A Whisper to a Roar presents the inspiring and dangerous work of democracy activists in five countries around the world - Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. The film’s subjects span the full spectrum of democratic activists: student leaders (Venezuela); young professionals (Egypt); currently active opposition politicians (Malaysia and Zimbabwe) and a former president (Ukraine). These heros tell their compelling personal stories of struggle with the oppressive regimes ruling their countries, now or in the past. The activists come from a variety of cultures and live on different continents, yet they all take enormous risks to pursue political freedom for their people and aspire for accountable government. In each country, the regimes and rulers that oppress their people use remarkably similar techniques and the activists’ most successful techniques are also remarkably alike, regardless of their circumstances. These schools have a total of more than 120,000 preK to 12th grade students. EARCOS also has 179 associate members—textbook and software publishers and distributors, universities, financial planners, architectural firms, insurance companies, youth organizations, etc.—and 36 individual members. Membership in EARCOS is open to elementary and secondary schools in East Asia which offer an educational program using English as the primary lan- guage of instruction, and to other organizations, institutions, and individuals interested in the objectives and purposes of the Council. General Information EARCOS holds one leadership conference every November and one teachers’ conference every March. In addition, EARCOS funds several weekend institutes hosted by member schools throughout East Asia. EARCOS also organizes a meeting for EARCOS heads of schools every April. EARCOS publishes its newsletter, the ET Journal, which is distributed to its members three times a year, and a directory of all of its members. P. 97 2 Aminah Kandar Refusing the Backseat: Women as Drivers of the Arab Uprisings Introduction "The people want the fall of the regime" is a slogan that reverberated throughout the Arab Spring uprisings in the last two years. These interconnected protests were comprised of men, women and even children who demanded freedom, economic equality and democracy.1 This paper examines the role of women in the protests and assesses the extent to which they drove the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen. As seen through video footage, photos, news reports and eye witness accounts, women played a frontline role in the protests that swept across the Arab world.2 In this paper, I suggest that women were active participants in the Tunisian uprisings; whereas, in Egypt and Yemen, they were among the main drivers of the uprisings.
