WHITAKER Jrooo Abstract Three new species of fur mites of the family Listrophoridae (Acari) are described from the Round-tailed Muskrat Neofiber alIeni, from Florida, U.S.A. They are Listrophorus laynei sp. n., L. caudatus sp. n. and Prolistrophorus birkenholzi sp. n. Resume Trois nouvelles especes d'acariens pilicoles de la famille Listrophoridae (Acari) sont decrites de Neofiber alIeni, des U.S.A.: Listrophorus laynei sp. n., L. caudatus sp. n. et Prolistrophorus birkenholzi sp. n. BIRKENHOLZ (1963) reported that nearly all Round-tailed muskrats, Neofober aJJeni, he examined were infested with "Listrophoridae, probably an undescribed species." We have now collected additional material from this host and herein describe three new species ofListrophoridae (Acari). Seventeen Round-tailed Muskrats, mostly collected by James N. Layne, were examined for parasites by M.A.S., along with mites from 8 additional muskrats collected earlier by Layne. The muskrats included were collected between 1968 and 1984. Further information on abundance and occurrence on the host will be presented later. Two of the species belong to the genus Listrophorus PAGENSTECHER, 1861 (L. 1aynei sp. n. and L. caudatus sp. n.) and one to the genus ProJistrophorus FAIN, 1970 (P. birkenho1zi sp. n.). Fur mites of other groups (Myobiidae, Myocoptidae and hypopi of Glycyphagidae) were not regularly found on Neofiber aJJeni. The mite fauna of this rodent appears therefore much poorer than that of the Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus, another species o Depose le 5 novembre 1985. -

ARCTIC VOL. 33, NO. 4 (DECEMBER l-), P. 833-841 Western Elements in the Early Thule Culture of the Eastern High Arctic PETER SCHLEDERMANN' and KAREN McCULLOUGH' ABSTRACT. Excavations of Thule culture wintersites in the Bache Peninsula regionon the east coastof Ellesmere Island have yielded a numberof finds which indicate a strong relationship to cultural developments in the Bering Sea region. Specific elements under discussion include dwelling styles, clay pottery, needle cases, a brow band and harpoon heads. Evidence is presented suggesting an initial arrivalof the Thule cultureInuit in the eastern Arctic around 1050 A.D. INTRODUCTION Much has been writtenabout the origins and expansionof the Thule culture into the Canadian Arctic. That this event took place as a result of population move- ment and migration from the west is never seriously contested. However, the timing and causes of this movement are subjects of continuing debate. During the past three summers, excavations have taken placeon several Thule culture winter sites in the Bache Peninsula region onthe east coast of Ellesmere Island (Fig. 1). The winter settlements, containing approximately 150 house ruins distributed over 12 sites, span a 500 to 600 year occupation period which ended about 1700 A.D. The retreat of the Thule culture Inuit fromthis region to the more viable Thuledistrict in northwest Greenland probably marksthe final abandonment of the Canadian High Arctic as a semi-permanent settlement area. Research into the early Thule culture occupation in the study area has been one of several primary objectives, particularly in relation to the temporal and spatial &hities of the NQgdlit and Ruin Island phases initially described by Holtved (1944; 1954). -

ARCTIC VOL. 60, NO. 1 (MARCH 2007) P. 1–6 A Hans Krüger Arctic Expedition Cache on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut ROBERT W. PARK1 and DOUGLAS R. STENTON2 (Received 13 June 2006; accepted in revised form 31 July 2006) ABSTRACT. In 1999 a team of geologists discovered an archaeological site near Cape Southwest, Axel Heiberg Island. On the basis of its location and the analysis of two artifacts removed from the site, the discoverers concluded that it was a hastily abandoned campsite created by Hans Krüger’s German Arctic Expedition, which was believed to have disappeared between Meighen and Amund Ringnes islands in 1930. If the attribution to Krüger were correct, the existence of this site would demonstrate that the expedition got farther on its return journey to Bache Peninsula than previously believed. An archaeological investigation of the site by the Government of Nunavut in 2004 confirmed its tentative attribution to the German Arctic Expedition but suggested that it is not a campsite, but the remains of a deliberately and carefully constructed cache. The finds suggest that one of the three members of the expedition may have perished before reaching Axel Heiberg Island, and that the survivors, in order to lighten their sledge, transported valued but heavy items (including Krüger’s geological specimens) to this prominent and well-known location to cache them, intending to return and recover them at some later date. Two major tholeiitic magmatic pulses characterize HALIP: an initial 120 -130 Ma pulse that affected Arctic Canada and formally adjacent regions of Svalbard (Norway) and Franz Josef Land (Russia). In Canada, this pulse fed lava flows of the Isachsen Formation. A second 90-100 Ma pulse that apparently only affected the Canadian side of the Arctic, fed flood basalts of the Strand Fiord Formation. The goal of this thesis is to improve understanding of Arctic magmatism of the enigmatic HALIP through field, remote sensing, geochemical and geochronology investigations of mafic intrusive rocks collected in the South Fiord area of Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, and comparison with mafic lavas of the Isachsen and Strand Fiord Formations collected from other localities on the Island. Ground-based and remote sensing observations of the South Fiord area reveal a complex network of mafic sills and mainly SSE-trending dykes. Two new U-Pb baddeleyite ages of 95.18 ± 0.35 Ma and 95.56 ± 0.24 Ma from South Fiord intrusions along with geochemical similarity confirm these intrusions (including the SSE-trending dykes) are feeders for the Strand Fiord Formation lavas. -

