She talks about the troubles of South Asian Women immigrants’ .In her novels female protagonists are the sufferer of identity crisis and they struggle on the ground of foreign land, east to west. In her novel The Holder of the World we see that Hannah Easton, female protagonist of the novel, she begins her journey from west to east but she not only searches her identity but also explores the various layers of multiculturalism. This novel is woven with threads of migration, immigration, historical evidence and transformation. The Holder of the World was published in 1993, deals with the story of a puritan woman named as Hannah Easton of seventeenth century. Later on she is known as ‘Salem Bibi’ an immigrant from America, who comes to India, absorbs herself in the Indian culture. Later on she becomes the mistress of Indian King Raja Singh Jadav. -

From Robert Faurison, a lifelong Holocaust denier from France, to David Duke, the American white supremacist politician and former Ku Klux Klan leader, who contended that no gas chambers or exter- mination camps were actually built during the war on the grounds that killing Jews by that method would have been cost-prohibitive and much too bothersome. “The number of victims at the Auschwitz concentration camp could be about 2,007. The railroad to the camp did not have enough capacity to transfer large numbers of Jews,” said another speaker. The conference included an exhibition of various photos, posters, and other materials meant to contradict the accepted version of events, that the Nazis murdered millions of Jews and other “undesirables” in death camps during the war. Palabras Clave: Hawthorne, James, Morrison, Mukherjee, Estereotipos, The Scarlet Letter, The Ambassadors, Beloved, The Holder of The World. A vivid scarlet-red thread extends from Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850) through James’ The Ambassadors (1903), Morrison’s Beloved (1987) and Mukherjee’s The Holder of The World (1993). The scarlet A, Hester Prynne’s oppressive synecdochal sign of the past that becomes a multivalent and pluralist symbol, is retraced in James’ formulation of a “note absolute”,i Morrison’s development of Beloved to the point where her “footprints” fit anyone’s feet,ii and Mukherjee’s emphasis on the “four-lane highway” that passes through Hannah’s life.iii The influence of Hawthorne on James is observed by critics and James himself, Mukherjee’s rewriting of The Scarlet Letter has been discussed by Judie Newman in “Spaces In-Between: Hester Prynne as the Salem Bibi”, and the connection between Hawthorne and Morrison is gestured at by Avery Gordon in Ghostly Matters and extended by Emily Budick in Engendering the Romance. But there has been no critical exploration of how Hawthorne’s attitude towards the past and its representation, as expressed through his scarlet A, is taken up and restitched into Zoe Trodd A Note Absolute: Stereotypes and Synecdoches comparable philosophies of history by these particular literary descendants. -

BEIDLER, COMMITTEE CHAIR FREDERICK WHITING NIKHIL BILWAKESH CASSANDER SMITH METKA ZUPANCîC A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2012 Copyright Matthew Henry Kelley 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This project examines ways in which the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne has been appropriated, inscribed, and variously intertextualized in the writings of a collection of twentieth and twenty-first century authors. From William Faulkner’s work in the 1920’s to Jhumpa Lahiri in the new millennium, the project demonstrates Hawthorne’s lasting impact on culture. Another thing this project demonstrates is that attempts to place Hawthorne at the center of a traditional “school” whose direction is unilateral are inherently limiting. This work examines Nathaniel Hawthorne’s intertextual influence in the work of John Updike, William Faulkner, John Fowles, Maryse Condé, Suzan Lori-Parks, Jhumpa Lahiri and Bharati Mukherjee. By emphasizing an intertextual approach, this project demonstrates that once texts are placed in conversation, individually, those texts can never be read the same way again. Intertextualities move not just forward, but backward. They are not just Anglo-American but global. Finally, this project serves to remind us of the place of reading and writing about literature in our cultural lives. As a way to teach critical thinking, as a mode of understanding how we lived historically, how we live today, and how we may choose to live tomorrow, narrative matters. -
