Their ancestors arrived in South Africa in 1735. Constantia Uitsig had been a portion of Simon van der Stel's original grant of Groot Constantia. In 1894 Willem Lategan married Antoinette Bredell of Schoemanshoek, and with her inheritance he built the present homestead of Constantia Uitsig. In 1988 the farm was purchased by David and Marlene McCay. Together they have restored the farm to its former glory, and Constantia Uitsig now boasts award winning wines, three world-renowned restaurants, a private cricket oval, spa and a 16-roomed luxury hotel. In 2006 fifty percent of the wine estate was bought by a consortium. Just 20 minutes from the heart of the city, Constantia Uitsig is truly Cape Town's own vineyard. The breathtaking rural beauty of a valley, where vineyard rows stretch up the mountainside, is just one of many compelling reasons to visit. +27 21 794 6500 [email protected] Spaanschemat River Road, Constantia, Kaapstad Groot Constantia "Historical Winery in Constantia" Founded in 1685, Groot Contansia is one of the oldest wineries in South Africa. Located in a beautiful region at the foothills of Cape Town, with a balance of trees, sun, wind, and rain, Constantia wine lands are not only beautiful but in an ideal location. There is no better example of Dutch architecture than Groot Constansia, with its famous Manor House and other surrounding buildings. There is a history and legacy of the quality of wine that comes from this farm, and while they offer a wide range of wines, the sweet blends are world-renowned. Both wine tasting and tours are available seven days a week. In addition, the Jonkershuis restaurant on the grounds is a great way to enjoy a meal after wine tasting. +27 21 794 5128 www.grootconstantia.co.z enquiries@grootconstantia. Groot Constantia Road, a/ co.za Kaapstad Buitenverwachting "Beautiful Land" Buitenverwachting originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, founded by Governor Simon van der Stel. This beautiful piece of land changed hands often, yet flourished as a wine farm thanks to the 90,000 vines planted in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete. The farm has been lovingly restored to its former glory, while extensive planting of the most selected by ~ souTH AFRica cultivators was initiated. The result was a maiden grape harvest in 1985 for the 'new' Buitenverwachting, the first harvest in 30 years. It was an historic achievement that lived up to the estate's name,'Beyond Expectation'. Consistently rated among the top ten restaurants in the country, the fare at the estate's eatery ranges from noble continental to traditional South African dishes, in an exclusive venue overlooking the vineyards. +27 21 794 5190 buitenverwachting.co.za/ [email protected] Klein Constantia Road, m Constantia, Kaapstad Klein Constantia "Stunning Estate with Historical Literary Twist" With its historic Cape Dutch homestead and superb views across the valley and False Bay, Klein Constantia, some 15 minutes by car from Cape Town, has frequently been described as one of the world's most beautiful vineyard locations. The estate forms part of the land granted to Simon van der Stel in 1685. This early Dutch Governor of the Cape planted the first vineyards in Constantia, which later produced the legendary Constantia dessert wine. Requested by Napoleon and praised in the writings of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, this wine was sought after by the European élite of the 18th and 19th centuries. Continuing the standards of a glorious bygone era, all Klein Constantia's wines are grown, made and bottled on the estate. +27 21 794 5188 www.kleinconstantia.com/ [email protected] Klein Constantia Road, Constantia, Kaapstad Steenberg Vineyards "A Modern Development in an Historic Setting" Steenberg, once known as ‘Zwaaneweide' or ‘Zwaanswyk', was the first land grant made in the Constantia Valley in 1682. The land originally went to a young widow, Catherine Ras, and wines were first produced here in 1695. Today, some 300 years later, the historic 'werf' (original homestead) has been painstakingly restored in the style of an 18th century farm. The farmsteads, including the manor house and other buildings, have been declared a national monument. The main gable, a 'holbol' (convex- concave) outlined by heavy moldings in a small keystone, is the only surviving example of its type in the Cape Peninsula. This prime wine estate has now been developed to include an exquisite country hotel, an 18-hole championship golf course and a residential development. +27 21 713 2211 www.steenberg- [email protected] Steenberg Road, Westlake, vineyards.co.za/ Kaapstad KIJK MET ONS MEE: cityseeker.com Algemene voorwaarden | PRIVACYBELEID | API | CONTACTEER ONS | Auteursrecht 2020 CITYSEEKER Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

  • A Brief History of Wine in South Africa Stefan K
European Review - Fall 2014 (in press) A brief history of wine in South Africa Stefan K. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006). The earliest evidence of wine on the African continent comes from Abydos in Southern Egypt.
