The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema
The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt. -

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY CASE STUDY PRESERVING MOMENTS THAT MARKED THE HISTORY OF RADIO BROADCASTING Columbia University Libraries’ Rare Book & Manuscript Library acquired legendary radio host Bob Fass’s archive, an extensive collection of radio broadcasts, original photographs, and personal correspondence, in 2016. Highlights from the 600,000 minutes of audio offers in-depth, unfiltered insight into the counterculture of the 1960s and '70s. The recordings were stored on fragile tapes that were at risk of ruin and Memnon helped to preserve these unique audio recordings for the future. The Challenge Columbia University, chose Memnon, a Sony company, to safeguard and provide access to over two decades’ worth of audiotapes from the archive of groundbreaking broadcaster Bob Fass. The complex project was funded in various phases by a grant from the Council of Library and Information Resources and supplemented by a crowd-sourced fundraising initiative. The goal of the project was to digitize and preserve deteriorating ¼” reel-to-reel tapes and audio cassettes. The initial focus was to prioritize undated and unidentified recordings as well as those from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The recordings suffered from a variety of preservation issues due to less than ideal storage conditions and age. Many tapes needed extensive repair, treatment for mold, and unique playback methods to be transferred successfully. A pioneer of “free form” radio for 50 years, Fass is best known for his late-night program Radio Unnameable. During the sixties it featured unscripted appearances by poets and musicians like Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan, and social activists like Abbie Hoffman and Timothy Leary – a forum where listeners could interact with their idols and one another. -

DC 026(2014) Eurimages co-production La Grande Bellezza wins Academy Award® for best foreign language film Strasbourg, 03.03.2014 - La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) received the Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film at Sunday’s Academy Awards® ceremony in Hollywood. Paolo Sorrentino’s film, a co-production between Italy and France supported by the Council of Europe’s fund Eurimages, has already won a European Film Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Commenting on the prestigious award, Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General, Gabriella Battaini Dragoni said: “The Oscar for La Grande Bellezza highlights the strength and the relevance of international co-operation in the European film industry. It is a demonstration of the value of film co- production to our Continent”. Two other co-produced films, also supported by Eurimages, figured in this year’s list of nominations for the Academy Awards®: The Hunt (Denmark-Sweden) and The Broken Circle Breakdown (Belgium- The Netherlands). Since it was set up in 1988, EURIMAGES has supported 1,560 European co-productions for a total amount of approximately 474 million euros. Um Oscar para o Brasil: Discussões para a Construção de uma Publicidade forte do Cinema Nacional 1 Rafael José Bona2 Roberta Del-Vechio de Oliveira e Silva3 Centro Universitário Leonardo da Vinci – UNIASSELVI Resumo Este artigo tem como propósito resgatar o histórico de todas as indicações dos filmes brasileiros indicados no Oscar4 e enfocar principalmente nos últimos dez anos. A partir desse aspecto analisar a importância das indicações, questionamentos das derrotas e suas conseqüências no cinema nacional brasileiro, além de uma abordagem sobre as derrotas dos filmes no Oscar. Um dos objetivos desse artigo é investigar como uma indicação ou vitória no Oscar para um filme brasileiro – nos Estados Unidos – poderiam movimentar toda a indústria cinematográfica nacional, através da Publicidade e Propaganda, que ao mostrar a competência do nosso cinema, incentivariam a produção de novos filmes. Palavras-chave: Cinema Brasileiro; Oscar; Publicidade; Propaganda. 1 INTRODUÇÃO O Brasil já teve uma das maiores cinematografias internacionais do passado e sofreu uma grande crise de produção de filmes no final da década de 1980 por causa da extinção da Embrafilme5 e do Concine6, sendo que as produções do começo da década de 1990 não passavam de dois ou três longas metragens por ano. Mas, eis que um verdadeiro milagre aconteceu entre 1995 e 1996: o cinema brasileiro ressuscitou e ao mesmo tempo ocorre algo inesperado. Em 1996, O Quatrilho, foi indicado ao Oscar de a Melhor Filme Estrangeiro, depois de 33 anos sem aparecer por Hollywood e 1 Trabalho apresentado à Sessão de Temas Livres do XXVIII – Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências da Comunicação.
