Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises Institut Catholique de Paris Great authors in French cinema By Patricia Maincent Course description This film course will focus on the history of french cinema, from its scientific beginning at the end of the 19th century, along with the industrial revolution, through the diversity of representations in the 20 th century up to the beginning of the 21st. In order to embody those changes, we will study the important authors, whose contribution have made french cinema unique in its style. Historical films will be the main guideline, but in its widest aspect, from opinion position to historical reenactment and how documentary becomes historical fact. This theme has been fully explored since the beginning of cinema, and that will allow us to question representation and its diverse evolution along with society. Leading French filmmakers challenged this rediscovery of the past, guiding us through the analysis of the language of the moving image. Course structure Each course will develop chronologically one moment of french cinema focusing on one filmmaker and one film. but also the historical context, of the film’s release and the history. Each film will be analysed in its filmic components, (sound, editing, camera movements..) and of course discussed ; history being interesting in order to have a better view on our world. ABSTRACT Learning Lackluster Lessons: Counterinsurgency in the Algerian Revolution and the Iraq Surge Patrick Kerry Ormsby Director: Dr. David A. Smith Ph.D. Modern American History The Algerian Revolution provided two distinct avenues for approaching irregular, population centric conflicts typical of the post-World War II world. Captain David Galula’s counterinsurgency campaign (1956-58) provided the blueprint for a hearts-and- minds counterinsurgency, while the Battle of Algiers (1956-57) displayed a more brutal approach that garnered short-term results at great strategic costs. Writers of modern American counterinsurgency doctrine purposefully drew from the former and inadvertently from the latter but removing the tactics making it “effective.” False historical narratives unfortunately clouded Galula’s campaign which had fundamental shortcomings undiscussed in his memoirs. Additionally, several noteworthy hearts-and- minds counterinsurgencies proved to bear more similarity with the brutal approach. The Iraq Surge (2007), the first practical application of modern American counterinsurgency doctrine and an example of progression in that it did not feature torture, owned fundamental flaws not only unique to it but also others eerily similar to those within French counterinsurgency campaigns in Algeria. MoMA CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF RIALTO PICTURES WITH 17-FILM RETROSPECTIVE Series by Leading Distributor of Classic Repertory Cinema Spotlights Some of the Finest Filmmaking Talents Such as Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Jean- Luc Godard, and Jean-Pierre Melville Rialto Pictures: Reviving Classic Cinema July 25–August 10, 2007 The Roy and Niuta Titus 1 and 2 Theaters NEW YORK, June 26, 2007—Celebrating a decade of titles issued by Rialto Pictures, The Museum of Modern Art presents a 17-film survey from the distributor’s catalogue of extraordinary cinema. Rialto Pictures: Reviving Classic Cinema, presented July 25 through August 10, 2007, in The Roy and Niuta Titus 1 and 2 theaters, includes some of the most acclaimed films produced over the past six decades. These classics of cinema include Jules Dassin’s stylish and taut heist film Rififi (1955), Carol Reed’s memorable film noir thriller The Third Man (1949), and Jean-Pierre Melville’s powerful depiction of French Resistance fighters in L’armée des ombres (Army of Shadows, 1969), which was released in the United States for the first time in 2006, to wide critical acclaim. The exhibition is organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. In 1997, film programmer and curator Bruce Goldstein established Rialto Pictures, a company dedicated to invigorating classic cinema by ensuring that it continued to be viewed, as originally intended, on the big screen. Since then Goldstein, in conjunction with his partner Adrienne Halpern, has released almost 40 fresh, and often restored, 35mm prints of classic foreign films with new English subtitles not seen in theaters since their original runs, and has premiered films never before distributed in America.
