    Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

I am deeply concerned about the house renovation projects, which, to my understanding, are essentially getting rid of private common rooms (replacing with "public" common rooms). In doing so, the university is naively and unrealistically not giving students ways to engage in social behaviors that college students will undeniably do. This also increases the demand and power of final clubs and other organizations that have great social spaces (pudding institute, lampoon, crimson, etc), which will exacerbate many of the negative social pressures that exist on campus (dynamics between final club students and others, gender-related issues - especially sexual assault, etc). The point is, Harvard needs to be mature about and accept the fact that college students engage in various social behaviors and thus do things to help students do these things in a safer and more accessible way. Pretending like they don't exist simply makes the situation worse and students have a much worse experience as a result. 2013-2014 Senior Male 1) I think there is a strong need for more final club/fraternity-type opportunities for undergraduate students. This experience is currently restricted to only a small percentage of the male student body, and could offer tremendous opportunities for growth.

    DIGITAL ART AND FEMINISM: A SURREAL RELATIONSHIP Anne Swartz 10 DIGITAL ART AND FEMINISM: A SURREAL RELATIONSHIP Anne Swartz Many of the images in this exhibition reveal similar interests, themes, and aesthetics to those seen in feminist Art.1 The artists— (PLOLD)RUVWUHXWHU-HQQLIHU+DOO&ODXGLD+DUW<DHO.DQDUHN-HDQHWWH/RXLH5DQX0XNKHUMHH0DU\%DWHV1HXEDXHU0DULH Sivak, Camille Utterback, Adrianne Wortzel, and Janet Zweig—rely on technology as a tool to explore geopolitics, geological phenomenon, obsolete media, data streams and sets, illusion, shifting identities, phantasmagorias, eroticism, bodies, landscapes, geography, and memory. They are not afraid to confront assumptions or propaganda, even challenging conventions and traditions. They show us diverse, alternate domains and generate narratives of augmented worlds. Common to their artworks is the surreal, employed innovatively and underscored by the radical politics of feminism to change society in order to advance it. It is a kind of new romanticism where the real is meshed with fantasy so that the boundaries between the two dissolve. These artists have created pieces that require the viewer’s time; scanning and experiencing the entirety of their respective works over time transports one to their wild and imagined realms. It is easy to lose one’s bearings with these works because they rely upon mysterious disorientation to the viewer’s prosaic and commonplace experiences. It is a situation that is wholly based on the personal, which has been one of the cornerstone themes of feminist art. Digital art has an inherent feminist issues to it. Artist Mary Bates Neubauer termed the “new macho challenge for this generation RIZRPHQ>LV@GLJLWDOWHFKQRORJ\>EHFDXVH@WKH¿HOGLVVWLOOGRPLQDWHGE\PHQ´2 Utilizing technology to make art is, interestingly enough, one of the aspects of the programming world’s fascination with digital art.3 For the artists in this exhibition, digital technologies are ways to express content that is gender related.

The paper is a critical reflection analyzing the major complications, called “tsunamis”, the city of Barcelona has faced in recent years: political instability, terrorism and tourismophobia. The paper aims at 1) retracing the causes and motivations but also community reactions and sociocultural consequences to the three tsunamis, and 2) trying to learn lessons from the Barcelonan case study proposing solutions to the tourismophobia phenomenon. The results stem from an ethnographic fieldwork undertaken during the IPAC Summer School in 2018, whose aim was to understand the paradox of international tourism, at once bringing economic benefits but creating sociocultural disequilibria. The analysis considers written sources and the participant observation during the ethnographic fieldworks in Barcelona.     Women in the Spanish revolution - Solidarity Liz Willis writes on the conditions and role of women in and around the Spanish Civil War and revolution of 1936-1939. Solidarity Pamphlet #48 Introduction In a way, it is clearly artificial to try to isolate the role of women in any series of historical events. There are reasons, however, - why the attempt should still be made from time to time; for one thing it can be assumed that when historians write about "people" or "workers" they mean women to anything like the same extent as men. It is only recently that the history of women has begun to be studied with the attention appropriate to women's significance - constituting as we do approximately half of society at all levels. (1) In their magnum opus The Revolution and the Civil War in Spain (Faber & Faber, 1972), Pierre Brow and Emile Témime state that the participation of women in the Spanish Revolution of 1936 was massive and general, and take this as an index of how deep the revolution went. Unfortunately, details of this aspect are scarce in their book elsewhere, but the sources do allow some kind of picture to be pieced together. In the process of examining how women struggled, what they achieved, and how their consciousness developed in a period of intensified social change, we can expect to touch on most facets of what was going on. Any conclusions that emerge should have relevance for libertarians in general as well as for the present-day women's movement.
