Graded on a Curve: Patty Waters, Live September 17, 2019 By Joseph Neff No discussion of the 1960s avant-garde is complete without touching upon the work of singer Patty Waters, as she predated such vocal iconoclasts as Yoko Ono and Linda Sharrock. Additionally, she was a prime influence on Patti Smith and perhaps most pertinently, Diamanda Galas. Live, her latest and first new release on vinyl since 1966, was captured in performance at the First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn on April 5, 2018 with the pianist from her debut Burton Greene, bassist Mario Pavone, and percussionist Barry Altschul. Dedicated to the great pianist Cecil Taylor on the day of his passing, its run of 1,000 LPs and 750 CDs is out September 20 via Blank Forms. “People ask me (about) my influences, I would have to say Patty Waters. They say other people and I say, nahh, Patty Waters, listen to Patty Waters. I listened to her twice. That’s all it took for some grain of inextricable influence” —Diamanda Galas Patty Waters’ two greatest albums, Sings from 1965 and College Tour from the following year, combine to secure her reputation as an avant vocal priestess of the first order. They were cut for the storied label ESP Disk, an enterprise known for its stable of fringe ’60s artifacts ranging from the proto out-rock of The Godz and Cromagnon, assorted strains of folk including The Fugs, Pearls Before Swine, The Holy Modal Rounders, Erica Pomerance, and Ed Askew, and most prominently, a ton of the era’s avant jazz; in fact, it was saxophonist Albert Ayler who introduced Waters to ESP’s owner-operator Bernard Stollman. -

The Ed Sanders Archive Including the Fugs, Peace Eye Bookstore, Fuck You/ A Magazine of the Arts, Allen Ginsberg, d.a. levy, Claude Pélieu, and John Sinclair Ed Sanders backstage at the Fillmore East with his friend Janis Joplin, March 8, 1968. Introduction The Ed Sanders Archive is a remarkable record of the legendary poet, writer, editor, publisher, activist, Fugs founder and icon of American counterculture. Beginning with his first poems written while he still lived in Missouri (1955), it encompasses all of Sanders’ expansive life and career. The archive is a unique resource that allows for the exploration into Sanders’ seminal contributions to the Mimeo Revolution and American poetry, as well as his legacy in the American underground and counterculture with his political activism and his music. The archive itself has long been spoken of by scholars as well as fans. Sanders organized the archive over a 10-year period. Due to its size it is housed in multiple buildings and locations at his and his wife Miriam’s home in Woodstock, NY, where they have lived since 1974. Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit – April is the Cruellest Month June 6, 2019 By Andy Beta Unreleased at the time, the Japanese guitarist's elemental free jazz opus provides the missing link between Albert Ayler, Merzbow, and Acid Mothers Temple. Few record labels provided succor for generations of freaks, seekers, and weirdos like ESP-Disk. Founded by lawyer Bernard Stollman in New York’s bustling East Village in 1963 to promote the language of Esperanto, it soon pivoted to another kind of international language— music—introducing to the world the searing, ecstatic jazz of Albert Ayler and Sun Ra as well as the stoned folk of the Fugs and Pearls Before Swine. The ESP catalog still sounds like little else in recorded music, radically obliterating all preconceived notions of what a saxophonist, a jazz singer, percussionist, or rock band might sound like. If only the label had gotten to the singular guitar of Masayuki “Jojo” Takayanagi. That was the plan back in 1975 at least, when Stollman first encountered the Japanese guitarist and offered to put out a record on ESP-Disk. Takayanagi and band recorded a session in the spring of that year only to lose touch with Stollman over the summer. By fall the label was bankrupt and Takayanagi’s April is the Cruellest Month sat on a shelf, only seeing release on CD in Japan some 16 years later. Now rescued by New York’s Blank Forms label, April attempts to properly answer the big “What if?”s around it and to properly place Takayanagi as paterfamilias for the likes of Keiji Haino, Merzbow, Acid Mothers Temple, Michio Kurihara, and the PSF roster. -

One such creative is Sam Jablon, a Brooklyn-based artist whose work you’ve likely seen if you frequent the Bowery. Emblazoned on a wall outside Ideal Glass’s 2nd Street space is OUTDEMONSOUT, Jablon’s public homage to the seminal Lower East Side rock band The Fugs, whose politically charged music provided a soundtrack for anti-Vietnam activism in the mid and late ’60s. BULLETT caught up with Jablon to discuss art, poetry, politics, and the joys of binge- watching something mindless after a long day of fighting the demons that be. Name: Samuel Jablon Age: 31 Location: Brooklyn, NY Occupation: Artist Summer plans? I’m splitting my time between Brussels, where I’m doing an artist residency, and here in New York. Favorite artists? Jimmie Durham, Eva Hesse, Kerry James Marshall, and Louise Bourgeois are a few of my favorites. Guilty pleasure? Binge watching horrible TV shows. The content is irrelevant. Can you explain a bit about the idea behind the mural? How did you come up with it? I’ve done public performances and guerrilla poetry readings, which address passersby on the street, so I like engaging with people in situations outside of the physical spaces of the art world. This is the first painting that I created while in view of the public, and it’s also the largest. I wanted it to have meaning, but also feel mysterious and difficult. -

Although BTC has been dealing in Counter Cultural material pretty much since we’ve existed as an entity, we’ve never issued a catalog strictly devoted to the subject. When we started in the mid 1980s, some of the “Cultures” whose artifacts we’re now dealing in didn’t even exist. This goes to show, I guess, that the definition of Counter Culture is constantly evolving. I asked Ken Giese on our staff to define Counter Culture in ten seconds. Go! - “Arggghhh, hippies, it was the hippies, it was always the hippies for me!” Similarly incoherent responses were received from others on our staff, although Ashley Wildes well-considered “What?” stands out. Matt Histand probably did best when he said it was “Anything that youth was rebelling against that has since become part of the culture.” Obviously much of one’s perspective on this is or can be generational. And indeed the friction created by the interaction of the generations might actually be the proper definition.
