There are those, it is true, who question the importance of his career and reject the cult of the hero. For them the meaning of liberation is to be found in the study of economic struc- tures, social classes and the international conjuncture, not in military actions and the lives of liberators. In this view Carlyle’s discourse on heroes is a mu- seum piece and his elevation of heroes as the prime subject of history a misconception.

  • La Política Mediterránea De Gran Bretaña Durante La Guerra Peninsular Great Britain’S Mediterranean Policy During the Peninsular War
PALABRAS CLAVE Guerra de la Independencia; Royal Navy; Menorca; Cataluña; Edward Codrington ABSTRACT The article exposes what was the Mediterranean policy of Great Britain during the War of Independence and the secondary, but very important, place it had in the general strategy in the Napoleonics wars. It explains the role of the island of Sicily as a British base since 1806, as well as that of the island of Menorca and especially that of the port of Mahon since the beginning of the war in Spain in 1808.

‘FAIRLY OUT-GENERALLED AND DISGRACEFULLY BEATEN’: THE BRITISH ARMY IN THE LOW COUNTRIES, 1793-1814 by ANDREW ROBERT LIMM A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY. ABSTRACT The history of the British Army in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is generally associated with stories of British military victory and the campaigns of the Duke of Wellington. An intrinsic aspect of the historiography is the argument that, following British defeat in the Low Countries in 1795, the Army was transformed by the military reforms of His Royal Highness, Frederick Duke of York. This thesis provides a critical appraisal of the reform process with reference to the organisation, structure, ethos and learning capabilities of the British Army and evaluates the impact of the reforms upon British military performance in the Low Countries, in the period 1793 to 1814, via a series of narrative reconstructions. This thesis directly challenges the transformation argument and provides a re-evaluation of British military competency in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

  • Wellington's Army 1809-1814
Wellington's Army 1809-1814 by C.W.C. OMAN M.A. OXON, HON, LL.D EDIN PROFESOR OF MODERN HISTORY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD with illustrations second impression London Edward Arnold 1913 Digitized for Microsoft Corporation by the Internet Archive in 2007, from a University of Toronto copy. PREFACE MUCH has been written concerning Wellington and his famous Peninsular Army in the way of formal history : this volume, however, will I think contain somewhat that is new to most stu- dents concerning its organization, its day by day life, and its psychology. To understand the ex- ploits of Wellington's men, it does not suffice to read a mere chronicle of their marches and battles. I have endeavoured to collect in these pages notices of those aspects of their life with which no strategical or tactical work can deal, though tactics and even strategy will not be found unnoticed. My special thanks are due to my friend Mr. C. T. Atkinson, Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, for allowing me to use the admirable list of the bri- gade and divisional organization of the Peninsu- lar Army which forms Appendix II. It is largely expanded from the article on the same topic which he printed eight years ago in the Historical Review, and enables the reader to find out the precise composition of every one of Wellington's units at any moment between April, 1808 and April, 1814. I have also to express my gratitude to the Hon. John Fortescue, the author of the great History of the British Army, for answering a good many queries which I should have found hard to solve without his aid.

  • Film, Photojournalism, and the Public Sphere in Brazil and Argentina, 1955-1980
ABSTRACT Title of Document: MODERNIZATION AND VISUAL ECONOMY: FILM, PHOTOJOURNALISM, AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA, 1955-1980 Paula Halperin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History University of Maryland, College Park My dissertation explores the relationship among visual culture, nationalism, and modernization in Argentina and Brazil in a period of extreme political instability, marked by an alternation of weak civilian governments and dictatorships. I argue that motion pictures and photojournalism were constitutive elements of a modern public sphere that did not conform to the classic formulation advanced by Jürgen Habermas. Rather than treating the public sphere as progressively degraded by the mass media and cultural industries, I trace how, in postwar Argentina and Brazil, the increased production and circulation of mass media images contributed to active public debate and civic participation. With the progressive internationalization of entertainment markets that began in the 1950s in the modern cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires there was a dramatic growth in the number of film spectators and production, movie theaters and critics, popular magazines and academic journals that focused on film. Through close analysis of images distributed widely in international media circuits I reconstruct and analyze Brazilian and Argentine postwar visual economies from a transnational perspective to understand the constitution of the public sphere and how modernization, Latin American identity, nationhood, and socio-cultural change and conflict were represented and debated in those media. Cinema and the visual after World War II became a worldwide locus of production and circulation of discourses about history, national identity, and social mores, and a space of contention and discussion of modernization.

