THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI RESEARCH CENTER-KANSAS CITY K0003 Kansas City Browning Society Records 1927-1988 74 folders, oversize panoramic photo Correspondence, bylaws, minutes, ledgers, yearbooks, programs and other materials relating to the Brownings and poetry. HISTORY: The Kansas City Browning Society was founded in 1927 by Mrs. Ola Jones Nisbet with the purpose of studying the poetry and lives of Robert Barrett Browning (1812-1889) and his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861). At the organization’s height, membership numbered more than two hundred persons. Members met in small study circles and the society held monthly assembly meetings with guest speakers, often from Kansas City area academia, presenting lectures on various aspects of the Brownings’ poetry. However, aging membership and the steady decline in popularity of women’s clubs contributed to the disbanding of the society in 1988. PROVENANCE: Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde, Director of Libraries, University of Missouri-Kansas City, acquired these documents from Mrs. Frank Thomas of the Kansas City Browning Society. The records were, in turn, were received as accession 6kc on May 15, 1980. An addition was made as KA0538 on November 16, 1989. VICTORIAN INTERROGATIONS: ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING'S SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE AND AURORA LEIGH P AULINE MARGARET SIMONSEN 1993 • ABSTRACT Elizabeth Barrett Browning's two major works, Sonnets from the Portuguese and Aurora Leigh, provide a commentary on the structure of Victorian society, particularly in relation to gender roles. This thesis argues that in both works there is a primary concern with the ways in which women are placed within binary structures which are established by patriarchal discourses. These two works examine different structures in androcentric culture: heterosexual (courtly) love in the Sonnets, and patriarchy (the Law of the Father) in Aurora Leiqh. Part One focusses on Sonnets from the Portuguese, with the first chapter describing the speaker's tension in responding to conventional love roles: will she submit or rebel? The chapter also notes the speaker's appropriation of the courtly love tradition as a metaphor for the marginalised position in Victorian society of the woman poet. Chapter Two discusses particular rol�s assumed by the players in this love relationship, particularly the male/ female roles of god and sinner, and the final chapter makes apparent the speaker's growing concern with metaphors as a means of re-presenting her experience. Part Two moves from the personal context (of the Sonnets) to the social with a focus on Aurora Leiqh and the laws of society as established by patriarchal systems. -

Jones, 1999 Repository: Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin Browning family Biographical Sketches Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806-1861 The eldest of twelve children, Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett was born in 1806 to Edward Moulton-Barrett and his wife in Durham, England. The family's considerable wealth came largely from a Jamaican sugar plantation and in 1809 the family acquired a 500-acre estate near the Malvern Hills. Elizabeth received an excellent education at home, studying Greek and Latin as well as modern languages, read widely, and participated in family theatrical productions. Though she lead a generally healthy childhood, the family doctor began prescribing opium for a nervous complaint around 1821; the death of her mother in 1828 seemed to aggravate that condition. Forced to sell the estate due to severe financial losses in the early 1830s, Barrett's father resettled his family in London and in 1838 Elizabeth's first volume of poetry, The Seraphim and Other Poems appeared, published under her real name. -

Early years Robert Browning was born in Camberwell - a district now forming part of the borough of Southwark in South London, England - the only son of Sarah Anna (née Wiedemann) and Robert Browning.[1][2] His father was a well-paid clerk for the Bank of England, earning about £150 per year.[3] Browning’s paternal grandfather was a wealthy slave owner in Saint Kitts, West Indies, but Browning's father was an abolitionist. Browning's father had been sent to the West Indies to work on a sugar plantation, but revolted by the slavery there, he returned to England. Browning’s mother was a daughter of a German shipowner who had settled in Dundee, and his Scottish wife. Browning had one sister, Sarianna. Browning's paternal grandmother, Margaret Tittle, who had inherited a plantation in St Kitts, was rumoured within the family to have had some Jamaican mixed race ancestry. Author Julia Markus suggests St Kitts rather than Jamaica.[4][5] There is little evidence to support this rumour, and it seems to be merely an anecdotal family story.[6] Robert's father, a literary collector, amassed a library of around 6,000 books, many of them rare. -
