Winkler Productions Directed and written by Walt Disney. Animated by Ub Iwerks, Rollin Ham Hamilton, Thurston Harper, Hugh Harman, & Rudolf Ising. Produced by Margaret J. Winkler With Margie Gay as Alice. Music and effects soundtrack added by Raytone Productions, 1930 Left to protect Alice’s house, Julius the cat soon falls into a vat of home-brew liquor in the basement and drinks himself into oblivion. The rats, free to play, entertain themselves by dancing, playing phonograph records, cavorting with the player piano, and using the bathtub for a swimming pool. Soon the party gets completely out of control. (Why Alice was brewing alcohol in her basement remains an open question.) “Speaking of his studio in later years, Disney was fond of saying that ‘it all started with a little mouse’ – but in fact the foundation was laid in 1924 by a little girl.” – Merritt & Kaufman, Walt in Wonderland Young Walt Disney broke into the movie business in Kansas City, as an illustrator for a company that produced glass slides and advertising shorts for theaters. Along with his buddy Fred Harman, he struck out on his own, hoping to jump-start their new company with a partly-animated comical short called Laugh-O-Grams, produced for the influential local theater owner, Frank L. Newman. This was successful enough that they were able to secure funding to hire additional animators, including now- legendary pioneers Ubbe “Ub” Iwerks, Hugh Harman, Rudolph Ising, and Friz Freleng. -

I hope it clarifies some of the statements that Daniel Freedman (Representing Rimini LP, Isaac Cohanzad, Wiseman Residential LLC) has made in letters to this committee dated on December 7, 2017 and October 26, 2017. 1. Mr. Freedman says the property fails to meet the Criteria for a HCM as set forth in LAAC § 22.171.7. The city’s Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC) was put in place for the purpose of deciding if a building meets the criteria of a Historic Cultural Monument (HCM), and the Office of Historic Resources (OHR) serves the CHC. (See Sec. 22.171.10. (c) 4. Procedures for Designation of Monuments. Below) On October 19, 2017 the CHC decided that the Aidlin-Rees Apartments/Rudolf Ising Residence meets the criteria of a Historic- Cultural Monument for its association with Rudolf Ising. Sec. 22.171.10. Procedures for Designation of Monuments. A site, building or structure may be designated as a Monument in accordance with the procedures set forth in this section. Film History of the 1920S Foundations of The
Film History of the 1920s Foundations of the Prolific Film Industry: Films really blossomed in the 1920s, expanding upon the foundations of film from earlier years. Most US film production at the start of the decade occurred in or near Hollywood on the West Coast, although some films were still being made in New Jersey and in Astoria on Long Island (Paramount). By the mid-20s, movies were big business (with a capital investment totaling over $2 billion) with some theatres offering double features. By the end of the decade, there were 20 Hollywood studios, and the demand for films was greater than ever. Most people are unaware that the greatest output of feature films in the US occurred in the 1920s and 1930s (averaging about 800 film releases in a year) - nowadays, it is remarkable when production exceeds 500 films in a year. Throughout most of the decade, silent films were the predominant product of the film industry, having evolved from vaudevillian roots. But the films were becoming bigger, costlier, and more polished. They were being manufactured, assembly-line style, in Hollywood's 'entertainment factories,' in which production was broken down and organized into its various components (writing, costuming, makeup, directing, etc.). Even the earliest films were organized into genres or types, with instantly-recognizable storylines, settings, costumes, and characters. The major genre emphasis was on swashbucklers, historical extravaganzas, and melodramas, although all kinds of films were being produced throughout the decade. Films varied from sexy melodramas and biblical epics by Cecil B. DeMille, to westerns (such as Cruze's The Covered Wagon (1923)), horror films, gangster/crime films, war films, the first feature documentary (Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922)), romances, mysteries, and comedies (from the silent comic masters Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd). -