  • British Losses in the Corunna Campaign
The Napoleon Series British Losses in the Corunna Campaign BRITISH LOSSES IN THE CORUNNA CAMPAIGN By Steve Brown Just how many men did Sir John Moore’s force lose in Spain? The question has long vexed historians. Appendix XIII of Oman Volume 1 provides figures based upon a comparison of returns between October 1808, 19 December 1808 and January 1809, at which time men missing from their regiments may not have re-joined. I have recently discovered a return in WO 1/904 which computed the total men lost in Portugal and Spain as of 6 May 1809, in other words, nearly four months after Corunna. This shows many regiments losing more men than reported by Oman. There are two possible problems with Oman’s numbers. Firstly, he based them upon ‘Effective Strength’ - i.e. men fit to take the field – rather than Total Strength, i.e. the sum of fit men plus sick men or On Command. A second problem is that his disembarkation strengths in England in January 1809 may not include various men who were detached or lost, and sailed with other regiments to other ports in the confusion. It is reasonable to assume that by May 1809 these men were well and truly accounted for with their parent battalions. The ‘Total Other Ranks left in Portugal’ number in the WO return – 1353 other ranks – accords reasonably well with the men used to form the two battalions of Detachments (see http://www.napoleon-series.org/military/organization/c_detach.html) which show a slightly higher number (by only 50 or so), but with the knowledge that these units contained some men who were described as ‘escaped from the French’ or ‘from the frontiers,’ (in other words formerly listed amongst those ‘missing in Spain’ in the War Office return), which would account for the difference.

  • A City Transformed by the Army. Atlantic Networks in San Miguel De Tucumán, 1812-1819
Annals of the Fondazione Luigi Einaudi Volume LIV, June 2020: 57-82 A CITY TRANSFORMED BY THE ARMY. ATLANTIC NETWORKS IN SAN MIGUEL DE TUCUMÁN, 1812-1819 Facundo Nanni * Alejandro Morea ** ABSTRACT Even though the city of San Miguel de Tucumán was located in a peripheral, mountain and remote geography, the wars of independence, and particularly the cantonment of the Ejército Auxiliar del Perú, revitalized its territory and reinforced their integration into the political-military circuits of what we may call Atlantic networks. This city, that had been a battlefeld (1812) but also the main quartering site of that army between 1812 and 1819, doubled its population and underwent transformations derived from the arrival of hundreds of ofcers and troops, with the consequent technical changes derived from the need to build hospitals, fortifca- tions, military factories and other ways of supplying the new arrivals. Understood at the time as an army of porteños, regarding the origin of the majority of its ofcers and sub-ofcialdom, however, a small but signifcant part of the ofcers were Euro- pean, who brought with them the technical knowledge learned during their passage through the Napoleonic Wars. The objective of the article is to analyze the atlantic network created by the arrival of political and military ofcers such as the French Philippe Bertrés (1786-1856), Enrique Paillardell (1785-1815), Jean Joseph D’Auxion de La Vayesse (1775-1829), the Austrian Baron Holmberg (1778-1853), and the Ital- ian Emilio Salvigni (1789-1866), all of them ofcers that brought specifc knowledge (military techniques, mathematics, agronomy) that contributed to their integration into local networks.

  • HISTORIA DE UN HECHO REGIONAL CANÓNICO. EL PASO DE LOS ANDES Elena Duplancic De Elgueta Universidad Nacional De Ciivo En El
Piedra y Canto.

  • As Memórias De Militares Ingleses Na Guerra Peninsular, Como Fontes Da História De Portugal Coetânea - Orientação Bibliográfica
