RESUMEN INTRODUCCIÓN Taxonomía Smilax consta aproximadamente de 300 especies en zonas templadas y tropicales en ambos hemisferios (Judd et al. 2002). Las plantas de Smílax son bejucos subleñosos, rara vez herbáceos, dioicos, que se originan de un rizoma delgado o grueso. Usualmente trepan mediante pares de zarcillos que se originan en los pecíolos y a menudo poseen aguijones en tallos y hojas. Poseen hojas alternas con 3 a 9 nervios paralelos o triplinervias, conectados por nervaduras reticuladas. Tienen flores pequeñas, dispuestas en umbelas axilares, a veces racemosas, con 6 tépalos libres, iguales, 6 estambres libres, ovario súpero, 1 ó 2 óvulos en cada lóculo; estaminodios presentes en las flores femeninas. Los frutos son bayas globosas, negras, púrpuras, rojas o anaranjadas (Cronquist 1981, Huft 1994, Gómez-Laurito 1998). Se considera que en Mesoamérica existen

April, 2011 1 INTRODUCTION In mid June 2010, the Carolina Vegetation Survey conducted an initial inventory of natural communities along the far western montane counties of North Carolina. There had never been a project designed to classify the diversity of natural upland (and some wetland) communities throughout this portion of North Carolina. Furthermore, the data captured from these plots will enable us to refine the community classification within the broader region. The goal of this report is to determine a classification structure based on the synthesis of vegetation data obtained from the June 2010 sampling event, and to use the resulting information to develop restoration targets for disturbed ecosystems location in this general region of North Carolina. STUDY AREA AND FIELD METHODS From June 13‐20 2010, a total of 48 vegetation plots were established throughout the far western mountains of North Carolina (Figure 1). Focus locations within the study area included the Pisgah National Forest (NF) (French Broad and Pisgah Ranger Districts), the Nantahala NF (Tusquitee Ranger District), and Sandymush Game Land. Target natural communities throughout the week included basic oak‐hickory forest, rich cove forest, northern hardwood and boulderfield forest, chestnut oak forest, montane red cedar woodland, shale slope woodland, montane alluvial slough forest, and low elevation xeric pine forest.

  • Dry-Mesic Basic Oak–Hickory Forest (Piedmont Subtype)
    DRY-MESIC BASIC OAK–HICKORY FOREST (PIEDMONT SUBTYPE) Concept: Type covers dry-mesic Piedmont and Coastal Plain forests with less acidic and more fertile soils than typical, associated with mafic or intermediate crystalline rocks or occasionally calcareous sedimentary rocks. They are equivalent in moisture regime to Dry-Mesic Oak– Hickory Forest, and fall between Basic Mesic Forest and Dry Basic Oak–Hickory Forest on appropriate substrates. Subtype covers examples in the Piedmont, believed to be floristically distinct from those in the Coastal Plain. Sites: Soils: Hydrology: Vegetation: Dynamics: Range and Abundance: Ranked G3G4 Associations and Patterns: Distinguishing Features: The Dry-Mesic Basic Oak–Hickory Forest type is distinguished from Basic Mesic Forest by a drier flora and from Dry Basic Oak–Hickory Forest by a more mesic flora. The canopy is dominated by Quercus alba, along with other oaks and hickories. There is essentially no Fagus grandifolia in the canopy, and Liriodendron is scarce. Drier site oaks such as Quercus stellata, Quercus marilandica, or Quercus falcata are scarce or absent. This type is distinguished from Dry-Mesic Oak–Hickory Forest by occurrence of more base- loving flora that includes species such as Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Frangula caroliniana, Celtis spp., Fraxinus americana, Cercis canadensis, Brachyelytrum erectum, and Dichanthelium boscii. Basic indicators also include a set of species that are characteristic of more mesic or floodplain communities but that occur in dry sites that are less acidic. These include Acer floridanum, Carya ovata, Elymus hystrix, Elymus virginicus, Phryma leptostachya, and Phegopteris hexagonoptera. Characteristic species of acidic soils, such as Oxydendrum arboreum, Vaccinium stamineum, Vaccinium pallidum, Vaccinium tenellum, Gaylussacia frondosa, and Chimaphila maculata may be present, but don’t predominate as they do in Dry Mesic Oak–Hickory Forest.

As the development and use of steamboats along the Mississippi River increased, travel on the Trace diminished and the route began to be reclaimed by nature. A renewed interest in the Trace began during, and following, the Great Depression. In the early 1930’s, then Mississippi congressman T. J. Busby promoted interest in the Trace from a historical perspective and also as an opportunity for employment in the area. Legislation was introduced by Busby to conduct a survey of the Trace and in 1936 actual construction of the modern roadway began. Development of the present Natchez Trace Parkway (NATR) which follows portions of the original route has continued since that time. The last segment of the NATR was completed in 2005. The federal lands that comprise the modern route total about 52,000 acres in 25 counties through the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The route, about 445 miles long, is a manicured parkway with numerous associated rest stops, parks, and monuments. Current land use along the NATR includes upland forest, mesic prairie, wetland prairie, forested wetlands, interspersed with numerous small agricultural croplands.

A Systematic inventory was taken using a handheld GPS to navigate inspection lines in a northerly and southerly direction. Inventory lines were spaced approximately 175 feet apart to identify any unique trees or timber types within the proposed development area. Notes were collected in the field regarding two different timber types present. Refer to the attached map for identification of the stands. Each stand was delineated using GIS and current aerial photography, and then confirmed during the inspection.     EXCLUDED TAXA Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora Current as of June 5, 2021 © Virginia Botanical Associates 2021 INTRODUCTION The following is an annotated list of more than 300 taxa that have been reported for Virginia but are currently excluded from mapping in the Digital Atlas. The reasons for their exclusion fall into several categories, the most common of which are 1) lack of supporting voucher specimens, or 2) lack of evidence that a taxon meets the basic criteria for establishment described in About the Digital Atlas. Also included are species that are known or suspected to be errors based on misidentifications. VBA decided to post this list in order to call attention to these taxa, generate new information, and reduce the perpetuation of misinformation that has characterized many of the entries. Massey (1961) reported many species from Virginia without known documentation or based on errors of interpretation of the "Gray's manual range." Despite years of cleaning up these errors and unsubstantiated taxa in the first three editions of the Atlas, many of them were given a new lease on life by Kartesz (1999), and from there by other sources such as USDA Plants and iterative drafts of Weakley's regional flora (most of these errors have been corrected in the current (2015), online version of Kartesz's North American Plant Atlas). Previous errors mapped in hard-copy Atlas editions and the Digital Atlas have also been repeated by various sources. Today, modern technology and search engines can and will find the most obscure details from centuries of botanical literature, with no ability to distinguish valid from erroneous contexts.
