The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release May 1994 MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994 A retrospective celebrating the seventieth anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, the legendary Hollywood studio that defined screen glamour and elegance for the world, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on June 24, 1994. MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. On view through September 30, the exhibition highlights a number of classics, as well as lesser-known films by directors who deserve wider recognition. MGM's films are distinguished by a high artistic level, with a consistent polish and technical virtuosity unseen anywhere, and by a roster of the most famous stars in the world -- Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, and Spencer Tracy. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991). Less familiar titles are Monta Bell's Pretty Ladies and Lights of Old Broadway (both 1925), Rex Ingram's The Garden of Allah (1927) and The Prisoner - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 of Zenda (1929), Fred Zinnemann's Eyes in the Night (1942) and Act of Violence (1949), and Anthony Mann's Border Incident (1949) and The Naked Spur (1953).

FRITZ LANG: A “DARK MIRROR” TO GERMANY AND AMERICA by ELLEN KATHLEEN LUTON (Under the direction of Dr. Christine Haase) ABSTRACT This thesis traces the transition of Fritz Lang from German cinema to American. The development of Lang’s style and techniques used to demonstrate social and political aspects of society both in post war Germany and post war America are being discussed. Furthermore this thesis shows, through the close study of two of Lang’s major films, the expressionistic tendencies that Lang later conveyed in his noir films. • Blazing Saddles by Michael Schlesinger
Blazing Saddles By Michael Schlesinger It’s often a sign that a genre has come to the end of the line when a parody becomes a hit. “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” was the nail in the coffin of the tradi- tional monster movie. “Airplane!” crashed the all-star dis- aster epic. And the western was already bleeding in the street when “Blazing Saddles” came along. After that, the studios were pretty much out of the oater business, and there was nothing left to do but sit shiva. To be sure, there had been comedy-westerns since al- most the beginning; everyone from Roscoe Arbuckle to Don Knotts had strapped on the ol’ six-shooter at least once. And there had been genuine satires as well, nota- bly “Cat Ballou” and the various Burt Kennedy spoofs, particularly “Support Your Local Sheriff.” But “Saddles” was in a class by itself. The affection for the genre was as palpable as it was in those previous films, but there was a different sensibility on hand: raucous, uninhibited, vulgar, and definitely Borscht Belt. Plus a surprising les- son on race relations. Quite a lot for a modestly- budgeted picture with even more modest expectations. Although he was a major comedic force on TV, records and elsewhere, Mel Brooks hadn’t had much success on the big screen. Yes, “The Producers” won a Screenplay Oscar, but it was still mostly a cult favorite. “The Twelve Original release poster. Courtesy Library of Congress Chairs,” released by a small indie, barely made a ripple. Prints and Photographs Online Collection.
