District 5220 Supports Ecuador Quake Relief

The 7.8 earthquake in Ecuador has touched the hearts of District 5220 Rotarians who want to help. Eight Rotary clubs in the Manabi area of Ecuador are affected the most by the devastation. The District 4400 Governor, Manuel Nieto, is requesting assistance in providing drinking water, canned tuna, and insect repellent to victims as part of the immediate emergency relief plan.

Canned tuna is available immediately for purchase since it is produced and distributed in Manabi. After the emergency water is supplied, there is a plan to install six purifying water plants in the area of Manabi to lower the costs of drinkable water.

If you want to contribute, make checks payable to Rotary District 5220 Disaster Relief Corp, then mail them c/o District Treasurer Don Murphy, 4510 Sun West Drive, Salida, CA, 95368-8007. Or, bring them to the District Conference in Reno and get them to Don Murphy. As questions arise, please email or call PDG Dave Gallagher, who has a connection to DG Nieto in District 4400.

Yours in service, Ellen Hancock

Stockton Rotary’s World Water Day

The Rotary Club of Stockton celebrated World Water Day with a series of activities during the Month of March. On March 9 officers and directors visited Puentes Farms at their Boggs Tract community gardens site. We reviewed their drip irrigation systems, water and nutrition learning sites, and the general operation of the urban community farm. Some of these activities had been supported through the Stockton Rotary Endowment. Puentes staff explained how a rainwater harvesting system could amplify the benefits of their water-wise irrigation and enhance their water education programs.

At our Club meeting on March 16, Kevin Kauffman, past general manager of Stockton East Water District, presented an extended Thought for the Day on World Water Day. The day, established by UNESCO, celebrated annually on March 22. This year’s theme is “Water and Jobs.” Kevin pointed to larger projects like Stockton East’s groundwater recharge program, which has received national recognition. He also stressed the importance of individual and small actions and pointed out our Club’s involvement in Puentes.

Stockton Rotary will hold its regular noon club meeting at Puentes’ Boggs Tract site on Wednesday, May 18. Visitors are welcome – we are requesting reservations by May 18 for this catered meeting.

Puentes (www.puentesca.org) is a Stockton based non-profit whose programs include urban organic gardening, nutrition education and water education. The Boggs Tract site provides individual family garden plots, the non-profit’s own organic farm site, and education sites.

Madera Sunrise Rotary Sends Ambulance to the Philippines

A retired ambulance from Sierra Ambulance Service in Oakhurst is now back in service in rural communities on the island of Luzon, Philippines.

The vehicle was shipped from San Francisco on February 2, 2016, arriving in Manila on March 13 , which coincidentally corresponded with a group of 31 Rotarians and friends there to deliver wheelchairs to indigent recipients in the Mindanao area.

The Oakhurst Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club arranged the donation of the ambulance from Sierra Ambulance and replaced the engine with a new diesel engine and set of tires prior to turning it over to Past District Governor J. Gordon Kennedy for the International Project. To outfit the ambulance, Kennedy contacted Rotarian Ted Pistoresi of Pistoresi Ambulance to purchase the needed equipment and supplies. Instead, Pistoresi Ambulance donated the needed equipment as well as checking the vehicle completely, repairing the lights and siren to new condition.

Madera Sunrise Rotarian Nathan Soriano, a native of the area of the Philippines receiving the vehicle, took charge of the project, completing the import and shipping process getting it to Manila. The ambulance has been delivered to the Nueve Vizcaya Provential Hospital, which will operate it for the benefit of the mostly rural area of approximately 30,000 under-served residents.
