Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs X. JLALFWAY THROUGH Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's four-year term it was clear that his Red-Green coalition—his own Social Democratic Party (SPD) together with the environmentalist Greens—had succeeded in co-opting the traditional agenda of the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU), leaving the opposition without a substantial issue. The government accomplished this by moving to the political center, primarily through a set of pro-business tax cuts that were expected to spur the economy. The conservative opposition was also handicapped by scandal. Former chan- cellor Helmut Kohl shocked the nation at the end of 1999 by refusing to clarify his role in the CDU's financial irregularities, and in January 2000 he resigned as honorary chairman of the party. The affair continued to get headlines through- out 2000 as more illegal payments during the Kohl years came to light. All that Kohl himself would acknowledge was his personal receipt of some $1 million not accounted for in the party's financial records, but he refused to name the donors. Considering his "word of honor" not to divulge the source of the money more important than the German law requiring him to do so, he compared his treat- ment by the German mass media to the Nazi boycott of Jewish stores during the Hitler regime. Most observers believed that Kohl would end up paying a fine and would not serve any jail time. The Kohl scandal triggered an internal party upheaval. Wolfgang Schauble, Kohl's successor as CDU leader, admitted in February that he too had taken un- reported campaign contributions, and was forced to resign.

  • Alastair Campbell
Alastair Campbell Adviser, People’s Vote campaign 2017 – 2019 Downing Street Director of Communications 2000 – 2003 Number 10 Press Secretary 1997– 2000 5 March 2021 This interview may contain some language that readers may find offensive. New Labour and the European Union UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE): Going back to New Labour, when did immigration first start to impinge in your mind as a potential problem when it came to public opinion? Alastair Campbell (AC): I think it has always been an issue. At the first election in 1997, we actually did do stuff on immigration. But I can remember Margaret McDonagh, who was a pretty big fish in the Labour Party then, raising it often. She is one of those people who does not just do politics in theory, in an office, but who lives policy. She is out on the ground every weekend, she is knocking on doors, she is talking to people. I remember her taking me aside once and saying, ‘Listen, this immigration thing is getting bigger and bigger. It is a real problem’. That would have been somewhere between election one (1997) and election two (2001), I would say. Politics and government are often about very difficult competing pressures. So, on the one hand, we were trying to show business that we were serious about business and that we could be trusted on the economy. One of the messages that business was giving us the whole time was that Page 1/31 there were labour shortages, skill shortages, and we were going to need more immigrants to come in and do the job.

Global Citizen And The European Commission Mobilize $1.5 Billion In Cash Grants, And $5.4 Billion In Loans And Guarantees–For A Total Of $6.9 Billion Pledged–To Combat The Disproportionate Impact Of COVID-19 On Vulnerable And Disadvantaged Communities CommPRO Editorial Staff International‌ ‌advocacy‌ ‌organization‌ Global Citizen and the European Commission (EC) today‌ hosted Global Goal: Unite for Our Future – The Summit and The Concert, as part of a global campaign to coordinate the development of COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines, and to ensure equitable access to everyone, everywhere. Building on the success of the European Union’s May 4th pledging conference, the Global Goal: Unite for Our Future campaign has achieved another milestone in global health efforts. The campaign is a continuation of efforts aimed at mobilizing the tens of billions of dollars in the funding still needed to combat COVID-19, make tests, treatments, and vaccines available for everyone, everywhere, and protect the world’s most fragile health systems and communities. “Global Goal: Unite for Our Future was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are proud to join the European Commission, and over 40 governments from around the world, to ensure COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines would be made available for everyone, everywhere,” said Hugh Evans, CEO of Global Citizen. “The $6.9 billion that was pledged today to support the world’s poorest and most marginalized communities is an incredible next step on our journey out of the COVID-19 era, but there is more still to be done as no one is safe until everyone is safe.” Combining policy and entertainment, Global Goal: Unite for Our Future – The Summit and The Concert aired in more than 180 countries, and streamed globally across Youtube, Facebook and Twitter.
