(Speech and Hearing) ============================================================== Abstract A total of 40 subjects participated in the study, divided into two groups. Group I consisted of elderly population (mean age 60.3 years) and Group II consisted of young adults (mean age 22.1years). Superimposed line drawing pictures were presented in semantically ignored and control negative priming conditions. Reaction time was measured for verbal responses in each condition by using DmDx software. The results showed no significant negative priming effect in older individuals. Results are discussed with reference to ‘spreading inhibition’ in semantic memory networks, analogous to that of ‘spreading activation’ (Collins & Loftus, 1975). The reason behind the absence of negative priming in older adults may be attributed to the deficit in the spreading inhibition system and reduced information processing efficiency. Introduction Normal aging often refers to the most common or usually encountered functional state of the nervous system in a population of older individuals (Civil & Whitehouse, 1991). It is associated with special physical, emotional and social burdens imposed by mental decay in later life and a general wear and tear at anatomical and functional levels. (Speech and Hearing) Negative Priming in Aging Population 1 Normal aging is accompanied by changes in the ability to process, understand and use language. There is no global decline in linguistic functions. However, decline in certain cognitive functions like attention, memory and reaction time has been documented. These cognitive changes impinge on linguistic abilities leading to difficulties in word retrieval process (Kempler, 1992; Maxim, 1999) decline in complex discourse processes (Ulatowastia, 1985), slight diminution in language performance in terms of use of semantic information, structures and error of reference. Attention is the core cognitive processes involved in language production and comprehension (James, 1980). If there is finite attentional capacity which reduces with increasing age, then larger attentional demands will lead to larger age related deficits (Hasher & Zacks, 1988). Aging persons have been shown increased difficulty with selective attention and may attend to more irrelevant details than younger persons (Hamm & Hasher, 1990; Hartman & Hasher, 1990; McDowd, Oseas-Kreger, & Filion, 1995). Selective attention refers to the ability to both focus on information of relevance to the organism and exclude or ignore information that is task irrelevant. This can be accomplished by facilitating the processing of specific objects and/or inhibiting other task-irrelevant objects (Armstrong, 1997). Houghton & Tipper (1994) stated that selective attention is necessary in daily life as there are an infinite number of stimuli in the environment that must be either attended to or ignored. Initially, all stimuli are attended to and facilitated, but then irrelevant stimuli are quickly suppressed so that further processing of the attended stimuli is proceeded. One such task which is employed in understanding the efficient selective attention is negative priming task. The negative priming paradigm has served as a test tool by which age related differences in selective inhibition are measured. In the negative priming task, subjects are asked to respond to targets and ignore simultaneously presented distractor stimuli. The critical comparison is between the semantically ignored condition and the control condition experiments. In general, longer reaction times are obtained in ignored repetition condition than in control condition, defining negative priming effect. This negative priming effect is theorized to be the result of intact inhibitory mechanisms (May, Kane & Hasher, 1995; Neill & Valdes, 1996). If inhibitory mechanisms are disrupted or slowed relatedness of the prime distractors and probe presentation should not have a significant effect on reaction time to judge the probe target.

    L2/20-246 Teeth and bellies: a proposed model for encoding Book Pahlavi Roozbeh Pournader (WhatsApp) September 7, 2020 Background In Everson 2002, a proposal was made to encode a unified Avestan and Pahlavi script in the Unicode Standard. The proposal went through several iterations, eventually leading to a separate encoding of Avestan as proposed by Everson and Pournader 2007a, in which Pahlavi was considered non-unifiable with Avestan due to its cursive joining property. The non-cursive Inscriptional Pahlavi (Everson and Pournader 2007b) and the cursive Psalter Pahlavi (Everson and Pournader 2011) were later encoded too. But Book Pahlavi, despite several attempts (see the Book Pahlavi Topical Document list at https://unicode.org/L2/ topical/bookpahlavi/), remains unencoded. Everson 2002 is peculiar among earlier proposals by proposing six Pahlavi archigraphemes, including an ear, an elbow, and a belly. I remember from conversations with Michael Everson that he intended these to be used for cases when a scribe was just copying some text without understanding the underlying letters, considering the complexity of the script and the loss of some of its nuances to later scribes. They could also be used when modern scholars wanted to represent a manuscript as written, without needing to over-analyze potentially controversial readings. Meyers 2014 takes such a graphical model to an extreme, trying to encode pieces of the writing system, most of which have some correspondence to letters, but with occasional partial letters (e.g. PARTIAL SHIN and FINAL SADHE-PARTIAL PE). Unfortunately, their proposal rejects joining properties for Book Pahlavi and insists that “[t]he joining behaviour of the final stems of the characters in Book Pahlavi is more similar to cursive variants of Latin than to Arabic”.

