But now because of State policies and waves of modernisation we are struggling to preserve and maintain our traditional ways of life” Mr. Joni Odochao, Intellectual, Karen ethnic, Opening Speech at the Indigenous Peoples Day Festival in Chiangmai, Northern Thailand 2007 Introduction on Indigenous peoples and ethnic groups in Thailand 1 The coalition was established as a loose network at the Workshop Programme on 5th July 2012 on the Shadow Report on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) organised by the Ethnic Studies and Development Center, Sociology Faculty, Chiangmai University in cooperation with Cross Cultural Foundation and the Highland Peoples Taskforce 1 2. The Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand2, in the International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) yearbook on 2008, explained the background of indigenous peoples in Thailand. The indigenous people of Thailand are most commonly referred to as “hill tribes”, sometimes as “ethnic minorities”, and the ten officially recognised ethnic groups are usually called “chao khao” (meaning “hill/mountain people” or “highlanders”). These and other indigenous people live in the North and North-western parts of the country. A few other indigenous groups live in the North-east and indigenous fishing communities and a small population of hunter-gatherers inhabit the South of Thailand. -

It explores this question by drawing on critical social theory and ethnographic field research on Myanmar’s most important ethnic armed groups: the Karen and Kachin insurgencies. The article finds that authority relations between elites and grassroots in these movements are not primarily linked to the distributional outcomes of their insurgent social orders, as a contractualist understanding of rebel governance would suggest. It is argued that the authority of rebel leaders in both analysed movements rather depends on whether they address their grassroots’ claim to due and proper recognition, enabling the latter to derive self-perceived positive social identities through affiliation to the insurgent collective. This contributes to our understanding of the role that authority relations between differently situated elite and non-elite insurgents play in the factional contestation within rebel movements. -

This question has particular dance, who is called the don koh—told me import for one community in New York State—the Karen of Utica. Trulson Revised February, 2017 1 American Baptist International Ministries was formed over two centuries ago by Baptists in the United States who believed that God was calling them to work together “in one sacred effort” to make disciples of all nations. Organized in 1814, it is the oldest Baptist international mission agency in North America and the second oldest in the world, following the Baptist Missionary Society formed in England in 1792 to send William and Dorothy Carey to India. International Ministries currently serves more than 1,800 short- term and long-term missionaries annually, bringing U.S. and Puerto Rico churches together with partners in 74 countries in ministries that tell the good news of Jesus Christ while meeting human needs. This is a review of the missiology exemplified by American Baptist International Ministries that has both emerged from and helped to shape American Baptist life. 2 American Baptists are better understood as a movement than an institution. Whether religious or secular, movements tend to be diverse, multi-directional and innovative. To retain their character and remain true to their core purpose beyond their first generation, movements must be able to do two seemingly opposite things. They must adopt dependable procedures while adapting to changing contexts. If they lose the balance between organization and innovation, most movements tend to become rigidly institutionalized or to break apart. Baptists have experienced both. For four centuries the American Baptist movement has borne its witness within the mosaic of Christianity. -

The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset Codebook (Version 1.0, 2015.07) (Presented in Bartusevičius, Henrikas (2015) Introducing the Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) dataset. Forthcoming in Conflict Management and Peace Science) The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset provides a categorization of 331 intrastate armed conflicts recorded between 1946 and 2010 into four categories: 1. Ethnic governmental; 2. Ethnic territorial; 3. Non-ethnic governmental; 4. Non-ethnic territorial. The dataset uses the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2011, 1946 – 2010 (Themnér & Wallensteen, 2011; also Gleditsch et al., 2002) as a base (and thus is an extension of the UCDP/PRIO dataset). Therefore, the dataset employs the UCDP/PRIO’s operational definition of an aggregate armed conflict: a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths (Themnér, 2011: 1). The dataset contains only internal and internationalized internal armed conflicts listed in the UCDP/PRIO dataset. Internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) without intervention from other states’ (ibid.: 9). Internationalized internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) with intervention from other states (secondary parties) on one or both sides’(ibid.). THAI-YUNNAN PROJECT BULLETIN NUMBER 7 MARCH 2005 Editorial In the seventh issue of this online Bulletin we carry a fascinating continuation of Wasan Panyagaew’s travels (see Bulletin no. 5, 2003) among the diasporic Lue of the upper-Mekong borderlands. Nicholas Farrelly takes us even further afi eld with a stimulating and critical account of the way in which Thai scholars have approached the Tai groups of northeastern India. This builds on his previous critique of Thai writing on the Shan, which was submitted as an Honours Thesis at the Australian National University in 2003. And Runako Samata, in an extract from her Master’s Thesis at Chiang Mai University, gives a detailed account of some aspects of cabbage production by the Karen of Thailand, pointing to close relations with neighbouring groups and complexifying the often trite identifi cations of commercial production with non-Karen peoples. For recent discussions of this important issue see, for example, Yos Santasombat’s “Karen Cultural Capital and the political ecology of symbolic power” in Asian Ethnicity 5:1, 2004 and Andrew Walker’s comment Phra Upakhut, Wat Upakhut, Chiang Mai. Colby Missionaries in East Asia, 1822-1949 Stephanie Ruys de Perez 5/8/2013 Introduction Starting with Colby’s first graduate, George Dana Boardman in 1822, and through the end of the Second World War, Colby alumni worked throughout the world as missionaries. Beginning with Boardman, missionary activity became an integral element of Colby’s purpose and is an important part of the college’s history. While missionary activity is no longer a part of life at Colby today, remnants of the legacy of Colby’s missionaries live on. Out of the fifty-seven foreign missionaries from Colby, forty-seven of them worked on missions to Asia.1 These missionaries had a broad range of experiences based on the very different countries in which they worked in, the range of the time periods in which they served in, and the organizations for which they worked. As Colby was founded as a Baptist institution, the majority of Colby missionaries went by appointment of the American Baptist Missionary Union, which was coincidentally formed only one year after Colby’s founding date, in 1814.2 Perhaps the two most significant foreign missions in Colby’s history were the American Baptist Mission to Burma, and the American Baptist Mission to China. The mission to Burma involved eighteen Colby graduates from the class years from 1822 to 1926, making it the longest and largest mission of Colby graduates.3 The mission to China involved fifteen Colby graduates from the class years from 1854 to 1918, putting it closely behind Burma in both numbers of Colby missionaries and time span of involvement. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis 1 2 Abstract Few studies have systematically analysed how transnational ethnic kin groups affect the behaviour of domestic ethnic groups in an insurgency, in particular how they have an effect on the types of activities they conduct and their targets. The research question of this study is: What are the mechanisms through which transnational ethnic kin groups influence the domestic rebel ethnic group’s strategies? This thesis analyses the influence of transnational communities on domestic challengers to the state as a two-step process. First, it investigates under which conditions transnational ethnic kin groups provide political and economic support to the rebel ethnic group. It shows that networks between rebel groups and transnational communities, which can enable the diffusion of the rebel group’s conflict frames, are key to ensure transnational support. Second, it examines how such transnational support can influence rebel groups’ strategies. It shows that central to our understanding of rebel groups’ strategies is the cohesion (or lack thereof) of the rebel group. Furthermore, it identifies two sources of rebel group’s fragmentation: the state counter-insurgency strategies, and transnational support. The interaction of these two factors can contribute to the fragmentation of the group and in turn to a shift in the strategies it conducts. -
