Customers Winter 2021

A New Threshold for Organics Assembly Bill 1826 (AB 1826) passed in 2016 requiring any entity that produced four cubic yards or more of total per week to their organic waste. Over the past four years, many businesses and multi-family residences across the peninsula have adopted new business practices to comply with this state law compost their food waste and/or yard trimmings. In September 2020, CalRecycle passed a reduction in the threshold for compliance, so any entity that produces two cubic yards or more of total waste per week must now comply with AB 1826. This reduction means organics composting will be required of almost all businesses and multi-family dwellings across the Monterey Peninsula: businesses must compost food and/or yard trimmings, and multi-family dwellings must compost yard trimmings. Do Your Part: Keep These Out of the Blue Cart

It can be a challenge to remember what goes where, especially with plastics! GreenWaste's environmental outreach coordinators have noted some of the most common misplaced plastic items contaminating the blue recycle cart are film plastics and black plastics.

Film plastics are items such as grocery bags, bread bags, sandwich bags, videotape, and stretch wrap. These items are not accepted at the Materials Recovery Facility for processing. There may still be film plastic recycling options available to you, such as take- back bins located at your local grocery store.

Black plastics are also commonly misplaced items. You might see black plastics used for takeout food, rotisserie chicken containers, baked goods, and condiment containers. Black plastics are not accepted at the Materials Recovery Facility for processing because when they are melted and mixed with other plastics, the integrity of the colors is affected, making it unusable by the manufacturers of recycled goods.

We need your help to keep recycling clean! To learn more about the items that need to stay out of the recycling container visit WhatGoesWhere.info or download the What Goes Where app to learn what, where, and how to recycle at home and work. Preventing Masks and gloves go in the trash With the new health safety measures in place, there has been an uptick in litter from masks and gloves, which are harming the environment. Personal protective equipment is polluting parking lots, sidewalks, and even beaches. To minimize the waste created by these safety measures, consider using a reusable cloth mask. If you need to use disposable protective equipment, be aware that they are NOT recyclable! Please make sure to place them in the trash. Thank you for doing your part to protect your neighbors, city, and environment! Green Kids
