It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates. In 2009, Singapore observed the day for the first time along with Italy and India. Schools across the globe are now celebrating World Kindness Day and work with local NGOs such as the Be Kind to People Project and have instituted a Cool To Be Kind Award. We at Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao High school initiated a kindness project for the students of Std VII under the kindness challenge as part of our theme for the year ‘Gratitude is the best attitude’. This was a 21-day challenge where all the students of Std VII maintained a kindness diary where they noted down every day’s act of kindness either done by them or witnessed by them. At the end of the challenge, the students were expected to answer three pertinent questions: 1: How did you feel at the end of this challenge? 2: One change that occurred in you while doing this challenge. 3: Give two reasons why people should be kind to others? Few excerpts from the Kindness Diaries have been compiled into this attached image: While A coming from Warm Smile tution class, I saw is the Universal that a pigeon was badly Language of Kindness injured. 31 School Activities I-CAN Our school Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao High School, secondary section has a remedial section since many years. Though a remedial section is there, very few people are aware of the process of it. Children who come there are usually teased, troubled and bullied by others just because they have some learning difficulty and they are not performing well in academics. This type of teasing many times leads to emotional disturbances and low confidence in these children.

Hence counseling unit decided to participate in the program called "I Can: Design for change" which emphasized on change in the students, school or community in the month of November. As a part of this program 20 children from 8th std. were selected for the process. These students then have decided to sensitize the teachers and students about this topic of learning disability. They have named this program as ‘Be Empathetic and Not Sympathetic’. Selected students along with the ATULYA 2016-17 counselors addressed school including teachers and students through various types of strategies including exhibition, skit, posters, power point presentation, short film, charts, poem and a logo made by the students. The process helped everyone to change their attitudes and understand that how these children must be FEELING.

33 School Activities BUZZ KHS 26.6 The in-house radio program which received a stupendous response the first year has now entered its second year. The catchy tagline ‘Zamaana hum se hai, mahoul hum banate hain’ has captured the attention of all the students. Broadcast on the Public Address system, BUZZ KHS 26.6 is entirely scripted, directed and enacted by the students of Std X. This year was no exception to its cool factor! Every month had a theme and the program was scripted around that theme. One show was dedicated to the palkhi and information about its origins; another dedicated to the soldiers who guard our borders with the special guest invitee being __ from the Indian army. A special musical program was scripted for Teachers’ Day, where some teachers were interviewed about the best part of their life as a teacher whereas other teachers showcased their singing skills and added pizzazz to a beautiful medley of popular songs along with special guest Prashant Naseri. The whole school was thrilled to hear ‘Dhichipadi Dhipang’ and “Zing Zing Zingaat’ and if their choruses were any indication of the popularity of the show, it would suffice to say that Buzz KHS had definitely reached its high point for the year. The final show on 30th September 2016 was dedicated to Road Safety and the Safer Roads, Safer India (SRSI) initiative. 4 Guests were invited as resource people. Kalyanaraman Venkatesan, the founder of Mission Safer Roads, spoke about always giving way to an ambulance. Shubhankar Raykar who represented SRSI and Gaurav Shah (a KHS alumnus) representing Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM) spoke about the necessity of helmets for children especially as pillion riders. Dr. Rahul Shah from Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital spoke about the Golden hour and why it was critical to make sure that accident victims

On the 28th of January 2017, with heavy hearts, the teachers bid the students of Std. X adieu, while reminiscing about their years at school... about the times spent teaching, coaxing for homework, warning about looming exams, yelling for unfinished projects... a few heart-stopping moments here, a few moments of impromptu hilarity there... But most of all, the teachers wished them good luck as they prepared for the Std X Board exams, and told them to face the world with dreams in their eyes, determination in their actions and conviction in their skills. Mrs Munawar Shedbalkar and Mrs. Manisha Kale along with the principal took to the stage to share their thoughts. The students of Std X also staged their own version of awards. The program ended with 240 students jamming on Djembe Drums and the entire auditorium resounded with the rhythm. ATULYA 2016-17