    Psalms 119 & the Hebrew Aleph Bet - Part 17 The seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called “Pey” (sounds like “pay”). It has the sound of “p” as in “park”. Pey has the numeric value of 80. In modern Hebrew, the letter Pey can appear in three forms: Writing the Letter: Pey Note: Most people draw the Pey in two strokes, as shown. The dot, or “dagesh” mark means the pey makes the “p” sound, as in “park”. Note: The sole difference between the letter Pey and the letter Fey is the presence or absence of the dot in the middle of the letter (called a dagesh mark). When you see the dot in the middle of this letter, pronounce it as a "p"; otherwise, pronounce it as "ph" (or “f”). Five Hebrew letters are formed differently when they appear as the last letter of a word (these forms are sometimes called "sofit" (pronounced "so-feet") forms). Fortunately, the five letters sound the same as their non-sofit cousins, so you do not have to learn any new sounds (or transliterations). The Pey (pronounced “Fey” sofit has a descending tail, as shown on the left. The researchers have adopted two research strategies for underlining the assumed changes. This study has tried to get insight into the diminishing features of Punjabi lexicon by juxtaposing the current Punjabi lexicon with the lexicon used in the old Punjabi movies and songs. This has involved gleaning lexical items which are no longer used in the current public discourses from the old and famous Punjabi movies (Heer & MirzaSahiba) and their songs. To further substantiate the findings of the study, the researchers got a questionnaire filled by 110 educated Punjabi speakers who aged 40-50. In the questionnaire, the respondents were asked about their opinion regarding the perceived changes in Punjabi lexicon of public discourses that have occurred over the past few decades. The findings of the study reveal that there have occurred noticeable changes due to social, educational, industrial and technological advancement, and particularly the spread of electronic media in the Punjabi community in Pakistan.

    BHADARWAHI: A TYPOLOGICAL SKETCH Amitabh Vikram DWIVEDI Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, India [email protected] Abstract This paper is a summary of some phonological and morphosyntactice features of the Bhadarwahi language of Indo-Aryan family. Bhadarwahi is a lesser known and less documented language spoken in district of Doda of Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir State in India. Typologically it is a subject dominant language with an SOV word order (SV if without object) and its verb agrees with a noun phrase which is not followed by an overt post-position. These noun phrases can move freely in the sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence. The indirect object generally precedes the direct object. Aspiration, like any other Indo-Aryan languages, is a prominent feature of Bhadarwahi. Nasalization is a distinctive feature, and vowel and consonant contrasts are commonly observed. Infinitive and participle forms are formed by suffixation while infixation is also found in causative formation. Tense is carried by auxiliary and aspect and mood is marked by the main verb. Keywords: Indo-Aryan; less documented; SOV; aspiration; infixation Povzetek Članek je nekakšen daljši povzetek fonoloških in morfosintaktičnih značilnosti jezika badarvahi, enega izmed članov indo-arijske jezikovne družine. Badarvahi je manj poznan in slabo dokumentiran jezik z območja Doda v regiji Jammu v Kašmirju. Tipološko je zanj značilen dominanten osebek in besedni red: osebek, predmet, povedek. Glagoli se povečini ujemajo s samostalniškimi frazami, ki lahko v stavku zavzemajo katerikoli položaj ne da bi spremenile pomen stavka. Nadaljna značilnost jezika badarvahi je tudi to, da indirektni predmeti ponavadi stojijo pred direktnimi predmeti.
