There are those, it is true, who question the importance of his career and reject the cult of the hero. For them the meaning of liberation is to be found in the study of economic struc- tures, social classes and the international conjuncture, not in military actions and the lives of liberators. In this view Carlyle’s discourse on heroes is a mu- seum piece and his elevation of heroes as the prime subject of history a misconception. -
Film, Photojournalism, and the Public Sphere in Brazil and Argentina, 1955-1980
ABSTRACT Title of Document: MODERNIZATION AND VISUAL ECONOMY: FILM, PHOTOJOURNALISM, AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA, 1955-1980 Paula Halperin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History University of Maryland, College Park My dissertation explores the relationship among visual culture, nationalism, and modernization in Argentina and Brazil in a period of extreme political instability, marked by an alternation of weak civilian governments and dictatorships. I argue that motion pictures and photojournalism were constitutive elements of a modern public sphere that did not conform to the classic formulation advanced by Jürgen Habermas. Rather than treating the public sphere as progressively degraded by the mass media and cultural industries, I trace how, in postwar Argentina and Brazil, the increased production and circulation of mass media images contributed to active public debate and civic participation. With the progressive internationalization of entertainment markets that began in the 1950s in the modern cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires there was a dramatic growth in the number of film spectators and production, movie theaters and critics, popular magazines and academic journals that focused on film. Through close analysis of images distributed widely in international media circuits I reconstruct and analyze Brazilian and Argentine postwar visual economies from a transnational perspective to understand the constitution of the public sphere and how modernization, Latin American identity, nationhood, and socio-cultural change and conflict were represented and debated in those media. Cinema and the visual after World War II became a worldwide locus of production and circulation of discourses about history, national identity, and social mores, and a space of contention and discussion of modernization. -

Pollinators and breeding systems of Tillandsia are poorly known. Recent observations of 85 species revealed previously undescribed characteristics of assumed pollination importance, i.e., floral architecture, flower and inflorescence pigmentations, and phenology. A City Transformed by the Army. Atlantic Networks in San Miguel De Tucumán, 1812-1819

ATLANTIC NETWORKS IN SAN MIGUEL DE TUCUMÁN, 1812-1819 Facundo Nanni * Alejandro Morea ** ABSTRACT Even though the city of San Miguel de Tucumán was located in a peripheral, mountain and remote geography, the wars of independence, and particularly the cantonment of the Ejército Auxiliar del Perú, revitalized its territory and reinforced their integration into the political-military circuits of what we may call Atlantic networks. This city, that had been a battlefeld (1812) but also the main quartering site of that army between 1812 and 1819, doubled its population and underwent transformations derived from the arrival of hundreds of ofcers and troops, with the consequent technical changes derived from the need to build hospitals, fortifca- tions, military factories and other ways of supplying the new arrivals. Understood at the time as an army of porteños, regarding the origin of the majority of its ofcers and sub-ofcialdom, however, a small but signifcant part of the ofcers were Euro- pean, who brought with them the technical knowledge learned during their passage through the Napoleonic Wars. The objective of the article is to analyze the atlantic network created by the arrival of political and military ofcers such as the French Philippe Bertrés (1786-1856), Enrique Paillardell (1785-1815), Jean Joseph D’Auxion de La Vayesse (1775-1829), the Austrian Baron Holmberg (1778-1853), and the Ital- ian Emilio Salvigni (1789-1866), all of them ofcers that brought specifc knowledge (military techniques, mathematics, agronomy) that contributed to their integration into local networks. -

ALMA CHÁVEZ-CARBAJAL Facultad de Biología Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo 58060 Morelia, Michoacán E IGNACIO GARCÍA RUIZ3 CIIDIR – IPN Michoacán Justo Sierra 28 59510 Jiquilpan, Michoacán RESUMEN El estudio florístico realizado en el área de la comunidad indígena de Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro registró la presencia de 108 familias, con 307 géneros, 716 especies y 16 taxa infraespecíficos, de los cuales, 52 son helechos y afines, 16 gimnospermas, 120 monocotiledóneas y 544 dicotiledóneas. Las familias mejor representadas son: Compositae (135), Leguminosae (58), Gramineae (57), Labiatae (26), Solanaceae (21) Orchidaceae (20) y Polypodiaceae (18). 60.7% de las especies corresponden a la forma de vida herbácea (perenne y anual), 19.1% son arbustos, 10.0% árboles, 4.2% trepadoras, 3.3% epífitas, 1.8% parásitas, “saprófitas” 0.5% y acuáticas 0.4%. From this total 52 species belong to pteridophytes, 16 to gymnosperms, 120 to monocotyledons and 544 to dicotyledons. The best represented families, in terms of species number are: Compositae (135), Leguminosae (58), Gramineae (57), Labiatae (26), Solanaceae (21), Orchidaceae (20), and Polypodiaceae (18). 60.7% of the species are herbaceous (either perennial or annual plants); 19.1% are shrubs, 10.0% trees, 4.2% lianas, 3.3% are epiphytic plants, 1.8% are parasites, “saprophytes” amount to 0.5% and aquatics 0.4%.
