In the present work, three poorly described vaginicolids, Pyxicola pusilla, Cothurnia ceramicola and Vaginicola tincta, were isolated from the surface of two freshwater/marine algae in China. In our study, the ciliature of Pyxicola and Vaginicola is revealed for the first time, demonstrating the taxonomic value of infundibular polykineties. The small subunit rDNA, ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region and large subunit rDNA of the above species were sequenced for the first time. Phylogenetic analyses based on these genes indicated that Pyxicola and Cothurnia are closely related.

Members of the genus Thuricola are a highly specialized group of peritrichous ciliates possessing a protective barrel-shaped lorica. The genus presents many difficulties in terms of species separation and definition, and in this context the present study investigates three species by protargol staining and analyses of SSU rDNA sequences. Based on their morphologic characteristics and biotope, they were identified as three poorly known forms in Thuricola, namely T. obconica Kahl, 1933, T. kellicottiana (Stokes, 1887) Kahl 1935 and T. folliculata Kent, 1881, respectively. T. obconica is characterized by possessing curved lorica and a single valve in vivo. T. kellicottiana is distinguished by two valves with a spine on the main valve, and a generally long internal stalk upon which the zooids sit. T. folliculata also has two valves but lacks a spine. The ciliature of the three species are basically similar.

A new morphological species of Paramecium Müller, 1773, was discovered in samples of water with activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is described based on light microscopy and its phylogenetic position hypothesized from 18S-rDNA analyses. Paramecium grohmannae sp. nov. is characterized by a unique combination of features. It is a counterclockwise rotating freshwater Paramecium with body outline intermediate between “aurelia” and “bursaria” forms, two contractile vacuoles, each with one excretion pore and usually nine collecting canals; oral opening slight below body equator; macronucleus ellipsoid to obovoid, measuring ~64 x 24 µm and located in anterior half of body; one (less frequently two) globular endosomal micronuclei

In this study, we investigate the utility of the heat-shock protein 90 gene (Hsp90) as a marker for inferring phylogenetic relationships among hypotrich ciliates. Results: A total of 87 novel Hsp90 gene sequences of 10 hypotrich species were generated. Of these, 85 were distinct sequences. Phylogenetic analyses based on these data showed that: (1) the Hsp90 gene amino acid trees are comparable to the small subunit rDNA tree for recovering phylogenetic relationships at the rank of class, but lack sufficient phylogenetic signal for inferring evolutionary relationships at the genus level; (2) Hsp90 gene paralogs are recent and therefore unlikely to pose a significant problem for recovering hypotrich clades; (3) definitions of some hypotrich orders and families need to be revised as their monophylies are not supported by various gene markers; (4) The order Sporadotrichida is paraphyletic, but the monophyly of the “core” Urostylida is supported; (5) both the subfamily Oxytrichinae and the genus Urosoma seem to be non-monophyletic, but monophyly of Urosoma is not rejected by AU tests.
