CaSToRC CaSToRC Computational-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC)
Central goal: To develop into a world-class research and educational institution serving the Eastern Mediterranean
Provide forefront computing resources to enable Cyprus and the larger Eastern Mediterranean research community to pursue state‐of‐the‐art computing‐related research, with portal function to US and EU - Partnership with NCSA, Univ. of Illinois, since 2007 - Established as a national facility represents Cyprus in PRACE - Strong collaborations, e.g. JSC joint High Energy Physics simulation lab - Provides computational resources for analysis of SESAME data
Create a research program of international caliber in computational science, engineering and scientific computing
Establish/promote educational programs in computation‐based science and technology in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean
CaSToRC Educational Program
• Dual PhD program with the University of Illinois - strengthens research activities with UIUC - develops joint research projects involving students
• CyI PhD program in Computational Science - started Jan. 2011
• CaSToRC Faculty Fellows Program - several positions for Regional and International Fellows, awarded competitively
• Summer training programs - started in 2009
• Opportunities within the EU project LinkSCEEM (C. Nicolaou)
CaSToRC The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe
Main objective: provide Computational Scientists and Engineers with a leading edge supercomputing infrastructure and corresponding world-class support for its most effective use. Activities: CaSToRC participates: • in the training and dissemination activities • in the development of Tier-0 applications and novel architectures in collaboration with CSCS and other PRACE members where GPUs/hybrid programming will be a major component
Infrastructure under development: First stage: • Cy-Tera as an entry level into EU ecosystem • Data repository in 1Pb range • User support and initialization of research divisions
Second Stage Tier-1 infrastructure

CaSToRC • Integration of 3 regional HPC centres (CyI/CaSToRC, BA, and NARSS) to optimally utilize computational, data and visualization resources create an integrated HPC platform
• Important HPC expertise (especially user support) brought to the region in a cost effective way by the engagement of NCSA and JSC
• Build up and engage regional user communities in computational sciences of international calibre, with focus on:
- Digital cultural heritage - Climate studies - Synchrotron radiation science
• Leverage of HPC infrastructure in Cyprus, Egypt & other countries in the region and build strong links to the European Research Area in accord with the European Neighbourhood Policy
• Contribute to the upgrade of the regional network connectivity
CaSToRC Cy-Tera Machine
Funding: 1.1 M Euro Operational in the Fall of 2011
A new research unit to host a high-performance computing infrastructure: ~50 Tflop/s peak performance - Support research activities of international caliber in computational science and engineering, and scientific computing. - Integrate Cyprus and the region with EU HPC activities in accord with government policy to transform Cyprus into a knowledge-based society - Open to scientists in the region
