ELTISLEY ROGER’S RAMBLINGS

Well, I predicted it, and sure enough Highways (formerly the Highways Agency – whatever did that pointless rebranding cost?) failed to appear yet again at a meeting on 29th September to discuss the proposed new dualled A428. If this is an indication of their efficiency then perhaps the road will never appear also – I expect holidays got in the way! It is worth noting that if the new road is eventually built work will not commence until 2020. We continue to press for improvements to the Road junction, particularly as the A428 is advertised by Highways England as the “preferred diversion route” during the work on the A14 – can you believe that? – so the overstretched road will be even busier. To add power to our elbow please write to Highways England, your County Councillor and your MP expressing your concern. If you are unsure of the contact details please phone me 01480 880122.

As I write we are enjoying a long spell of settled mild weather but winter is just around the corner, and if you have not done so it would be opportune to fill up your oil tanks, particularly as prices are rising. Our Fuel Club means fewer lorries entering the village as they offer a top up service around the end of the first week of each month. Their details are Conquest Oil Company, on 01525 402209/402073.

Sadly with the darker evenings also comes increases in opportunist burglaries, November, apparently, statistically has the highest incidence of this type of crime, back gardens and garden sheds are particularly vulnerable and simple measures like timers on lights can indicate your presence even when you are out. A few minutes thought of where your property may be vulnerable could save you the trauma of the aftermath of unwanted visitors.

Now Poo, a subject dear to all our hearts and one that often appears on these pages. We still suffer from inconsiderate dog owners not clearing up after their pets, but what really amazes me are those who bag it and then leave the bag on the path!! explain that to me if you can, particularly when we have so many Dog Waste Bins in the Village. If you spot an offender you can ring South Cambs District Council and report them anonymously, so please ‘bag it and bin it’

The Christmas Lights are scheduled to go up on the Peace Tree on Friday 2nd December, any offers of help to me please, and another date for your diaries, the Village Christmas Party will be on Saturday, 3rd December at The Cade 2pm – 4.30pm

The next PC meeting will be at The Cade on Tuesday, 8th November commencing at 7.30pm hope to see you there.

As always, praise or problems to me at 45 Caxton End or on 01480 880122 or [email protected] or our Clerk Jane Bowd on 01480 468451 or [email protected]

Coffee Morning On Saturday 1st October Toseland PCC held a Coffee Morning and Produce Sale in St Michael’s Church. This was a very enjoyable event, raising a wonderful £308. Many thanks to all those who helped on the day, donated or came along on the day!

The next Coffee Morning will be held in the late spring 2017 and will include a plant sale. ST PANDIONIA’S PARISH – NOVEMBER

Many thanks to all those who helped with the churchyard clear up last month. It was great to have so many helpers and we made a lot of progress. This month our thoughts turn to remembrance and we are looking forward to the “Lest We Forget” concert at the church on Saturday 12th November. More details elsewhere in the newsletter so book your tickets now. Our annual service of Remembrance will be on Sunday 13th November 9.00am starting at the lych gate.

You may have noticed the scaffolding that is currently up around the church. Earlier this year we were shocked to discover that urgent repairs were needed to the tower. Bits of masonry had quite literally started to fall off and this discovery was followed by a large quote to put things right. However, thanks to your generosity at the Safari Supper and Fete as well as grants from the National Churches Trust, All Churches Trust and the Amey Foundation, amazingly the money has come in and the work is going ahead. Please could we ask you to be extra vigilant while the scaffolding is in place, particularly as the nights get longer. Church lead thieves have recently targeted local churches so if you see anything suspicious ring the police immediately.

As we thank God for His provision for our church building, we also want to be generous to others. One small way we try and do this is by having a collection box for St Neots Food Bank in the church - it’s not just food that is needed, loo rolls, toiletries and cleaning supplies are also much appreciated. Do add to the box when you can. Finally congratulations to our latest 100 club winners: 1st prize Iris Purser, 2nd prize Sylvia McSweeney and 3rd prize Mel Lowther. The final 2016 Draw will take place next month and there are a few numbers still available. Do give Nichola (880285) a call so you have a chance to win.

Graveley always seems to be noted for little news in the Six Villages Newsletter. This month I felt it should be recorded that we will be losing two of our villagers, Jo and Leslie Wheeler, who have been here for many years and have decided to relocate. I hope I can speak for the village in thanking them for all they have done over a number of years. We will miss them and send them off with our love and best wishes for the future. John Hancox

Not quite Christmas Panto, but members, friends and other visitors were treated to an evening of gloriously traditional professional entertainment when Chris Bylett visited us in October with his ‘friends’ Desmond and Charlie. Chris is a superb ventriloquist, raconteur and singer – a joyous evening.

New members and lady visitors are always welcome to regular meetings which are usually held at The Cade Pavilion. To find out more contact Inez - 880358, or Carol - 880328, or just come along.

Wednesday 9th November. With thoughts of the festive season ahead and other times for celebrating with a cake, Serena Page (from “Sugar Daddy’s” in St Neots) will be introducing us to the art of Sugar Craft.

23rd November: The Story of Stirling Bomber N3703 which crashed over in April 1942 by Roger Leivers

****************************** In November we remember the sacrifice made by Ernest Walter Kidman, who was killed in the First World War.

Walter, as he was known, was in the 7th Suffolks. He died on Monday 26th November 1917, in the campaign to take the town of Cambrai. He was 29 years old. Walter has no known grave; he is one of 7,000 men commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial to the missing. The 7th Suffolks were almost wiped out in the Battle of Cambrai.

Do you want to have a say in improving services from Health or Social Care? Cambridgeshire Alliance for Independent Living is a local independent charity that works to improve services by raising the voice of people living with all disabilities. One of the ways we do this is by bringing people with all disabilities and carers (called Independent Members), Health and Social Care teams, and voluntary sector organisations (such as Age UK, Voice Ability, Cam Sight and the Carer’s Trust) together at ‘Partnership Board’ meetings. The Partnership Boards are opportunities for you to have your say about what is good about Health and Social Care services, such as home care and day centres, and what you would like to improve or where you would like to see changes. Recent activities by the Partnership Boards include raising concerns about Home Care, which are now being examined closely by the County Council, involvement in helping to develop a new Carers Strategy and involvement in the process for choosing organisations to run Carers Services. Interested in getting involved? We are looking for new Independent Members to join our boards. We offer full training and support, out of pocket expenses and reimbursement of travel. If you think this could be you, please contact Leisha O’Brien, Development Officer at Cambridgeshire Alliance for Independent Living by phoning 0300 111 2301 or email [email protected] To find out more, take a look at Partnership Board pages on our website www.cambridgeshirealliance.org.uk Wednesday 2nd November at Manor Farm, , 7.45 for 8pm until 9pm

For those who are interested in exploring Christianity in a relaxed and informal way. Please come and bring a friend.

For more information please contact Mike Bigg on 01480 839147.

Home Communion If you are a regular worshipper and become housebound we still want to share in the life of your Christian community. If you are having difficulty getting to church, but a lift would make that possible please contact the team office on 01954 719718 and we will be able to help. If you cannot get out and would like to receive Holy Communion at home please let the office know and we will arrange for the sacrament to be brought to you on a regular basis. This also applies to those who are seriously ill and bed bound.
