Diana Davies Photograph Collection Finding Aid Collection summary Prepared by Stephanie Smith, Joyce Capper, Jillian Foley, and Meaghan McCarthy 2004-2005. Creator: Diana Davies Title: The Diana Davies Photograph Collection Extent: 8 binders containing contact sheets, slides, and prints; 7 boxes (8.5”x10.75”x2.5”) of 35 mm negatives; 2 binders of 35 mm and 120 format negatives; and 1 box of 11 oversize prints. Abstract: Original photographs, negatives, and color slides taken by Diana Davies. Date span: 1963-present. Bulk dates: Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1969, 1987, 1992; Philadelphia Folk Festival, 1967-1968, 1987. Provenance The Smithsonian Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections acquired portions of the Diana Davies Photograph Collection in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ms. Davies photographed for the Festival of American Folklife. More materials came to the Archives circa 1989 or 1990. Archivist Stephanie Smith visited her in 1998 and 2004, and brought back additional materials which Ms. Davies wanted to donate to the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives. In a letter dated 12 March 2002, Ms. Davies gave full discretion to the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to grant permission for both internal and external use of her photographs, with the proviso that her work be credited “photo by Diana Davies.” Restrictions Permission for the duplication or publication of items in the Diana Davies Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. Consult the archivists for further information. Scope and Content Note The Davies photographs already held by the Rinzler Archives have been supplemented by two more recent donations (1998 and 2004) of additional photographs (contact sheets, prints, and slides) of the Newport Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Poor People's March on Washington, the Civil Rights Movement, the Georgia Sea Islands, and miscellaneous personalities of the American folk revival. -

Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition. -

David Amram in Denver May 10 - 13 * David Amram has composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, written many scores for Broadway theater and film, including the classic scores for the films Splendor in The Grass and The Manchurian Candidate; two operas, including the ground-breaking Holocaust opera The Final Ingredient; and the score for the landmark 1959 documentary Pull My Daisy, narrated by novelist Jack Kerouac. He is also the author of two books, Vibrations, an autobiography, and Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac, a memoir. A pioneer player of jazz French horn, he is also a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from 25 countries, as well as an inventive, funny improvisational lyricist. He has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, who chose him as The New York Philharmonic's first composer-in-residence in 1966, Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Dustin Hoffman, Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, E. G. Marshall, and Tito Puente. Amram's most recent work Giants of the Night is a flute concerto dedicated to the memory Charlie Parker, Jack Kerouac and Dizzy Gillespie, three American artists Amram knew and worked with. It was commissioned and recently premiered by Sir James Galway, who also plans to record it. Today, as he has for over fifty years, Amram continues to compose music while traveling the world as a conductor, soloist, bandleader, visiting scholar, and narrator in five languages. He is also currently working with author Frank McCourt on a new setting of the Mass, Missa Manhattan, as well as on a symphony commissioned by the Guthrie Foundation, Symphonic Variations on a Theme by Woody Guthrie. -

Interviews Laura Marling: Dubiously Religious, Certainly Without Pretension By Sentimentalist Staff on July 8, 2008 Donned in skinny jeans, mary janes and an oversized white t-shirt, Laura Marling fits any niche in downtown Manhattan; with her doe eyes and pastel skin, she’s seemingly innocent. Her blonde hair is beginning to show the darker roots that have grown in and her charming British accent is pleasantly soothing. She asks if it’s okay to have a cigarette as we sit out on a bench in a park in lower Manhattan. It’s breezy and satisfyingly warm in the shade, and as I begin to ask questions she coos at squirrels as they run over the cobblestones beneath the green wooden bench on which we sit. Despite her extraordinarily wise lyrics and hauntingly mature voice, there’s still an innocence that echoes through her – she’s untainted by the effects of urban stereotyping or climbing a social ladder. Instead she’s timid and coy, completely in her element as she sits in a haven of nature amidst a metropolis. “I grew up in the countryside in England, so I’m not really used to this fast-paced kind of environment,” she says as her eyes widen at the quickly passing cars. Her debut album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, is unveiled this summer that is both intimate and delicate, two elements that easily describe her as well. What was the incentive behind Alas I Cannot Swim? I have a fascination with death and religion. Not in such a morbid way, but how it affects you and the psychological effects of religion and how your relationship with the world effects your relationship with yourself. -

Lee When poet-activist Ed Sanders published the first issue of his “Marijuana Newsletter” in 1964, cannabis legaliza- tion was not on America’s political radar. “Time is NOW for a Total Assault on the Marijuana Laws!” Sanders declared. “We have the facts! Cannabis is a non-addictive gentle peace drug!” Calling for “an in- telligent, sensitive public campaign” to change the law, Sanders advocated “pot-ins at government headquarters, public forums and squawking, poster walks, hemp farm disobedience.” For these early marijuana activists, the “Hemp is the WAY!” he proclaimed. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY CASE STUDY PRESERVING MOMENTS THAT MARKED THE HISTORY OF RADIO BROADCASTING Columbia University Libraries’ Rare Book & Manuscript Library acquired legendary radio host Bob Fass’s archive, an extensive collection of radio broadcasts, original photographs, and personal correspondence, in 2016. Highlights from the 600,000 minutes of audio offers in-depth, unfiltered insight into the counterculture of the 1960s and '70s. The recordings were stored on fragile tapes that were at risk of ruin and Memnon helped to preserve these unique audio recordings for the future. The Challenge Columbia University, chose Memnon, a Sony company, to safeguard and provide access to over two decades’ worth of audiotapes from the archive of groundbreaking broadcaster Bob Fass. The complex project was funded in various phases by a grant from the Council of Library and Information Resources and supplemented by a crowd-sourced fundraising initiative. The goal of the project was to digitize and preserve deteriorating ¼” reel-to-reel tapes and audio cassettes. The initial focus was to prioritize undated and unidentified recordings as well as those from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The recordings suffered from a variety of preservation issues due to less than ideal storage conditions and age. Many tapes needed extensive repair, treatment for mold, and unique playback methods to be transferred successfully. A pioneer of “free form” radio for 50 years, Fass is best known for his late-night program Radio Unnameable. During the sixties it featured unscripted appearances by poets and musicians like Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan, and social activists like Abbie Hoffman and Timothy Leary – a forum where listeners could interact with their idols and one another.
