Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 15, No. 1 (2019) Making Room for The Brady Bunch: The Syndication of Suburban Discomfort Janna Jones Introduction The Brady Bunch, created by Sherwood Schwartz, is an American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) sitcom that aired on Friday nights from 1969 to 1974. The show was not a hit with audiences or critics in its prime time run; it became a popular culture icon only after it went into syndication in 1976. The Brady Bunch found its audience once it began airing on weekdays, during after school hours. It has now has been in continuous syndication in the United States and around the globe for the last four decades. Because of the show's popularity dur- ing its lengthy syndication, two generations of audiences share a common after- school legacy of watching The Brady Bunch. In spite of the show’s saccharine storylines and bland representations of early 1970s white, middle class suburbia, the Brady family and their suburban home are deeply rooted in twentieth centu- ry popular memory. The Brady Bunch was dismissed during its prime time run because it was oblivious to the profound social and cultural conflicts of the early 1970s. Four months after the show premiered in 1969, Richard Nixon became president; he resigned from office five months after The Brady Bunch was cancelled. The five years of the Nixon administration was a period of social and political upheavals Janna Jones is a professor of Creative Media and Film. in the School of Communica- tion, at Northern Arizona University. • 'Marcia Brady' Opens up About Bulimia Battle Maureen Mccormick Joined Reality Show to Get Healthy ABC News
'Marcia Brady' Opens Up About Bulimia Battle Maureen McCormick Joined Reality Show to Get Healthy ABC News NEW YORK (April 6) - For six years starting in 1969, Maureen McCormick was America's favorite big sister on the country's favorite family TV show. With her long blond hair and miniskirts, Marcia Brady was the oldest, prettiest and most popular Brady sister. But for years after "The Brady Bunch," McCormick lived with some dark secrets: a decade-long battle with bulimia and, as she revealed to People magazine, a cocaine addiction that lasted six years. McCormick says she has beaten back those demons and will appear on the latest season of VH-1's reality show "Celebrity Fit Club" to try to lose weight the healthy way. McCormick, looking fit and younger than her 50 years, said today on "Good Morning America" that she became bulimic after the show ended in 1974. She was tutored on the set while the show ran, but then went back to high school, where she succumbed to pressure from other girls to try bingeing and purging. "When I went back to public school, I was with some girlfriends and they said, 'Hey, you know what you can do? You can eat a lot of food and get rid of it.' That's how [I] got into it," she said. From Humiliation to Happiness on Reality Show McCormick never told anyone about her eating disorder until recently, when she was asked about it on "Entertainment Tonight." "It's so weird. I've always wanted to [tell someone]," she said, "but I've never been asked the question, 'Have you ever had an eating disorder?' And they did ask me and I couldn't lie." Now McCormick is glad that she revealed her struggle with bulimia, because she has a 17-year-old daughter and hopes she can help other girls who struggle with body image.

  • List of the Brady Bunch Episodes 1 List of the Brady Bunch Episodes
List of The Brady Bunch episodes 1 List of The Brady Bunch episodes The Brady Bunch is a situation comedy created by Sherwood Schwartz, who also created Gilligan's Island.[1] The Brady Bunch follows Mike Brady (Robert Reed), a widowed architect with sons Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher Knight) and Bobby (Mike Lookinland). Mike marries Carol Martin (née Tyler) (Florence Henderson), whose daughters from her previous marriage are Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb) and Cindy (Susan Olsen). The wife and daughters take the Brady surname, and they all move in together into Mike's home in suburban Los Angeles, California.[1] The cast is rounded out by Mike's live-in housekeeper Alice (Ann B. The Brady Bunch opening grid, season one Davis), and the boys' dog Tiger. The series was produced by Paramount Television in association with Redwood Productions, and premiered on ABC on September 28, 1969. The series ran for five seasons, with all 117 episodes originally airing on Fridays. The series ran in the 8 p.m. time slot, with the exception of season 2, which aired at 7:30 p.m.[1] [2] The show also featured a number of sports and TV stars of that era, such as Davy Jones, Desi Arnaz Jr, Vincent Price, Joe Namath and Deacon Jones. Throughout its original run The Brady Bunch received mostly negative reviews and never broke the Nielsen ratings top ten.[2] Even with negative reviews, The Brady Bunch managed to maintain within the Nielsen top thirty. Ratings, however, began to dip, and in order to boost the ratings of its much-needed younger audience, Schwartz introduced a new character: the Bradys' cousin Oliver (Robbie Rist) late in the fifth season.
