Forest Management Planning
Forest Management Planning Basic knowledge Welcome to the Forest Management Planning Module. This module is intended for forest owners and managers wishing to plan SFM activities and to enable monitoring and control. The module provides information and links to tools and case studies, to guide users in planning the implementation of SFM at the forest management unit level. Forest management is the process of planning and implementing practices for the stewardship and use of forests and other wooded land targeted at specific environmental, economic, social and cultural objectives. Forest management planning is a fundamental component of SFM, and it may be required at various scales, from local to national; this module focuses on the local (or forest management unit) scale. The role of forest management planning is to determine and express the objectives of forest management in a specified area of forest and to set out the steps to be taken to achieve those objectives. Forest management planning is important for many reasons. For example, it can: help forest owners and managers identify what they want from the forest and provide an efficient course of action to meet those objectives; provide a means by which stakeholders can participate in forest management and ensure clarity on the roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders; ensure the existence and functionality of the resource while also increasing its value (e.g. specifying where, how and under what conditions and constraints the resource may be used); save time and reduce costs (e.g. in road construction and wood harvesting); reduce risks and their impacts and avoid potentially costly forest management mistakes (e.g. -

Specifically, we examined development from an old-growth condition in 1930 through 2016 across three different disturbance histories: (1) clearcut logging prior to the 1938 hurricane with some subsequent damage by the hurricane (“logged”), (2) severe damage from the 1938 hurricane (“hurricane”), and (3) severe damage from the hurricane followed by salvage logging (“salvaged”). -

Tree Squirrels When the public is polled regarding suburban and urban wildlife, tree squirrels generally rank first as problem makers. Washington is home to four species of native tree squirrels and two species of introduced tree squirrels. Native Washington Tree Squirrels The Douglas squirrel, or chickaree (Tamiasciurus douglasii) measures 10 to 14 inches in length, including its tail. Its upper parts are reddish-or brownish-gray, and its underparts are orange to yellowish. The Douglas squirrel is found in stands of fir, pine, cedar, and other conifers in the Cascade Mountains and western parts of Washington. The red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, Fig. 4) is about the same size as the Douglas squirrel and lives in coniferous forests and semi-open woods in northeast Washington. It is rusty-red on the upper part and white or grayish white on its underside. The Western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus, Fig. 2) is the largest tree squirrel in Washington, ranging from 18 to 24 inches in length. -

Annual NMGS Fall Field Conference Guidebooks Every fall since 1950, the New Mexico Geological Society (NMGS) has held an annual Fall Field Conference that explores some region of New Mexico (or surrounding states). Always well attended, these conferences provide a guidebook to participants. Besides detailed road logs, the guidebooks contain many well written, edited, and peer-reviewed geoscience papers. These books have set the national standard for geologic guidebooks and are an essential geologic reference for anyone working in or around New Mexico. Free Downloads NMGS has decided to make peer-reviewed papers from our Fall Field Conference guidebooks available for free download. Non-members will have access to guidebook papers two years after publication. Members have access to all papers. This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. However, guidebook sales represent a significant proportion of our operating budget. Therefore, only research papers are available for download. Road logs, mini-papers, maps, stratigraphic charts, and other selected content are available only in the printed guidebooks. Schroeder COLUMBIA The Magazine of Northwest History, Winter 2003-04: Vol. 17, No. 4 “The flesh of the cock of the Plains is dark, and only tolerable in point of flavour. I do not think it as good as either the Pheasant or Grouse." These words were spoken by Meriwether Lewis on March 2, 1806, at Fort Clatsop near present-day Astoria, Oregon. They were noteworthy not only for their detail but for the way they illustrate the process of acquiring new information. A careful reading of the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (transcribed by Gary E. Moulton, 1986-2001, University of Nebraska Press) reveals that all of the species referred to in the first quote are grouse, two of which had never been described in print before. In 1803-06 Lewis and Clark led a monumental three-year expedition up the Missouri River and its tributaries to the Rocky Mountains, down the Columbia River and its tributaries to the Pacific Ocean, and back again. Although most of us are aware of adventurous aspects of the journey such as close encounters with indigenous peoples and periods of extreme hunger, the expedition was also characterized by an unprecedented effort to record as many aspects of natural history as possible. No group of animals illustrates this objective more than the grouse. The journals include numerous detailed summary descriptions of grouse and more than 80 actual observations, many with enough descriptive information to identify the species. What makes Lewis and Clark so unique in this regard is that other explorers of the age rarely recorded adequate details. -

Identification of fauna associated with Gopher Tortoise burrows at Florida Atlantic University Preserve and Jonathan Dickinson State Park Laura De Souza Dr. Evelyn Frazier and Jessica Huffman Research Proposal Application for the Honors Thesis Program July 2018 1 Introduction The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is endemic to the southeastern United States, and threatened throughout its distribution from extreme eastern Louisiana, to southern South Carolina and Florida1,2. The gopher tortoise is an herbivorous chelonian with a life span of up to 60 years according to Florida Fish and Wildlife. Individuals may become reproductively mature typically around 7 years of age and females egg clutch range from 1-15 eggs in each reproductive season3 where they are mating and laying eggs. Gopher tortoise are originally said to be mating and courting from the month April-June, and laying eggs from May to June4 . However, evidence are being shown that due to warmer temperature, areas in Florida such as Jupiter shows mounting evens from February to December, carcasses of hatching from January to December, and all year round courtship4. The gopher tortoises excavate burrows that can be up to 4 m deep and 12 m long. Chelonians, are ectothermic and rely on their environment to regulate internal body temperatures. Tortoises of the genus Gopherus have been observed using thermoregulatory behaviors such as seeking shade, frothing, rapid breathing, and basking 5. Tortoises and other species have been observed going outside of the burrows to bask and warm up their bodies along with multiple other ectothermic species such as snakes, frogs, and lizards. When temperatures were too extreme, the tortoises, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and insects would seek shelter in the shade of the burrows 6.
