(Robert Browning, The Ring and the Book [1868–69])1 These lines from Robert Browning’s ambitious, blank-verse epic, The Ring and the Book, describe the town talkers of late seventeenth-century Rome as they witness the proceedings of a triple-murder trial. Speaking in pro- pria persona, Browning seems disdainful of the relativistic abandon of “prattle” that “proved wolves sheep and sheep wolves.” Yet the explicit premise of The Ring and the Book is to reanimate talkers—from the dead material of print—who fail, more often than not, to provide clear moral judgments. -

Metamorphosis: From Light Verse to the Poetry of Witness by Maxine Kumin from The Georgia Review, Winter 2012 How did I become a very old poet, and a polemicist at that? In the Writers Chronicle of December 2010 I described myself as largely self-educated. In an era before creative writing classes became a staple of the college curriculum, I was "piecemeal poetry literate"—in love with Gerard Manley Hopkins and A. E. Housman, an omnivorous reader across the centuries of John Donne and George Herbert, Randall Jarrell and T. S. Eliot. I wrote at least a hundred lugubrious romantic poems. One, I remember, began When lonely on an August night I lie Wide-eyed beneath the mysteries of space And watch unnumbered pricks of dew-starred sky Drop past the earth with quiet grace ... Deep down I longed to be one of the tribe but I had no sense of how to go about gaining entry. I had already achieved fame in the narrow confines of my family for little ditties celebrating birthdays and other occasions, but I did not find this satisfying. There were no MFAs in poetry that I knew of except for the famous Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936; certainly there was nothing accessible to a mother of two, pregnant with her third child in 1953 in Newton, Massachusetts. I have noted elsewhere that I chafed against the domesticity in which I found myself. I had a good marriage and our two little girls were joyous elements in it. But my discontent was palpable; I did not yet know that a quiet revolution in thinking was taking place. -

At the Intersection of Poetry and a High School English Class: 9th Graders‟ Participation in Poetry Reading Writing Workshop and the Relation to Social and Academic Identities‟ Development DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Koukis Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Anna Soter, Advisor George Newell Mollie Blackburn Terry Hermsen Copyright by Susan Koukis 2010 Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine whether “marginalized” (Moje, Young, Readence, & Moore 2000) 9th grade students in a low-level, tracked English class perceived themselves as more successful students in English class after participating in a 10-week Poetry Reading Writing Workshop. A second purpose was to determine whether their knowledge of poetry terms and concepts such as metaphor, and subsequent performance on the poetry sections of standardized tests improved. My nested case study focused on 19 students in a low-level 9th grade English class. As the practitioner researcher, I conducted in- depth research with six focus students chosen through purposeful sampling. I collected data over the course of three months, using the types of instruments most common to case study research. Data analysis for my nested case study was ongoing and recursive between field work and reflection. Data were coded for patterns that represented categories pertaining to my research questions and coding was refined as I gathered and re-read additional data sources. The findings revealed that students learn better, and are more engaged when they have choices (Atwell, 1998; Lauscher, 2007). -

Katowice : Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego Agnieszka Adamowicz-Pośpiech The Disclosure of Self in Robert Browning’s Dramatic Monologues “To read poems,” wrote George Eliot in a review of Browning’s work, “is often a substitute for thought; fine-sounding conventional phrases and the sing-song of verse demand no co-operation in the reader; they glide over the mind.”1 Contrary to Eliot’s assessment, the aim of this paper is to show that by creating a disturbing persona characterized by a fluctuating self-consciousness which was distinctive not only of the fictional character but also of the listener/reader and the writer, Browning hampers uninvolved reading. In his dramatic monologues, the poet employs certain techniques to hide the real nature of his monologists, and the reader is forced painstakingly to gather the dispersed allusions, implications and insinuations so as to uncover the secrets of the speakers. Doubleness in Victorian poetry has been perceived by some critics as one of its defining characteristics.2 Amongst the terms coined to describe it is E.D.H. Johnson’s “dark companion”: “The expressed content [of a poem] has a dark companion, its imaginative counterpart, which accompanies and comments on apparent meaning in such a way as to suggest ulterior motives.”3 Isobel Armstrong proposed a parallel concept “double companion.”4 However, the essential words, seem to me, to be the “imaginative counterpart” – since it is only in the imagination of the reader that the counterpart may arise on condition that the reader becomes involved in unraveling the text. -

Tea Time: Robert Browning Post by Wende Robert Browning was born in a suburb of London, England on May 7, 1812. His mother was an accomplished pianist and a devout Christian. His father, who worked as a bank clerk, was an artist, scholar, and collector of books and pictures. Through most of his childhood, Robert was homeschooled, being proficient at reading and writing by the age of five, and learning Latin, Greek, and French by the time he was fourteen. In 1828, he enrolled at the University of London, but he soon left, desiring to read and learn at his own pace. Robert Browning enjoyed the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett, and after corresponding with her for a time, married her in 1846. The couple moved to Italy, where they both continued to write. They had a son, Robert "Pen" Browning, in 1849. After Elizabeth’s death in 1861, Robert and Pen moved to London. In his long life Robert Browning wrote many volumes of poems. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is always a favorite with children, as are How they brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix, and Ratisbon. His most popular poems are Pippa Passes, The Ring and the Book, A Blot on the 'Scutcheon, and Saul. Robert Browning died on the same day that his final volume of verse, Asolando, was published, in 1889. The following poem “Spring Song”, excerpted from Pippa Passes, is great for younger children to memorize and recite due to its simple rhyme scheme and vocabulary. The London Browning Society has been addressed by scholars in modern biographies such as The Life of Robert Browning: A Critical Biography (1996) by Clyde De L. Ryals, and it was studied in a 1969 book by William S. Peterson titled Interrogating The Oracle: A History of the London Browning Society. However, this thesis goes further by approaching the Society as the equivalent of a modern day “fan” community, and by providing a close look at some of the Society’s published documents. The purpose of doing so is to form a picture of Browning’s reputation during his life and career based on the perceptions of the critics of the day, the Society members, and the thoughts he had on himself and his own works. -
