AWS’s perspective is reflected in the agency’s broad strategy, which integrates culturally knowledgeable and language-accessible shelter services, educational programs, and community-based initiatives and advocacy. AWS is a survivor-centered organization, supporting women and children who have survived and witnessed violence, including domestic violence and trafficking. Individuals served include women in same-sex relationships and heterosexual relationships. AWS welcomes all survivors: in particular, the agency has the unique cultural and language capacity to meet the needs of Asian immigrant and refugee survivors of violence, with a staff who speak a total of more than 30 different languages. Direct services are provided almost exclusively by volunteer lay health care workers. Treatments, referrals and guidance are provided in a client-centered context, and are appropriate to their lifestyle, culture, language and financial situation. To make a general medical appointment, call Monday through Friday evenings at exactly 5:45pm to make a same-evening medical appointment, or at 5:30pm if you are homeless. Please note that the only Medical Service offered on Tuesday evening is Tuberculosis (TB) Testing. General medical services will be provided on all other weeknights (including TB testing). Some of the treatments provided include: colds, coughs, ear infections, sexually transmitted diseases, skin problems, urinary tract infections, minor wounds, burns, feet soaking, TB tests, and pregnancy tests. The CoE serves as a vital bridge between research and service and provides a statewide avenue through which cutting edge community-based transgender HIV prevention science is disseminated to local communities via marketing, materials development, publications, an interactive website and educational activities.

Within the CATS network are designated programs to serve women, men and the elderly aged 55 and over, answering the need to feel safe and understood in the process of recovery and transformation. A Woman’s Place is a 24-hour shelter and transitional housing facility in San Francisco for women with special needs due to mental disabilities, substance abuse and HIV-related issues, and welcomes transgender women.
