Western and Indian theories of consciousness confronted A comparative overview of continental and analytic philosophy with Advaita Vedanta and Madhyamaka Buddhism Michele Cossellu Termin: HT13 Kurs: RKT140 Degree Project, Bachelor of Arts, Religious Studies, 15hec Nivå: Kandidat Handledare: Katarina Planck Western and Indian theories of consciousness confronted A comparative overview of continental and analytic philosophy with Advaita Vedanta and Madhyamaka Buddhism Abstract The burgeoning field of cognitive studies in the West is motivated by a renewed interest in conscious experience, which arose in the postmodern zeitgeist in response to the positivist, scientific ideal of objectivity. This work presents a historical overview of Western philosophy from its dawn, focusing on the evolution of key concepts in metaphysics, ontology and epistemology, to arrive at the examination of modern theories on consciousness. The monist systems of pre-Socratic philosophers, the empiricism and rationalism of the Humanism, Kant’s critique and the post-Kantian split of traditions in the analytic and continental branches are surveyed. A summary of the key historical concepts of consciousness in the continental tradition, and especially in German idealism and phenomenology is presented. Modern physicalist theories of mind based on epistemological realism, in the analytic tradition are sketched, and critical aspects of the realist viewpoint discussed. The reintroduction of the phenomenal perspective in philosophy of mind, is argued, represents an important turning point in analytic philosophy. In the second part, the philosophic-religious traditions of Advaita Vedanta and Mahayana Buddhism, in its Madhyamaka branch, are presented, and their respective notions of self, mind and reality confronted. The concept of consciousness as an ontological substance is, in Buddhism, deconstructed through the analysis of impermanence and interdependent origination of phenomena. -

Dhalayat** ABSTRAK Perempuan memiliki tempat yang penting dalam sejarah dan peranan perempuan telah mengalami berbagai perubahan. Dalam beberapa dekade yang lalu, perempuan dianggap sebagai bagian dari kekayaan; perempuan diperjualbelikan seperti barang. Kemudian, perempuan diperlakukan pada kedudukan yang berbeda; “merampas” hak-hak mereka, namun “mengingatkan” pada kewajiban-kewajiban mereka sebagai perempuan. Seiring bertambahnya waktu, peran perempuan di India berubah dari penghasil keturunan menjadi pencari nafkah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menerangkan status perempuan India dari masa lalu ke masa sekarang. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menjelaskan posisi perempuan berdasarkan pemberdayaan secara sosial- ekonomi-politik. Sejarah India menunjukkan bukti standar ganda status perempuan. Dalam sastra dan agama di India, perempuan ditempatkan pada posisi yang tinggi. Namun, dalam skenario domestik, politik, dan ekonomi, perempuan mengemban status rendah dan menjadi subjek diskriminasi dan eksploitasi. Peran perempuan India telah berubah dari kukungan nilai-nilai tradisional menuju era baru kebebasan dan sering kali disebut “fenomenal”. Nasib perempuan India dari masa lalu hingga masa sekarang penting untuk diikuti. Perempuan India yang pernah dianggap sebagai ahli dalam seni rumah tangga kini menjadi “kekuatan yang membentuk negara” yang luasnya sebanding dengan sebuah benua. Kata Kunci: mayoritas yang diam, pembuka jalan bagi pembangunan, peran perempuan dalam sejarah India, perjuangan untuk otonomi, stereotipe ABSTRACT No matter how the world changes, no matter what country and social system people are in, no one can deny women’s importance in history. -