50 School Activities PARICHAY DIWAS – A CAREER-COUNSELING DAY WITH A DIFFERENCE Our school has always believed in a student centric approach. Realizing that need for today’s students is to be aware, not only regarding academics but also the fact that there is a larger world beyond books, our Principal, Mrs. Pallavi Naik and counseling unit initiated ‘Parichay Diwas’ in 2015-16 for students and parents. It is a platform for bring about awareness of the different career options available for students, along with the personal snippets from the panelists themselves about the various challenges and achievements that they faced in their journey. An interactive panel discussion with young professionals conducted in an engaging and fun way, this career-counseling day focuses on offbeat as well as traditional careers. This year, KHS invited 5 esteemed guests: Saurabh Dube (Scientist), Sarita Dhimate (Designer), Dipti Gawit (Manager, Cox and Kings, Kalyani nagar), Hrishikesh Pawar (Choreographer, Contemporary dancer), Tanwi Dixit (Model and Beauty Pageant). This program was anchored by Mrs. Shubhada Karnik (Counselor, KHS) and Mrs. Anamika Dasgupta- Sharma (Career Counselor). All the panel members enthusiastically interacted with the students and parents. Panelists stressed on the need for open communication channels between child and parent at home, the necessity of a BIG dream which would require focus, consistency, hard work, perseverance. They spoke about the need to minimize the use of gadgets and more interpersonal interactions in the real world, along with the need to be adaptable to the situations in life. The program was held on 31st March 2017 and received positive feedback by parents, teachers and students. Parents responded to the program by asking questions and getting elaborate clarifications for the same. It tried to trigger the thinking process of parents to give a chance to choose different career paths and to think out of the box, all the while understanding that while career paths may be different, the approach towards excellence is by far the same: one of never-giving-up and pushing on determinedly. 53 School Activities GRATITUDE IS THE BEST ATTITUDE: PRELUDE TO THE CONCERT

We believe gratitude is an attitude that must be taught and nurtured among children. By learning gratitude children become sensitive to feelings of others, develop empathy and learn important life skills of giving and appreciating. As a prelude to our concert, we organised a ‘Happy Sale’ to celebrate the life lesson of giving back to the community. The articles on sale were made by NGO’s working for the blind, tribal artisans, and orphans. Students, parents and teachers supported the event wholeheartedly. Also we celebrated a week of ‘Happy to Help’ drive wherein our students volunteered to manage the traffic at the school gate both in the morning and afternoon, helped in the school canteen and supported the security guards to man the school gates during school hours. They also helped with canteen preparation and sale of food items. Finally the Expressing Gratitude activity was planned for the non participant students which gave them time to notice and reflect upon things they are thankful for. They had to express their idea of gratitude on paper through art, graffiti or words. We received an overwhelming response from the students and it was indeed a challenge for us to shortlist only 25 unique ideas from a collection of more than 500 expressions. We collated these thoughtful designs into a calendar. Every time you turn a page of this calendar, it gently reminds you to take a moment and appreciate the gift of bounties you are blessed with. ATULYA 2016-17

54 School Activities THE CONCERT FINALE The very wise words of A. A. Milne said so much when he said this: “Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude." ... and the theme that set the tone for the year. We believe that Gratitude is an attitude that must be taught early in children. They learn to empathize with others, become sensitive to the feelings of others, and learn important life lessons of being grateful for everything that they have instead of focusing on what they don’t have. Our school concert titled Gratitude is the Best Attitude held on 21st and 22nd December was an extravaganza. Mr. Anand Nadkarni and Mr. Mohan Nair were invited as chief guests for the concert. If aliens were to land on Earth and ask us humans what we were most thankful for, what would we tell them? The KHS 'Earthlings' took them on a trip of gratitude expressing thanks to nature, culture, literature and people. Weaving dance, music, storytelling, drama, to depict these elements and patriotism and the bounty of mother Earth, there was nothing that we were not grateful for and the aliens understood the point as well. It had captivating performances by the students expressing thankfulness towards the infinite gifts of nature and the splendour of our culture and heritage. It also depicted the legacy of the written word of luminaries from the literary world and saluted the indomitable spirit of humanity. The concert ended with the teachers singing the song of Gratitude “All that I am' which got the audience tapping its feet and wanting more. ATULYA 2016-17 ATULYA

