Nearly 3,000 Patriots were taken prisoner, and valuable ammunition and supplies were lost to the Hessians. The prisoners faced a particularly grim fate: Many later died from deprivation and disease aboard British prison ships anchored in New York Harbor. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The United Provinces (Low Countries) recognize the independence of the United States. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The first salute of an American flag (Grand Union Flag) by a foreign power is rendered by the Dutch at St. Eustatius, West Indies in reply to a salute by the Continental ship Andrew Doria. George Frederick Gabel, Electrician's Mate, Third Class Charles Cline
George Frederick Gabel, Electrician’s Mate, Third Class George was born on March 27, 1912 to Fred Gabel and May Louise Pries. I am not sure why, however, although he went by Fred, his name, from the marriage certificate, was also George Fre- derick Gabel. George was born and grew up in Forest Park, Illinois, near Chicago. I am not sure what happened to George’s parents but his death records show his home of record as Walworth, Wisconsin and his only next of kin as his brother, Chester Robert Gabel, even though he enlisted through Chicago, Illinois. George enlisted on October 26, 1942. Being in Chicago, he most likely went to boot camp in Great Lakes, where he would also have gone to A school. I came to that conclusion due to the fact that the next record I could find was his reporting through the Mare Island Receiving Station to the USS Yorktown (CV-10) for transport to Hawaii on September 15, 1943 as an EM3. He was trans- ferred to COMSUBFORPAC for duty, four days later on September 19. George was received aboard the USS Corvina on October 15th. The “Aloha” signature on the picture above indicates that this was probably the last photo of George. ========================================================= Charles Cline Ghent, Jr. Motor Machinist Mate First Class Charles was born on December 25, 1919, in Carterville, Illinois, a Christmas present for Charles and Maude Ghent. He and his three sisters grew up there in Carterville. His Father passed away in 1936 and his mother raised him until he joined the Navy in St. -

Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018 Part 1: Introduction Peter Lobner July 2018 1 Foreword In 2015, I compiled the first edition of this resource document to support a presentation I made in August 2015 to The Lyncean Group of San Diego (www.lynceans.org) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the world’s first “underway on nuclear power” by USS Nautilus on 17 January 1955. That presentation to the Lyncean Group, “60 years of Marine Nuclear Power: 1955 – 2015,” was my attempt to tell a complex story, starting from the early origins of the US Navy’s interest in marine nuclear propulsion in 1939, resetting the clock on 17 January 1955 with USS Nautilus’ historic first voyage, and then tracing the development and exploitation of marine nuclear power over the next 60 years in a remarkable variety of military and civilian vessels created by eight nations. In July 2018, I finished a complete update of the resource document and changed the title to, “Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018.” What you have here is Part 1: Introduction. NATIONAL REGISTER ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT VESSEL: ex- USS Pigeon (ASR-21) USS Pigeon (ASR-21) underway. Pigeon was the first of two catamaran-hulled SRVs. Location and date are unknown. http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/32/3221.htm Vessel History The USS Pigeon (ASR-21) was the first of two catamaran-hulled submarine rescue vessels commissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1973. Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company in Mobile, Alabama won the construction contract on November 15, 1967. Its keel was laid on July 17, 1968 and it was launched on August 13, 1969. Pigeon was commissioned on April 28, 1973. It was the navy’s third vessel that carried the name. Pigeon was assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, spending most of its career homeported at Naval Base San Diego. Its sistership, the USS Ortolan (ASR-22) was assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia. The Pigeon spent the next two decades in readiness for the submarine disaster that fortunately never occurred. It spent frequent periods at sea conducting drills and training, including general training in saturation diving. The Pigeon successfully performed the navy’s first open ocean working saturation dive when it recovered the engine and ejection seat of an F-14 jet fighter that had crashed in 730 feet of water. The construction and design of the ships were a result of the loss of the nuclear-submarine USS Thresher (SSN-593) in the deep waters of the North Atlantic in April 1963, and the subsequent loss of a hydrogen bomb in the western Mediterranean off of Spain’s coast in January 1966. -

The Anglo/American - Nazi War By CalBear Preface (Page 1) Before examining the actual final conflict between the Western democracies, chiefly Canada, Great Britain, and the United States and Nazi Germany, it is worth reviewing the circumstances that brought the world to that critical juncture. In 1939 Nazi Germany, then also called the “Third Reich” or simply the Reich, had initiated the European Phase of the Second World War with the invasion of Poland. At the time of the invasion Germany was in a state of near alliance with the Soviet Union with Soviet oil and agriculture providing much of Reich’s fuel and food. Poland was supported by both France and Great Britain and the two Western states had made clear that an attack on Poland would lead to war. It has long been debated why the Democracies waited until the Polish crisis to confront the still developing German war machine, but the decisions made in both London and Paris in late summer of 1939 were resolute and both nations believed that their combined power would be sufficient to deter Adolph Hitler’s Germany from aggression against Poland. On September 1, 1939 Hitler demonstrated his contempt for, and disbelief in, the Democracies statements and warnings when the German military (or, as it was known at the time, the Wehrmacht) crossed the international frontier separating Germany and Poland, and unleashed an early version of mechanized warfare against the Polish Army. Shortly after the Reich’s invasion of Poland, its quasi-ally the Soviet Union entered Poland and annexed a significant portion of the country’s eastern provinces.
