Serment Azuara, María Rosa Palacios Heredia PREFACIO Si realiza una búsqueda en PUBMED o en Web of Science utilizando los términos “TDAH” o “Trastorno por déficit de atención” su pantalla inmediatamente mos- trará alrededor de cincuenta mil referencias. Si busca en Google: “TDAH/Libro de Déficit de atención” se ofrecerá de manera instantánea un diluvio de títulos al respecto. A partir de esta evidencia surge una primera pregunta: ¿Por qué otro libro sobre TDAH? Como parte de las actividades del actual comité directivo de la Federación Mun- dial de TDAH, los organizadores de este libro pensaron que nuestra federación tiene la responsabilidad única y excepcional de poner especial atención en los pe- diatras, psiquiatras, psicólogos y otros profesionales de la salud mental de países de bajos y medianos ingresos (PBMI). Muchos de estos colegas tienen poco o nulo acceso a información sobre el trastorno. Así, este no es otro libro más en “el océano de literatura sobre TDAH” es el único libro diseñado con varias características para permitir un fácil acceso a los colegas que se encuentran en PBMI. Dichas caracte- rísticas son las siguientes: Primero, el libro es de acceso libre. Los profesionales de PBMI difícilmente pue- den comprar libros de trastornos específicos. Segundo, será un libro electrónico, la distribución de copias impresas es muy cara para la mayoría de los profesionales que viven en PBMI. Las encuestas mundiales recientes han mostrado que más de 3 mil millones de personas globalmente tienen un teléfono inteligente; 6 mil millo- nes lo tendrán en 2020. En nuestra época, los teléfonos inteligentes están más al alcance para cualquier ser humano que el agua potable, la plomería de interiores y la electricidad estable. Tercero, hemos preparado versiones en inglés, español y chino, los cuáles son los tres idiomas más hablados en el mundo, permitiéndonos llegar a cerca del 25% de la población mundial. Cuarto, nuestro libro se enfoca en lo que consideramos los profesionales de los PBMI tienen que saber acerca de “lo esencial” para diagnosticar y manejar el TDAH en su práctica clínica cotidiana. Por esta razón decidimos que se tratara de un libro con 6 capítulos puntualizando lo más relevante en la evaluación y en el cuidado de aquellos afectados por este trastorno y sus familias, así mismo, también incluimos información básica epidemiológica y factores de riesgo. Quinto, este libro estuvo diseñado y escrito por un grupo internacional para una audiencia internacional. Fuimos muy afortunados de contar con un grupo de extraordinarios investigadores y clínicos que escribieron estos seis capítulos y cuentan con una amplia trayectoria de experiencia en diferentes aspectos del tra- tamiento del TDAH.
