Degree awarded September 2017 ii © 2017 Rupa Narayana Pillai This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (United States) License. iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Rupa Narayana Pillai Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology September 2017 Title: Caribbean Hinduism on the Move This dissertation is an ethnographic study of how members of the Indo-Guyanese community traveled from Guyana to New York City, carrying with them distinct understandings of Hinduism informed by their multiple dislocations and how they utilize religion as ideology and practice to help cultivate their identities as Indo-Guyanese Americans. I argue religion as a mobile concept, what I have termed as ‘religion on the move,’ gives a theoretical frame to understand how devotees adapt religion to help them navigate their identities in unknown territories. By studying more than devout individuals in places of worship, I have followed Caribbean Hinduism and Indo-Guyanese Hindus in New York City to various sites to appreciate how religion informs their experiences, operates on different scales (spatially, politically, and temporally), and negotiates power structures. The festival of ‘Holi’ is proving to be an environmental risk due to the toxic colors used during the celebrations. Unlimited use of such toxic colors affects the human health an ecological balance. Present study analysis the trend and status of pollutants generated during festivals. As per data obtained from M.P. pollution control board Gwalior, it is observed that noise level is high than CPCB standards at three locations of Gwalior city. SPM level is also high during Deepawali festival. Study shows that characteristics of water are also affected. Celebrate dry Holi. Don’t use water. Use natural and home- made holi colors. Stone idols are worshipped. Idols made of stone are best as they can be worshipped every year. Immerse only those idols which are made of unbaked mud, clay or other biodegradable material. Use less number of firecrackers. The manufacture, sale or use of fire-crackers generating noise level exceeding 125 dB(AI) or 145 dB(C)pk at 4 meters distance from the point of bursting shall be prohibited.     Our Immigrant Fathers: Reflecting on Caregiving Laurens Van Sluytman and Halaevalu Vakalahi Abstract: This article explores the experiences of two immigrant fathers. One is from Guyana, geographically in South America, but culturally in the Caribbean. One is from the Pacific, of Tongan ancestry but living in Hawai’i. Each father is an older adult with a chronic condition, who has been primarily cared for by their spouses. The story is told from the perspective of their two social work educator children, one male and one female, who provided support from a distance. Explored in this reflection are the complexities in the intersection of traditional cultural expectations, immigrant experience and cultural duality, and sustaining forces for the spousal caregivers and children who are social work professionals. Practice would benefit from tools that initiate narratives providing deeper awareness of environment and embeddedness within communities, both communities of origin and new communities and the implications for caregiving. Treatment planning must be inclusive of caregiving (shared with all parties) for older adults while striving to keep the family informed and respecting the resilience and lives deeply rooted in a higher. Keywords: caregiving, immigration, cultural duality, community-based writing, autoethnography, cultural context Many scholars of diverse communities tie their scholarship to their communities of origin and those communities’ relationship to larger social structures. At times, these scholars find their research interests deeply intertwined in their personal biographies. In these cases, community-based writing offers an opportunity to add deeper rich context to the lives of communities being studied or with whom professionals seek to intervene.

Having bowed down unto Narayana and Nara, the most exalted of male beings, and the goddess Saraswati, must the word Jaya be uttered. Janamejaya said, “After Karna had thus been slain in battle by Savyasachin, what did the small (unslaughtered) remnant of the Kauravas do, O regenerate one? Beholding the army of the Pandavas swelling with might and energy, what behaviour did the Kuru prince Suyodhana adopt towards the Pandavas, thinking it suitable to the hour? I desire to hear all this. Tell me, O foremost of regenerate ones, I am never satiated with listening to the grand feats of my ancestors.” Vaisampayana said, “After the fall of Karna, O king, Dhritarashtra’s son Suyodhana was plunged deep into an ocean of grief and saw despair on every side. Indulging in incessant lamentations, saying, ‘Alas, oh Karna! Alas, oh Karna!’ he proceeded with great difficulty to his camp, accompanied by the unslaughtered remnant of the kings on his side. Thinking of the slaughter of the Suta’s son, he could not obtain peace of mind, though comforted by those kings with excellent reasons inculcated by the scriptures. Regarding destiny and necessity to be all- powerful, the Kuru king firmly resolved on battle. Having duly made Salya the generalissimo of his forces, that bull among kings, O monarch, proceeded for battle, accompanied by that unslaughtered remnant of his forces. Then, O chief of Bharata’s race, a terrible battle took place between the troops of the Kurus and those of the Pandavas, resembling that between the gods and the Asuras.

Its use in clinical practice is also elusive. A few research works have been carried in Pharmaceutical aspect but its therapeutic utility needs to be proved. Triphala Masi: Coarse powder of the drugs namely Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), Amalaki Masi Kalpana is a dosage form in Ayurveda Pharmaceutics where (Phyllanthus emblica) are taken and heated in an iron pan till it the drug is brought to a carbonized form by the process of turns black. It is used in Upadamsha vrana (soft chancre) with employing heat to the dry ingredients of drug. The drugs selected for madhu (Honey) for application. Masi preparation can be plant or animal origin.
