TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

The majority (52%) are European, 36% are Eurosiberian, 8% Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean and 4% are Holarctic species. Asphondylia verbasci and Neomikiella beckiana are sub-Mediterranean species, Asphondylia rosmarini, Dasineura oleae, Dryomyia circinans, D. lichtensteini and Janetia cerris, are Mediterranean species. Jaapiella vacciniorum, Contarinia helianthemi and Dasineura daphnes are rare species which occur in mountain and sub-alpine zones of European mountains. Dasineura pyri damaging pear (Pyrus communis) is the only one pest known in Montenegro. KEY WORDS: Diptera, Cecidomyiidae, Fauna, Zoogeography, Check-list, Montenegro INTRODUCTION Only very few data about gall midge galls, as well as of galls of other insect groups, are known from the territory of Montenegro. That was the reason for which we decided to summarize scattered data about occurrence of gall midges and to contribute to their knowledge. We continue in the successive elaboration and enrichment of the knowledge of gall midge faunas in countries of the Balcan Peninsula (SIMOVA - TOŠIĆ et al., 1996, 2000). HISTORY Galls of Dryomyia circinanas on leaves of the oak Quercus macedonica DC found by I. Szyszylowicz at Medun in Monte Negro in 1887 were the first finding of gall midge galls in the territory of Monte Negro (LÖW, 1888). -

Emerging larvae produce stimuli and the host plant responds by producing galls, fascinating structures which provide food and shelter for the developing larvae. Most gall inducing midges are host specific: they are only able to induce galls in a few, often related, plant species. A few species have different feeding modes: among them are saprophagous, fungivorous and predaceous species and some are used in biocontrol. Pseudoperomyia belongs to the lestremiine tribe Micromyini with Anodontoceras as its sister group. The result of a computerized parsimony analysis for the Micromyidi largely supports a recently-published hypothesis on the phylogeny of this taxon. Except for a few occasional species records scattered in the literature, nothing more substantial has been published on tropical lestremiines. 26 species are recorded from the Oriental Region, most of them from India (G agné , 1977). -

McAlpinet Introduction and History LLEF RINGNESISLAND, a low, lobster-shaped member of the Sverdrup E group of the Queen Elizabeth Islands(Fig. 1), is interesting tobiologists because of its extremely rigorous arctic environment and its resulting meager flora and fauna. Together with Amund Ringnes, Borden, Brock, King Chris- tion, Lougheed, Mackenzie King and Meighen Islands (the so-called north- western Queen Elizabeth Islands) it constitutes the most barren part of the high arctic region. Some idea of its bleakness is conveyed by the remarks of others who worked there. Stefansson (1921), on visiting Ellef Ringnes I. in June1916, wrote “I did not see a bladeof grass and the district struck me as the most barren I had even seen”; MacDonald (1961) who spent the field season of 1954 at Isachsen (joint Canada-United States weather station on Ellef Ringnes, Fig. 2), stated, “My immediate impression of Isachsen was of a region of utter desolation”. Summers at Isachsen,the richest locality on the island, are colder than atany other arctic weather station (Saville 1961a).Accordingly, Ellef Ringnes probably supports fewerforms of life than any otherice-free arctic land mass of comparable size (5,000 sq. mi.). The total confirmed flora com- prises 49 species of vascular plants and about 85 of fungi (Savile 1963) ; only 10 species of mammals and 15 of birds have been recorded on the island (MacDonald 1961; Savile 1961b). From my own studies (McAlpine 1962, 1964), it appears that about 75 species of free-living arthropods live there; 55 species of spiders, mites, springtails and insects are actually known now.
