We then continue to the Kunsthistorisches Museum centrally located 4* K+K Maria Theresa Hotel in Vienna for a two night stay. Dinner is included at a restaurant close to our hotel this evening, and the second night is on a bed and breakfast Aschau Clock Museum basis. Graz Clock Tower Day 2 We firstly walk to the Vienna Museum of Clocks and Watches. Founded in 1917, the museum is Schloβ Eggenberg home to one of Europe’s most important collections of clocks and watches. 700 precious timepieces from around the world tell stories of scientific progress, of precision and Schmollgruber Iron Clock craftsmanship, but also of social upheaval and trends in artisanry and design. This afternoon we Museum continue by foot to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In the mid-19th century Franz Joseph commissioned magnificent buildings to be erected along the new circular boulevard, the Steyr – Night Watchman Ringstrasse, amongst which was the Kunsthistorisches Museum, built to house the Imperial City walk Collections. In this huge and sumptuously decorated building are to be found paintings, mainly the Old Masters from the 15th to the 18th centuries, antiquities, including those of early Kremsmünster Abbey civilisations, sculptures and decorative arts, coins and medals, and numerous other artefacts. Golling Castle Museum Day 3 En route to Graz we visit the Aschau Clock Museum. The collection focuses on five hundred Guided city tour of Salzburg years of tower clocks and roasting spits, from 15th century Gothic to the Renaissance, and from the Baroque era to the early industrial revolution in the 19th century. The oldest tower clock Jeremias Sauters Glockenspiel dates from around 1470, and today the collection comprises 64 tower clocks and 18 roasting spits. The forged iron or wooden cog mechanism show how clock technology, craftsmanship, Hellbrunn Palace shape and design developed, as well as their regional peculiarities. The history of clocks and the art of clock making is brought to life for visitors by the exhibits in the clock room, which are complemented by descriptions and posters. On arrival in Graz we check in at the 4* Das Weitzer Hotel for a two night stay. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening, and the remaining night is on a bed and breakfast basis. Day 4 This morning we see the Clock Tower, the traditional landmark of Graz. The clock in the 28 meter tower has struck the hour precisely since 1712. This afternoon we visit the UNESCO listed Schloβ Eggenberg. Styria’s grandest palace to the West of Graz is home to an impressive cycle of over 500 ceiling paintings. The palace owes its name to its famous owner, Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, who rose from being the son of a provincial patrician, to becoming one of the Vienna Museum of most powerful statesmen of his times at the beginning of the 17th century. Clocks and Watches Day 5 On arrival in Steyr, and after some time at leisure for lunch, we visit the Schmollgruber Iron Clock Museum. Steyr was the hub of Austria’s iron industry for centuries, and during the early 17th century skillful and elaborate iron clocks were produced in the city. Situated in a house where clocks were produced, some of the exhibits in the museum date back to the 14th century. We then check in at the 4* Christkindlwirt Hotel in Steyr for an overnight stay. The hotel adjoins the famous Christkindl Church. After an included dinner in our hotel, we enjoy a Night Watchman City walk. A night watchman in traditional clothing, and carrying a lantern and halberd takes us on a memorable tour through the medieval city centre. During our tour, a climb up the parish church spire awards us with fantastic views of Steyr. Day 6 This morning we visit Kremsmünster Abbey, founded in the year 777 by Tassilo III, Duke of Kunsthistoriches Museum Bavaria, and according to legend on the site where his son Gunther was found dead following a hunting accident. It is one of the largest, most significant and oldest abbeys in Austria, and with the exception of St. Peter’s Abbey and Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, there is no other older abbey still in existence. We will be visiting the Observatory at Kremsmünster Abbey in the Mathematical Tower. This afternoon we visit the Golling Castle Museum. The castle was erected by the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg in the 13th century, and is perched on a rock overlooking the Salzach Valley. On the second floor of the museum we discover Austria’s second largest clock and watch exhibition. Richly decorated pocket watches, alarm clocks, grandfather clocks and even a church tower clock are all waiting to be discovered. During our guided tour we see the Jeremias Sauters Glockenspiel. The 35 bells were cast in Antwerp between 1688 and 1689, and the carillon has operated in Salzburg since 1704. This afternoon we visit Hellbrunn Palace, commissioned by Salzburg’s Prince Archbishop Matkus Sittikus von Hohenems in 1612 and designed by the famous cathedral architect Santino Solari, and one of the most magnificent Renaissance buildings north of the Alps.
