Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

The Ideology All rights reserved. © Conclusion INTRODUCTION1 Understanding the movement and the ideology la- belled Calvinism is a rather challenging topic. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I. The Persons From the digging into the history of Calvinism, I have discovered one clear fact: Calvinism is a religious thinking in the 1500s of Switzerland when he lived and movement that goes well beyond John Calvin, in some worked. -

They are, undoubtedly, those of disputation and argument, dissension and fraction. But there are exceptions, the most notable of which is the English church in Geneva, which was formed in the autumn of 1555 and whose life officially ended when the last English exiles left Geneva in the spring of 1560. The origins of the church lay in the conflicts that had arisen over liturgy in the English church at Frankfurt and these conflicts continued later in Elizabethan England when the Marian exiles, many of them from Geneva, endeavoured to impose their vision of a truly Reformed church on the church of their homeland. For a short period – between the time spent at Frankfurt and the return to England – the English exiles in Geneva were a peaceable community at home with their maker and each other and created there a church that was broad rather than narrow in sympathy. -

Henry Bullinger's Influence on the Church of England
HENRY BULLINGER’S INFLUENCE ON THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND George M. Ella Henry Bullinger, successor to Zwingli in Zurich, never visited England and yet his infl uence can be identifi ed in a vast range of areas of English Christianity from the 1530s through to beyond his death in 1575. His correspondence and hospitality sustained a number of key people to shape the Reformed Church of England. Bullinger’s Contacts with Tudor England When dealing with Calvinism in England during 1558–1640, Patrick Collinson argues that it was not Calvin’s Institutes which represented the centre of theological gravity of the Elizabethan Church but the works of Peter Martyr and Henry Bullinger.1 Mention of the latter is especially interesting as although Martyr served in England for a number of years, Bullinger never set foot in England yet he was still considered as sharing the top rung of the Church of England ladder of fame. Indeed, Bullinger’s importance to the English Reformation can scarcely be exaggerated. Exiles from the persecutions of Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII’s notorious Six Articles found shelter in Bullinger’s, Switzerland and his house was always full of English refugees. For instance, the martyr John Hooper stayed two years in Bullinger’s home with his entire family becoming deeply infl uenced by the beautiful character and plain but profound teaching of the Reformer. Writing to Bullinger in January, 1546, Hooper said: These singular gifts of God exhibited by you to the world at large, I was unwilling to neglect, especially as I perceived them seriously to affect the eternal salvation and happiness of my soul: so that I thought it well worth my while, night and day, with earnest study, and an almost superstitious diligence, to devote my entire attention to your writings.2 It is thus no surprise to fi nd Bullinger’s doctrinal and historical works, accompanied by many commentaries appearing in England during the middle 1520s onwards with Miles Coverdale being one of his many translators. -