Wolf-Sightings on the Canadian Arctic Islands FRANK L
ARCTIC VOL. 48, NO.4 (DECEMBER 1995) P. 313–323 Wolf-Sightings on the Canadian Arctic Islands FRANK L. MILLER1 and FRANCES D. REINTJES1 (Received 6 April 1994; accepted in revised form 13 March 1995) ABSTRACT. A wolf-sighting questionnaire was sent to 201 arctic field researchers from many disciplines to solicit information on observations of wolves (Canis lupus spp.) made by field parties on Canadian Arctic Islands. Useable responses were obtained for 24 of the 25 years between 1967 and 1991. Respondents reported 373 observations, involving 1203 wolf-sightings. Of these, 688 wolves in 234 observations were judged to be different individuals; the remaining 515 wolf-sightings in 139 observations were believed to be repeated observations of 167 of those 688 wolves. The reported wolf-sightings were obtained from 1953 field-weeks spent on 18 of 36 Arctic Islands reported on: no wolves were seen on the other 18 islands during an additional 186 field-weeks. Airborne observers made 24% of all wolf-sightings, 266 wolves in 48 packs and 28 single wolves. Respondents reported seeing 572 different wolves in 118 separate packs and 116 single wolves. Pack sizes averaged 4.8 ± 0.28 SE and ranged from 2 to 15 wolves. Sixty-three wolf pups were seen in 16 packs, with a mean of 3.9 ± 2.24 SD and a range of 1–10 pups per pack. Most (81%) of the different wolves were seen on the Queen Elizabeth Islands. Respondents annually averaged 10.9 observations of wolves ·100 field-weeks-1 and saw on average 32.2 wolves·100 field-weeks-1· yr -1 between 1967 and 1991. -

Mr. Ekblaw, who was placed in charge of the 1916 expeditin, will present a separate report. The results of the expedition, naturally, depended upon the loca tion of its headquarters. The enforced selection of Etah, North Green- land, seriously handicapped the work of the expedition from start to finish, while the. expenses of the party were more than doubled. The. first accident, the grounding of the Diana upon the coast of Labrador, was a regrettable adventure. The consequent delay, due to unloading, chartering, and reloading, resulted in such a late arrival at Etah that our plans were disarranged. It curtailed in many ways the eageimess of the men to reach their objective point at the head of Flagler Bay, te proposed site of the winter quarters. The leader and his party being but passengers upon a chartered ship was another handicap, since the captain emphatically declared that he would not steam across Smith Sound. There was but one decision to be made, namely: to land upon the North Greenland shore within striking distance of Cape Sabine. -
Parasite Communities of Tropical Forest Rodents: Influences of Microhabitat Structure and Specialization
PARASITE COMMUNITIES OF TROPICAL FOREST RODENTS: INFLUENCES OF MICROHABITAT STRUCTURE AND SPECIALIZATION By Ashley M. Winker Parasitism is the most common life style and has important implications for the ecology and evolution of hosts. Most organisms host multiple species of parasites, and parasite communities are frequently influenced by the degree of host specialization. Parasite communities are also influenced by their habitat – both the host itself and the habitat that the host occupies. Tropical forest rodents are ideal for examining hypotheses relating parasite community composition to host habitat and host specialization. Proechimys semispinosus and Hoplomys gymnurus are morphologically-similar echimyid rodents; however, P. semispinosus is more generalized, occupying a wider range of habitats. I predicted that P. semispinosus hosts a broader range of parasite species that are less host-specific than does H. gymnurus and that parasite communities of P. semispinosus are related to microhabitat structure, host density, and season. During two dry and wet seasons, individuals of the two rodent species were trapped along streams in central Panama to compare their parasites, and P. semispinosus was sampled on six plots of varying microhabitat structure in contiguous lowland forest to compare parasite loads to microhabitat structure. Such structure was quantified by measuring thirteen microhabitat variables, and dimensions were reduced to a smaller subset using factor analysis to define overall structure. Ectoparasites were collected from each individual, and blood smears were obtained to screen for filarial worms and trypanosomes. In support of my prediction, the habitat generalist ( P. semispinosus ) hosted more individual fleas, mites, and microfilaria; contrary to my prediction, the habitat specialist (H.
