On arrival we are met by our tour manager and transfer by executive coach to the Vienna Museum of Clocks & Geymüllerschlössel. Constructed in 1808 as a summer building for the Viennese merchant and Watches banker Johann Jakob Geymüller, today the palace is one of the few places in Austria offering an authentic original look at the diversity of Biedermeier decorative art. We then continue to the Kunsthistorisches Museum centrally located 4* K+K Maria Theresa Hotel in Vienna for a two night stay. Dinner is included at a restaurant close to our hotel this evening, and the second night is on a bed and breakfast Aschau Clock Museum basis. Graz Clock Tower Day 2 We firstly walk to the Vienna Museum of Clocks and Watches. Founded in 1917, the museum is Schloβ Eggenberg home to one of Europe’s most important collections of clocks and watches. 700 precious timepieces from around the world tell stories of scientific progress, of precision and Schmollgruber Iron Clock craftsmanship, but also of social upheaval and trends in artisanry and design. This afternoon we Museum continue by foot to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In the mid-19th century Franz Joseph commissioned magnificent buildings to be erected along the new circular boulevard, the Steyr – Night Watchman Ringstrasse, amongst which was the Kunsthistorisches Museum, built to house the Imperial City walk Collections. In this huge and sumptuously decorated building are to be found paintings, mainly the Old Masters from the 15th to the 18th centuries, antiquities, including those of early Kremsmünster Abbey civilisations, sculptures and decorative arts, coins and medals, and numerous other artefacts. Golling Castle Museum Day 3 En route to Graz we visit the Aschau Clock Museum. The collection focuses on five hundred Guided city tour of Salzburg years of tower clocks and roasting spits, from 15th century Gothic to the Renaissance, and from the Baroque era to the early industrial revolution in the 19th century. The oldest tower clock Jeremias Sauters Glockenspiel dates from around 1470, and today the collection comprises 64 tower clocks and 18 roasting spits. The forged iron or wooden cog mechanism show how clock technology, craftsmanship, Hellbrunn Palace shape and design developed, as well as their regional peculiarities. The history of clocks and the art of clock making is brought to life for visitors by the exhibits in the clock room, which are complemented by descriptions and posters. On arrival in Graz we check in at the 4* Das Weitzer Hotel for a two night stay. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening, and the remaining night is on a bed and breakfast basis. Day 4 This morning we see the Clock Tower, the traditional landmark of Graz. The clock in the 28 meter tower has struck the hour precisely since 1712. This afternoon we visit the UNESCO listed Schloβ Eggenberg. Styria’s grandest palace to the West of Graz is home to an impressive cycle of over 500 ceiling paintings. The palace owes its name to its famous owner, Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, who rose from being the son of a provincial patrician, to becoming one of the Vienna Museum of most powerful statesmen of his times at the beginning of the 17th century. Clocks and Watches Day 5 On arrival in Steyr, and after some time at leisure for lunch, we visit the Schmollgruber Iron Clock Museum. Steyr was the hub of Austria’s iron industry for centuries, and during the early 17th century skillful and elaborate iron clocks were produced in the city. Situated in a house where clocks were produced, some of the exhibits in the museum date back to the 14th century. We then check in at the 4* Christkindlwirt Hotel in Steyr for an overnight stay. The hotel adjoins the famous Christkindl Church. After an included dinner in our hotel, we enjoy a Night Watchman City walk. A night watchman in traditional clothing, and carrying a lantern and halberd takes us on a memorable tour through the medieval city centre. During our tour, a climb up the parish church spire awards us with fantastic views of Steyr. Day 6 This morning we visit Kremsmünster Abbey, founded in the year 777 by Tassilo III, Duke of Kunsthistoriches Museum Bavaria, and according to legend on the site where his son Gunther was found dead following a hunting accident. It is one of the largest, most significant and oldest abbeys in Austria, and with the exception of St. Peter’s Abbey and Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, there is no other older abbey still in existence. We will be visiting the Observatory at Kremsmünster Abbey in the Mathematical Tower. This afternoon we visit the Golling Castle Museum. The castle was erected by the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg in the 13th century, and is perched on a rock overlooking the Salzach Valley. On the second floor of the museum we discover Austria’s second largest clock and watch exhibition. Richly decorated pocket watches, alarm clocks, grandfather clocks and even a church tower clock are all waiting to be discovered. On arrival in Salzburg we check in at the 4* Hotel Imlauer & Bräu for a two night stay. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening, and the final night of our tour is on a bed and breakfast basis. Day 7 Schloβ Eggenberg This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the old city of Salzburg, the home of Mozart and the ‘Sound of Music’, taking in sights such as the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Cathedral, Mozart’s birthplace and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. During our guided tour we see the Jeremias Sauters Glockenspiel. The 35 bells were cast in Antwerp between 1688 and 1689, and the carillon has operated in Salzburg since 1704. This afternoon we visit Hellbrunn Palace, commissioned by Salzburg’s Prince Archbishop Matkus Sittikus von Hohenems in 1612 and designed by the famous cathedral architect Santino Solari, and one of the most magnificent Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. Day 8 We travel by coach to Munich Airport for our direct scheduled British Airways or Lufthansa flight back to Heathrow. NB:- Please note we reserve the right to alter the above itinerary if required for operational reasons. Given the historic nature of the places visited, a certain degree of walking will be involved, and this holiday may not be suitable for those with mobility problems. STUDY Requested by the TRAN committee Research for TRAN Committee - Overtourism: impact and possible policy responses Policy Department for Structural and Cohesion Policies Directorate-General for Internal Policies EN PE 629.184 - October 2018 Research for TRAN Committee - Overtourism: impact and possible policy responses Abstract This study addresses the complex phenomenon of overtourism in the EU. By focusing on a set of case studies, the study reports on overtourism indicators, discusses management approaches implemented within different destinations and assesses policy responses. It concludes that a common set of indicators cannot be defined because of the complex causes and effects of overtourism. Avoiding overtourism requires custom-made policies in cooperation between destinations' stakeholders and policymakers. Hohenwerfen Fortress towers majestically atop a lofty rock peak, far above Salzachtal valley. Trained birds of prey circle the towers, while those who pass through these mighty walls enter another world. Experience the medieval era with all your senses! No wonder Hohenwerfen For- tress is one of the most popular destinations for families in the entire province of Salzburg. There’s yet another highlight to look forward to in 2020, as the armoury hosts a fascinating new exhibition about the famous and infamous Jackl – and the age in which he lived. The Legend of Jackl: Witches and Wizards in Salzburg In the summer of 2020, Fortress Hohenwerfen is to open its doors on a large exhibition entitled ‘The Legend of Jackl – Wizards and Witches in Salzburg’. It’s dedicated to a craftsman and bandit leader from Werfen – Jakob Tischler (a.k.a. Jakob Koller), better known as ‘Jackl the Wizard’. Visitors explore ‘Imagination, Fear and Protection – cults of fire and witchcraft today’ on a total of four floors of the an- cient armoury building. The display deals with the occurrences at the centre of the Salzburg witch trials, through to today’s cults of magic around the world. The exhibition will fascinate visitors with some au- thentic and very spooky exhibits, multimedia installations and fairy-tale characters.