68 Teachers' Professional Development EDUCARNIVAL ‘16

December 2016 brought a very different and exciting experience for us. We, Manisha Kulkarni and Anjali Kulkarni, had the privilege of attending Educarnival, a three day conference, at IIT Delhi. The conference had a number of sessions which included plenary sessions, lectures, paper presentations and group discussions by eminent personalities from the field of education from India and abroad. The inaugural session was addressed by Hon. Manish Sisodiya, Minister of Education. We attended a number of sessions that dealt with student assessment, information management, classroom management strategies, forging a better school- parent partnership, teacher empowerment and motivation. We also got the feel of Finnish viewpoint on education. This session was conducted by Tina Malete from Finland. The takeaway from this conference was the diminishing role of the teacher as a lecturer and increasing responsibility of being a good facilitator. The teaching learning techniques need to be improvised to fit the needs of the 21st century learners. It widened the perspective of our profession. We hope to implement what we learnt and also to attend such conferences in future. ATULYA 2016-17 ATULYA

69 Teachers' Professional Development TEACHER WORKSHOPS “Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection” — Mark Twain In this time and age of rapid and continuous change, it is imperative for us as educators to learn as well. Only when one learns, can one embrace change and grow with it. With that goal in sight, it is only to be expected that teachers work on their professional goals too. KHS has always created opportunities where teachers can work on bettering themselves. Professional Goal setting with PE development for each and every teacher is one of the focal points of 2016-17. One of the highlights this year, was the tie-up with Potter’s Earth, a Pune-based company that works on assessment and development for students and professionals. They undertook a competence mapping session for selected teachers and then worked with each teacher individually to set professional goals for themselves. The program will be taken forward in 2017-18 to help teachers reach their professional development goals and aspire for more.

Workshop Many teachers have attended workshops where they have learnt about classroom management techniques, the use of praise and feedback for students, educator conferences etc. Subject specific workshops like the ones conducted by the Board, Navneet publications, Ratnasagar Publications, Asset workshop for maths teachers among others have seen enthusiastic participation from the teachers. • Mrs. Soni Pradhan and Mrs. Tanuja Shetty attended a 4 day conference at MRA – Panchgani on life skills and value based

O muse of poetry A feeling of silence,

How can I write a poem to please thee? A world without violence

Is it true that a poem must come from heart A bonding of friendship, but I know not where to start With taste of joy in every sip. Poetry must provide peace of mind A subject of pleasure, no matter what one hopes to find To be serene in the shade of nature. Like a sailor on a journey out on sea A tree of beauty a reader must feel free to be Where silence, friendship and calmness A poem can be funny, happy or sad play their duty. it can be mournful, grieving or just glad A crystal of confidence, It can bring tears to your eyes Pure faith and goal have built it dense. or make you jump in surprise A bright ray of light, Poems are created for special reason Where, eradicating terrorism and violence there are more than one for every season is our sight. Holograms pop up in movies such as "Star Wars" and "Iron Man". Very soon 3D Hologram projection theaters will be launched which do not require special glasses. The impact delivered by the holographic illusion reaches audiences at a much deeper level than conventional medium. Our study of the hologram started when we had to do an innovative computer project on the topic “KHS 2030” and had to use our imagination, to ideate such a concept. We had to put forward We used acrylic sheets to make the supporting our views about how technology would be used reflecting frame for the display. The sheets were in the future schools. We included an idea of in the shape of an isosceles triangle and the ratio having a HOLOGRAM in our school. Our Principal of the base to the side was 1:6 and the height of Mrs. Naik liked this idea and gave us an the sheet was 4 feet. We connected these sheets opportunity to present a hologram of a spaceship with each other using epoxy and formed a prism. in our Annual Concert- “Gratitude is the Using a television screen we displayed the Best Attitude”. In the specially designed video which gave the illusion hologram we depicted of an image of the spaceship floating inside the aliens which had prism. landed on Earth. They wanted to know what All the teachers supported and encouraged the earthlings were us for this project. We are grateful to our Library most grateful for. teacher- Pallavi Iyer, our computer teacher- ATULYA 2016-17 Our hologram acted Jyoti Dhore, and our drawing sir- Mr. Bhimsen as the introductory Mahagaokar. We are also thankful to Rajendra piece to show the Chakare for all his technical support. Without the spaceship landing support of all these teachers this entire project on Earth. would not have materialized.
