INTRODUCTION
French Polynesia (fig. 1) covers a vast oceanic region located at the eastern limit of the Indo-West Pacific province. It consists of 118 islands and islets: high volcanic islands (35) and low coral islands or atolls (83) that represent together, an emerged area of 4000 km2 scattered over 2.500.000 km2 of ocean. These islands form five archipelagos dispersed along a general north-west, south-east axis: (1) The Austral Archipelago (141 7 islands, one of which is an atoll. (2) The Gambier Archipelago (23 km2), 9 volcanic islands, sur- rounded to the north and east by a barrier reef. (3) The Marquesas Archipelago (997 km2), 12 islands, one of which is an atoll. (4) The Society Archipelago (1618 km2), 14 islands: 9 high volcanic islands and 5 atolls. (5) The Tuamotu Archipelago (850 km2), 76 atolls. Little is known about the freshwater crustaceans of French Polynesia. Seurat (1934) mentioned 5 species from Tahiti (Society Archipelago) and 3 species from Mangareva (Gambier Archipelago), Adamson (1935) 6 species from Marquesas islands. A new species of Caridina has been described by Edmond- son (1935) from Rapa island. On account of their easy access and the presence of a logistic support pro- vided by the Department of Rural Economy, 11 islands (fig. 1) have been 126

investigated as part of the present study: Rurutu and Tubuai in the Austral Archipelago, Mangarcva and Taravai in the Gambier Archipelago, Hiva Oa, Nuku Hiva, Ua Huka and Ua Pou in the Marquesas Archipelago, Moorea and Tahiti in the Society Archipelago and finally Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Archipelago.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Taxonomy. - The identification of crustaceans has been carried out by L. B. Holthuis (Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, The Netherlands) and F. A. Chace (National Museum of Natural History, Washington, U.S.A.). Collecting methods. - Two methods of capture have been used: electric fishing mainly and hand-picking occasionally. For the first method, various generators have been used: the "Cormoran" (Gosset, 1975), the "Martin- P?cheur" (Gosset et al., 1971) and an electrogen group "Cadmit Super - Champ" (220 V AC, 300 Hz).
