“The rain came down and the floods came up” – whenever we sing that song in school assemblies, the children really enjoy it, but I doubt it would be quite so well received in some parts of the country right now.

ELTISLEY ROGER’S RAMBLINGS

As I write we are experiencing severe flooding in the South West of the Country, I really do sympathise with the poor victims and I hope the weather improves in order that they may begin to resume their lives. We certainly have had a wet and dismal winter, but the masses of aconites and snowdrops along the Woodland Walk to the Pocket Park are signalling the onset of Spring and the days are getting noticeably longer, so by the time this reaches you, hopefully, we shall see some warmer more settled weather. Mind you, where our son lives in the American Mid West they have 18 inches of snow and are experiencing temperatures down to minus40º - their weather often comes our way!!

We slipped a short PC meeting in this month to finalise the details and award the grass cutting contract for the Green, and to discuss the Diocesan proposals for the sale of the Institute, we also held a short EVGT meeting to sign the contract to loan the Cade Management Committee £5,000.00 to help pay for the extension until they have sufficient funds. It really is a superb building now and getting better all the time, in fact on a recent Sunday morning it was so busy that without the extension it would have been positively crowded! It is good fun on Sundays between 12 and 2pm so if you have not done so yet pop along for a nice drink in pleasant surroundings in good company.

Looking ahead to summer – and it can’t come too soon – we held a useful Feast Week Committee Meeting to plan this year’s event and several ideas were discussed for the week, commencing Friday 4th July with a Concert in the Church, with cricket and evening events all week, the Fete and Donkey Derby on Saturday 12th July and concluding on Sunday 13th. We still welcome ideas and help, the next meeting is on 25th March at The Cade at 7.30pm, all welcome.

I attended a Police Neighbourhood Panel Meeting recently, sadly these useful meetings have been reduced from 4 to 3 per year and the areas covered enlarged considerably. The police will no longer prioritise village concerns such as rat runs, speeding and inconsiderate parking as they consider it’s not cost effective. They will, however, work with Parish Councils and Highways to try to reduce the problem. They are focusing on crime prevention by increasing public awareness on home, garden and car security that they claim, produces positive results, which I am sure it does, but I suspect the real benefits for them are the reduction in crime figures. It’s all about numbers!

There is a petition calling for improvements to the A428 between the A1 and Caxton Gibbet, do register, it’s easy on www.jonathandjanogly.com/a428_petition.

I am planning a Working Party to spruce up the Pocket Park on Saturday 8th March, meeting at the Pocket Park at 10.00am, refreshments provided, please come along and help. Contd.

The next PC Meeting will be at the Cade on Tuesday, 11th March 2014 at 7.30pm see you there.

ST PANDIONIAʼS PARISH

This month is the start of Lent, the time when we prepare for Easter. A Six Villages Lent Course will run at the Cade on Monday nights starting on March 10th at 8pm (more details elsewhere in the newsletter). Do come and join us as we explore what it means to be a follower of Christ. On Sunday 23rd March we will be holding our Annual Parochial Church Council meeting in the church at 7.00pm. This is when we take stock of all that has happened in the past year as well as looking to the future. We would love to see some new faces join the PCC so do chat to Sylvia (880409) or Sarah (880214), churchwardens, if you think you might be interested.

We’re thrilled to be able to tell you that the new church roof is on and a new security system has been fitted to protect the lead roof. We are hoping that there won’t be too many false alarms but if you see or hear the alarm going off, please ring one of the churchwardens immediately. This month our attention will be turning to churchyard maintenance and there will be a spring clear up on Saturday 22nd March 10.00am -12.30pm. Please come along for as little or as long as you like - the more the merrier! We will be working hard but also enjoying bacon butties and a chance for a chat.

The new St Pandionia’s 100 Club for 2014 is now up and running so buy your tickets now to make sure you’re in the draw and have a chance to win up to £75. Contact Nichola to take part on 880285. At the end of March we’ll be organising a clothing collection so start digging out your jumble and putting it to one side. Future events include the annual Safari Supper on Saturday 10th May and a special concert with the Ely Choristers on Friday 19th September. Put the dates in your diary now - these events are a great opportunity to see friends and neighbours as well as raise vital funds to keep the church in a state of repair.

We’re delighted that the planning for Feast Week has started and there will be a number of events in the church including concerts, displays and cream teas. It’s still a little way off but in the meantime, why not pop in to the next St Pandionia’s Cafe in the church on Friday 21st March 9.00-11.30am? If you would like a lift please ring Nichola on 880285.

Parish Council News: See also the website www.graveleyvillage.co.uk for PC and Neighbourhood Watch news.

There was a well attended open meeting on January 23rd to hear about the implications of the proposed small developments within the village. This was arranged by the Parish Council so as to help villagers when completing the household questionnaires on the subject that had been circulated earlier. A member of the South Cambs Planning staff outlined the procedures which would necessarily be followed, given that the proposals were not at present part of the Local Plan, and an essential element in this would be that there should be general agreement within the village on the way ahead. This was followed by an open discussion where the advantages and disadvantages of enlarging the village were voiced by residents, all of which the Parish Council hoped would be helpful in allowing villagers to make up their minds in an informed way. The results of the referendum will be made public in due course.

The next PC meeting will be on 20th March. N.B. There is still a need for more Councillors!

Church News: At the meeting on 22nd January to discuss the future of the church in Graveley and Papworth St Agnes the Parochial Church Council were well supported by the active members of the St Botolph’s congregation. Among other things the future purpose and aims of the church in the village and the possible uses of the church building were discussed at some length. In all, it appeared that the diocesan representatives who conducted the meeting found the occasion useful as a parish level starter to the larger review to ‘Imagine the Future’ which has been put in place by the Bishop.
