However, many may not have been aware that 86 year old Homestead Aged Person’s Hostel resident in Allora, Les Bland had more than a passing involvement with football in this area. Recently a contingent of Allora based Warwick players donned the club colours to spend time with Les and get a feel for what it was like in the World game’s formative years around Warwick. Mr. Bland certainly got a thrill to meet Dominic Benz, Cameron Davey and Sam Benz resplendent in their Warwick Wolves playing gear. He was presented with a club cap, and is a happy man he still has some touch with the wonderful organisation that is Warwick Football. He relived some of his moments and recollections about those early days when football battled for recognition in a town heavily focused on rugby league. But to borrow a phrase, “if you built it they will come”, and come they did. Players of all ages keen to be involved in the newly formed football club, or soccer as it was more commonly known. The former World War II RAAF serviceman relocated from Sydney to Warwick with his wife and family, working at the Solution in classifieds section Horse & Jockey Hotel until retirement. Les was a well known name in the history of Warwick football. After formerly coaching the Caringbah “Rangers” in Sydney, he became heavily and helping the Warwick club make the initial steps into involved locally in the sport. He initially coached in Warwick in competition soccer. He and his Sydney teams were fortunate 1970, with many young players benefiting from his experience, enough to have access to the influence of former Polish International and Sydney based Development Official, Leo Baumgartner.