Forum CASTE: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion Vol. 1, No. 2, pp. 187–192 brandeis.edu/j-caste October 2020 ISSN 2639-4928 DOI: 10.26812/caste.v1i2.183 A Touchable Woman’s Untouchable Daughter: Interplay of Caste and Gender in Nepal Sarita Pariyar1 Abstract Drawing on more than a decade of multidisciplinary engagement with politics of dignity and social justice, this essay critically interrogates the influence of Hindu jurisprudence and its connections to the current Nepali constitution on the lower or ‘impure’ castes, especially women. The author argues that, notwithstanding the abolition of the caste system more than 50 years ago, the new constitution, which defines secularism as Sanatan Dharma–essentially preserving old Hindu traditions and practices under the law–continues to perpetuate discrimination against Dalits and other marginalized groups. She cites her own experience as an ‘untouchable’ child of a mixed-caste marriage and the tragic experience of an inter-caste alliance that led to the death of the ‘lower caste’ groom to examine our understanding of and prospects for love, violence, social inclusion/exclusion, family, citizenship, and society in Nepal. The essay succinctly focuses on the intersectionality of caste, class, gender, and religion that continues to shape everyday life and future of the ordinary people in the predominantly Hindu country. My mother was a Kshatriya, a ‘high-caste touchable’ woman. My father was from the Damai tailor caste, an ‘untouchable’. Because my mother married my father, she lost her caste status; she was labeled ‘impure’ for the rest of her life. -

CONCEPT OF PRAJNA AND UPAYA • Bhajagovinda Ghosh f we just enter into a Mahayana Monastery in any Himalayan region, we may notice that monks, besides other ritualistic objects I keep Vajra (Tib.Dorje) and Ghanta (Thilbu) on chokje (small longish table). During the ritual performance a Dorje is held in the right hand and a bell in the left hand with a particular gesture. These gestures symbolically reproduce the conjugal play of wisdom and method as female and the male principles respectively and are represented by the two ritual objects viz; Ghanta and Vajra. While the Ghanta (Tib. Thilbu) stands for wisdom, the Vajra (Tib. Dorje) represents the method. In the Tibetan Hagiographical literature we come accross a name of Ter-ston (Revealer of hidden Treasures) Dorje Lingpa. He is said to have visited Denzong several times in the remote historical time. The name of Darjeeling is most probably derived after the name of mystic saint, which means "The Place of Thunderbolt". The two objects as mentioned above also figure in sacred art, pictorial or sculptural. In the artistic representation they are seen either separately as also grasped in the hands of various gods and goddesses. The supreme manifestation of Buddha Vajrapani or Vaj radhara is Chanadorje and Dorjechang respectively in Tibetan . According to the traditional symbolism wisdom the bell as female principJe should be brought in divine play being harmonious Iy blended with that of the male (Dorje) if ever the spirituality is to bear its proper fruit of Enlightenment. Usually this idea is expressed in the following analogy that wisdom is the eye and method the leg and that if one of these fails the man will be helpless. -

religions Article Mobilizing Shakti: Hindu Goddesses and Campaigns Against Gender-Based Violence Ali Smears School of Religious Studies, McGill University, Montreal, QC H2T 2T9, Canada; [email protected] Received: 3 December 2018; Accepted: 2 May 2019; Published: 13 June 2019 Abstract: Hindu goddesses have been mobilized as powerful symbols by various groups of activists in both visual and verbal campaigns in India. Although these mobilizations have different motivations and goals, they have frequently emphasized the theological association between goddesses and women, connected through their common possession of Shakti (power). These campaigns commonly highlight the idea that both goddesses and Hindu women share in this power in order to inspire women to action in particular ways. While this association has largely been used as a campaign strategy by Hindu right-wing women’s organizations in India, it has also become a strategy employed in particular feminist campaigns as well. This article offers a discourse analysis of two online activist campaigns (Priya's Shakti and Abused Goddesses) which mobilize Hindu goddesses (and their power) in order to raise awareness about gender-based violence in India. I examine whether marginalized identities of women in India, in relation to caste, class and religious identity, are represented in the texts and images. To do so, I analyze how politically-charged, normative imaginings of Indian women are constructed (or maintained). This analysis raises questions about the usefulness of employing Hindu goddesses as feminist symbols, particularly in contemporary Indian society, in which communal and caste-based tensions are elevated.
