Written & Directed by Emmy Award Winner Ben Moses Produced by Amy Martinez & Ben Moses French philosopher Voltaire once cautioned, “It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong.” As the powerful new documentary A WHISPER TO A ROAR demonstrates, Voltaire’s warning has never been truer than it is today. This film explores the heroic efforts of courageous democracy activists in five countries – Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe - and the challenges posed by the dictators they oppose(d). The film's subjects span the full spectrum of democratic activists: student leaders (Venezuela); young professionals (Egypt); currently active opposition politicians (Malaysia and Zimbabwe) and a former president (Ukraine). They come from a variety of cultures and live on different continents, yet they all aspire for justice and accountability from their governments and take enormous risks to pursue political freedom for themselves and their fellow citizens. Shot over three years and finalized in July 2012 by award-winning filmmaker, Ben Moses, the film was inspired by the work of Stanford University’s Larry Diamond, author of “The Spirit of Democracy” and Director of Stanford University’s Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. It was funded by The Moulay Hicham Foundation, whose benefactor, Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco, is a renowned public intellectual and democracy advocate, particularly in regards to the Middle East. These schools have a total of more than 120,000 preK to 12th grade students. EARCOS also has 179 associate members—textbook and software publishers and distributors, universities, financial planners, architectural firms, insurance companies, youth organizations, etc.—and 36 individual members. Membership in EARCOS is open to elementary and secondary schools in East Asia which offer an educational program using English as the primary lan- guage of instruction, and to other organizations, institutions, and individuals interested in the objectives and purposes of the Council. General Information EARCOS holds one leadership conference every November and one teachers’ conference every March. In addition, EARCOS funds several weekend institutes hosted by member schools throughout East Asia. EARCOS also organizes a meeting for EARCOS heads of schools every April. EARCOS publishes its newsletter, the ET Journal, which is distributed to its members three times a year, and a directory of all of its members. P. 97 2 Aminah Kandar Refusing the Backseat: Women as Drivers of the Arab Uprisings Introduction "The people want the fall of the regime" is a slogan that reverberated throughout the Arab Spring uprisings in the last two years. These interconnected protests were comprised of men, women and even children who demanded freedom, economic equality and democracy.1 This paper examines the role of women in the protests and assesses the extent to which they drove the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen. As seen through video footage, photos, news reports and eye witness accounts, women played a frontline role in the protests that swept across the Arab world.2 In this paper, I suggest that women were active participants in the Tunisian uprisings; whereas, in Egypt and Yemen, they were among the main drivers of the uprisings.
