MARPRELATE TRACTS: HAY ANY WORK FOR COOPER 1 ________________________________________________________________________________ Hay Any Work For Cooper.1 Or a brief pistle directed by way of an hublication2 to the reverend bishops, counselling them if they will needs be barrelled up3 for fear of smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state, that they would use the advice of reverend Martin for the providing of their cooper. Because the reverend T.C.4 (by which mystical5 letters is understood either the bouncing parson of East Meon,6 or Tom Cook's chaplain)7 hath showed himself in his late Admonition To The People Of England to be an unskilful and beceitful8 tub-trimmer.9 Wherein worthy Martin quits himself like a man, I warrant you, in the modest defence of his self and his learned pistles, and makes the Cooper's hoops10 to fly off and the bishops' tubs11 to leak out of all cry.12 Penned and compiled by Martin the metropolitan. Printed in Europe13 not far from some of the bouncing priests. 1 Cooper: A craftsman who makes and repairs wooden vessels formed of staves and hoops, as casks, buckets, tubs. (OED, p.421) The London street cry ‘Hay any work for cooper’ provided Martin with a pun on Thomas Cooper's surname, which Martin expands on in the next two paragraphs with references to hubs’, ‘barrelling up’, ‘tub-trimmer’, ‘hoops’, ‘leaking tubs’, etc. 2 Hub: The central solid part of a wheel; the nave. (OED, p.993) 3 A commodity commonly ‘barrelled-up’ in Elizabethan England was herring, which probably explains Martin's reference to ‘smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state’. -

The Holinshed editors: religious attitudes and their consequences By Felicity Heal Jesus College, Oxford This is an introductory lecture prepared for the Cambridge Chronicles conference, July 2008. It should not be quoted or cited without full acknowledgement. Francis Thynne, defending himself when writing lives of the archbishops of Canterbury, one of sections of the 1587 edition of Holinshed that was censored, commented : It is beside my purpose, to treat of the substance of religion, sith I am onelie politicall and not ecclesiasticall a naked writer of histories, and not a learned divine to treat of mysteries of religion.1 And, given the sensitivity of any expression of religious view in mid-Elizabethan England, he and his fellow-contributors were wise to fall back, on occasions, upon the established convention that ecclesiastical and secular histories were in two separate spheres. It is true that the Chronicles can appear overwhelmingly secular, dominated as they are by scenes of war and political conflict. But of course Thynne did protest too much. No serious chronicler could avoid giving the history of the three kingdoms an ecclesiastical dimension: the mere choice of material proclaimed religious identity and, among their other sources, the editors drew extensively upon a text that did irrefutably address the ‘mysteries of religion’ – Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.2 Moreover, in a text as sententious as Holinshed the reader is constantly led in certain interpretative directions. The Coronation Bible a Fly-Past Over Buckingham Palace, and a Gun Salute Fired at Noon
ISSUE No. 37, June 2006 ISSN 0840-5565 n 7 June of this year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will officially celebrate her eightieth birthday Owith the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, The Coronation Bible a fly-past over Buckingham Palace, and a gun salute fired at noon. In this country few will probably be aware of the festivities, but many would still acknowledge the tireless efforts of this royal octogenarian on behalf of her country and the Commonwealth. In the holdings of the Fisher Library is a handsome souvenir of the Queen’s reign, the so-called “Coronation Bible,” printed at the Oxford University Press under the direction of Charles Batey in 953. Batey had worked at the Press since 929, and assumed the role of Printer to the University in 946. One of his great passions in that capacity was to preserve and make better known the ancient types that had been used at the venerable Press throughout its history. The crisp, clean font chosen for the Coronation Bible is a credit to his expertise in this field. The composition of the Bible actually began in February of 952, shortly after the death of King George VI; among its many distinguishing characteristics is the fact that the entire book was the work of a single compositor. While the vast majority of the Bibles in this edition were printed on regular paper and expressly intended for pulpit use, an additional twenty-five were printed on too bulky to be used gracefully, while the of Oxford University Press in 930. -
A Critical Analysis of Anglican and Roman Catholic Bilateral Relations from a Theological Perspective
ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ANGLICAN AND ROMAN CATHOLIC BILATERAL RELATIONS FROM A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE James N. Amanze Abstract ___________________________________________________________________________ This paper is a critical examination of Anglican-Roman Catholic bilateral relations from a theological perspective. The main argument of the paper is that while the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches consider themselves to be in a special relationship as a result of a number of theological agreements reached over the past forty years aimed at bringing them closer together than ever before, they are far from achieving visible church unity. The achievements made over the years, in the form of agreed theological texts have, from time to time, been derailed by subtle theological differences between the two church traditions. This can best be described in the words of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin “One step forward, two steps back”. The paper concludes that given the small amount of progress, which is pushed back by a large amount of setbacks, church unity is unattainable. Introduction Ecumenism, that is, the activities to achieve church unity after the 16th Century Protestant Reformation in Germany has been the hallmark of the church in the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries. Philip Potter, once General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, noted that the ecumenical movement was “the means by which the churches, which form the house, the oikos of God, are seeking so live and witness before all peoples that the whole oikoumene may become the oikos of God through the crucified and risen Christ in the power of the life- giving Spirit.”70 This is in line with the views of the Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) of the Second Vatican Council, according to which “The Church established by Christ the Lord is, indeed, one and unique. -

The Quest for the Historical Hooker BY JOHN BooTY T is questionable to what degree the historian or biographer can I recover and represent a person out of the past. The task may be one of great difficulty when there is a wealth of material, as is true with regard to John Henry Newman. But the task may be infinitely more difficult where there is a scarcity of evidence, as is true with regard to William Shakespeare. In the quest for the historical Hooker we encounter a moderate amount of material, but we are also left with gaps and, as we now realize, we are confronted by some conflicting evidence, requiring the use of careful judgment. We begin with certain indisputable facts concerning Richard Hooker's life, facts which can be verified by reference to documents which the historian can examine and rely upon. 1 Hooker was born in 1554 at Heavitree in Devonshire of parents who were prominent in their locality but by no means wealthy. With the assistance of an uncle, the young Hooker was educated first at a grammar school in Exeter and then, under the patronage of John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury, entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Subsequently he became an instructor in the University, was made a fellow of his college and was ordained to the ministry of the Church of England. There he remained, delivering the Hebrew lecture from 1579 until he departed from Oxford in 1584. Three facts concerning his time at the University are worth noting. The first is that he became the tutor of George Cranmer, whose father was a nephew of the famous Archbishop, and of Edwin Sandys, son of the Archbishop of York who became Hooker's patron after the death of Jewel in 1571. -
