The 1996 Volleyball season started with some uncertainty. After losing four starters from last year's Lincoln Trail Conference and regional championship team, there were a lot of holes to fill. But the team came out strong. Not only did they repeat as Lincoln Trail Conference Champions, but they also advanced to the sectional for the second con- secutive year. The team ended the season with an overall record of 19-5-3 and a con- ference record of 8-0. This included a conference cham- pionship, a regional champi- onship, and second place in the Wethersfield Invita- tional. Next year holds a lot of promise for Flying Geese Volleyball. We will return nine letter winners along with a new group of talented incoming juniors.

16 Sports ^Arre I/JOIA Keadu wr J^>ome ^Jootbail: The 1996 edition of Flying Geese Football saw the Geese return 8 letterman from a very successful 9 and 2 team from 1995. The operative word in most circles was "rebuild- ing" with 15 seniors graduating from the previous year. However, the '96 Geese would have none of it posting an excellent 7 and 3 record and losing in the first round of the 1A playoffs to a very strong Cambridge squad. The Geese were led by seniors T.J. Dura, Jay Gun- ning, and Doug Brown in the offensive backfield with Ja- son Vanwassenhove, Luke Farran, Guy Robinson, and Darrel Peck manning the offensive line. Dura, Gunning, and Peck also played defense along with senior defensive back Craig Hillier. The Geese had several exciting ball games with the most exciting finish being the late fourth quarter drive and winning TD catch by Robinson in the Annawan game that sealed the fith playoff berth in 6 years for the Geese. Awards given to members of the '96 team were: Most Improved, Andy Newman; MV Back, Jay Gunning; MV Lineman and Most Tackles, Darrel Peck; and Coaches Award, T.J. Dura.

At state tournament time, the Flying Geese traveled to Woodhull to claim the Regional Championship against host Alwood. This was fol- lowed up by defeating Farmington and state power Alleman at the Orion sec- tional. The Key Club once again had a successful year of service. With lots of senior leadership, the club was able to help many people and organizations throughout the community. Unfortunately this year is the last year that Mr. McPheeters will be the Faculty Advisor. His guidance has been greatly appreciated throughout the years. He will be missed!

The Student Coun- cil had another successful year. They started the year with the Homecoming dance and activities. The delicious dinner was held in the cafeteria. The dance was in the elementary gym, and the theme was "Pirates of the Carribean." The dance was a huge success and it was praised by many teach- ers and parents. In the spring, they gave a dona- tion to the Veteran's Day Memorial and sold Mother's Day baskets. This year was very memorable, and was filled with many contributions to the school.

The Media Club ex- perienced many fun times and successful fund-raising ventures this year. They started out the year selling mums during the week of Homecoming. The club also began selling pens and pen- cils in the Secondary Learn- ing Center. In April, the members took the train to Chicago where they spent the day shopping and eating at Ed Debevick's Restaurant. All in all, the year was full of great experiences for all the members.

The summer of 1996 was a big one for our AFS club: Kelly came home from Norway, last year's students went home, Patrick went to Australia for nine weeks, and Daniel came from Brazil. In the fall, the club did a "Fam- ily Feud" type skit for Skit Night. Then during the weekend of March 13-16 we hosted an AFS Weekend for students in the surrounding area. They came to school with us on Friday, went on Saturday and had two teams for Vol- leyball Fun Night. Saturday the stu- dents went home after a brunch in the cafeteria. During the summer of 1996 I, Patrick Griffin, spent nine weeks as an AFS exchange student in Australia. For the first part of my stay I lived on a cattle farm which was about 60 kilometers northeast of Adelaide with the Harris Family. My family loved doing things together. For the second half of my stay I was reunited with the other AFS students and travelled to Camp Knox. Camp Knox is 35 km northwest of Sydney. Our experience was called "Outdoor Adventure." It was a lot more than an adventure. The main part of our adventure was an eleven day expedition. During our expedition we trekked, biked, canoed, and climbed. I had a wonderful time in Australia and cannot wait to go back.

Special Events 71 U.S. gymnast Kerri Strug epitomized the Olympic spirit for many. After falling on her first vault in the women's team competition and injuring her ankle, and unsure whether her score was needed to capture a gold medal for the U.S. team, Strug landed her second vault. The U.S. won a total of 101 medals.

Perhaps the best-kept secret of the year was the September wedding of John F. Kennedy, Jr., and Carolyn Bessette. Only 40 guests were invited to the intimate ceremony on Cumberland Island, Ga., and everyone involved signed an agreement of confidentiality. The couple's return to New York thrust them back in the spotlight, and tabloid reports of marital strain soon followed.

Rap artist Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September. Shakur, whose violent "gangsta" image was reflected in both his life and music, was 25.

The New York Yankees returned to the ranks of baseball's elite when they defeated the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, four games to two. It was the Yankees' first World Series appearance in 18 years, and the 23rd championship won by the team.

After giving up his Senate seat to run for president in 1996, Bob Dole celebrated his nomination at the Republican National Convention. Despite his promise of a 15 percent, across-the-board tax cut, Dole was defeated by incumbent President Bill Clinton. Retrospective OVERVIEW OF EVENTS AND PERSONALITIES OF THE YEAR

President Bill Clinton was re-elected in November, becoming the first Democrat in more than 50 years to win a second term. Promising to "Build a Bridge to the 21st Century," Clinton won easily, despite turmoil in his staff and charges of improper campaign donations.
