A BOUT T HE C ONDUCTOR Ms. Donna Baker enjoyed thirty-three years of teaching music in the Rockwood School District. She is the former choral director of Eureka High School and Geggie Elementary, where she regularly participated in the St. Louis Suburban Honor Choir concerts. This is her second appearance as a guest conductor. A native of St. Louis, Ms. Baker holds a Bachelor of Science in Vocal and Instrumental Education from William Jewell College and a Master of Educational Processes from Maryville University. She is a current member of NAfME and MCDA. Ms. Baker is in her eleventh year of service as the Chancel Choir Director of Eureka United Methodist Church and also maintains a private piano and voice studio. Ms. Baker is the proud mother of three Mizzou graduates - Lane, Landan and Lance.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST Emily Bounds has been a K-12 music educator for 9 years, 6 of those in the Rockwood School District. She has served as private music teacher and currently is a church accompanist at The Presbyterian Church of Washington, MO. Emily is very excited to be an accompanist for this year’s SLSMEA Honor Choir. When she is not teaching, she loves to spend time with her family and friends. She has a 3 year old son, Carl, and is expecting her 2nd child in June of 2016. She is a professional member of NAFME and NEA.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Jerry Estes has taught for over 35 years, and is currently the vocal music teacher at in St. Louis. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Southwest Baptist University, and a Master of Music Degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Jerry began writing choral music over 25 years ago, and now has over 175 songs, books, and musicals in print with several publishers. He is a member of the National Association for Music Educators, ASCAP, and the American Choral Directors Association. He currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST Laura Lembeck has been a music educator and K-8 Vocal Music teacher for 30 years. She has been a private music teacher and accompanist all over the state of Missouri. Laura is very excited to be returning as the accompanist for this year’s SLSMEA Honor Choir. When she is not teaching, she loves to knit and spoil her grandson Adam. She is a professional member of NAFME, SLSMEA and NEA.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Victoria Baker Lottes graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received her Master of Music degree from Indiana University. For over 30 years she has taught orchestra and string classes in Missouri and Massachusetts public schools, most recently 20 years with the Parkway School District at the high school, middle school, and elementary levels. Since retiring from Parkway, she has been teaching violin and viola private and group lessons. In 2007 Mrs. Lottes joined the SIU- Edwardsville Suzuki Program faculty where she teaches violin and viola and directs the Viola Camerata. Others duties have included directing the Edwardsville Youth Orchestra and the Summer Suzuki String Camp. Mrs. Lottes has been a guest clinician and conductor for the Parkway All District MS Orchestra, the MS Orchestra of the Illinois Music Educators Association District VI Music Festival, the Pattonville HS Orchestra, and the Parkway Central MS Honors Orchestra. She has adjudicated for the Edwardsville, IL Solo and Ensemble Festival, coordinated the SIUE Suzuki Teacher Symposium, taught in the Webster University Community Music School Summer Orchestra Camp, and served as a clinician and orchestra director at several Suzuki Weekend Workshops. She has collaborated with Sandra Dackow in orchestra clinics for the Edwardsville Youth Orchestra. The Parkway West HS String Orchestra, under Mrs. Lottes’ direction, performed at the Missouri Music Educators Conferences at Tan-Tar-A in 1991 and 1997 and the Music Educators National Conference in New Orleans in 1992. Under her direction the Parkway South MS Full Orchestra performed at the 1986 Missouri Music Educators Conference as did the Parkway West MS Full Orchestra in 1988. Many of her students have participated in the Missouri All-State Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Mrs. Lottes was honored with the St. Louis Suburban Music Educators Merit Award in 1995 and Missouri American String Teachers Association’s Outstanding Public School String Educator Award in 1996. She holds membership in the National Association for Music Education, American String Teachers Association, and Suzuki Association of the Americas.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Paul G. Davis comes to the podium with an extensive professional background that spans both the classical and jazz idioms in conducting, performance and teaching. In constant demand as a conductor and clinician, his musical activities have taken him throughout the , Canada and Europe, including highly acclaimed performances with orchestras of Spartanburg, South Carolina, St. Cloud, Minnesota, the Webster University Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Orchestre d’Harmonie des Guides of Brussels, Belgium and the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra of Bulgaria. He was also the founder and Music Director of the Carolina Jazz Orchestra, and served five seasons as Music Director of the Spokane Jazz Orchestra in Washington State. His recent work in Missouri includes appearances conducting the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra of St. Louis and as a cover conductor for the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, along with appearances as guest conductor for the St. Louis All-Suburban Orchestra, Metro 8 Region Honor Orchestra, East Missouri Region Honor Band and Rockwood District Honor Band. Dr. Davis holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin, and currently resides in St. Louis where he is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Studies at Webster University.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Dr. Carrie Turner is the director of orchestras at Lee’s Summit South High School in the Kansas City area. Her work as conductor and teacher have taken her coast to coast working with top institutions and instructors in various styles and techniques in instrumental playing. Her passion for working creatively in different styles continues to inspire her to meet new artists and build collaborative relationships including artists Mark O’Connor, Tracy Silverman, and others. Dr. Turner earned a DMA degree in orchestral conducting from Texas Tech University and regularly performs throughout the United States. ARIANNA STRING QUARTET Hailed for their outstanding musicianship, the Arianna String Quartet has firmly established itself as one of America's finest chamber ensembles. They have appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia, with frequent visits to Brazil and South Africa. They have collaborated with many of the world’s finest musicians, including members of the Vermeer, Tokyo, Cleveland and Juilliard Quartets, and their live performances have been heard on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today,” and “Live from Music Mountain”, which broadcasts to 125 stations in the U.S. and to 35 countries. The ASQ has recorded for Albany Records and Urtext Digital Classics, and has a long-term contract with Centaur Records. Their most recent release of the two string quartets of Janácek, which has already received critical acclaim, is now available. The ASQ also looks forward to the continuation of the Arianna Chamber Music Festival, held on the campus of the - St. Louis, where they have been full-time faculty since 2000. The Arianna Quartet is also Ensemble-in-Residence at the Touhill Performing Arts Center in St. Louis, where they present their own series of concerts. Sought after for their highly effective approach to coaching and teaching as a quartet, the Arianna String Quartet has led the design and implementation of numerous chamber music programs including the Britt Quartet Academy, FEMUSC Intensive Chamber Music Program in Brazil and most recently, the University of Western Cape Chamber Music Institute, South Africa. In addition to intensive musical training for string quartets, this institute focuses on ideas of community, outreach and entrepreneurship, and helping students develop skills for a self-sustaining business that gives back to their communities through teaching and performances.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Cody Henry is an active trombonist in the St. Louis area. He attended college at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where he studied jazz and received a Bachelors and Masters. Mr. Henry believes versatility is a strength as a professional musician and therefore plays in a variety of styles from jazz and classical to hip-hop and R&B. He has performed with many notable musicians including Terrell Stafford, Conrad Herwig, Dave Steinmeyer, Jim Pugh, Dennis Mackrel, Clay Jenkins, Dave Bennett, Reggie Thomas, Patrick Sheridan, Jon-Erik Kellso, Vince Giordano, Terence Blanchard, Randy Brecker and Russell Gunn. For the last few years, Mr. Henry has been touring jazz festivals occasionally with Wally's Warehouse Waifs, a band that covers everything from traditional jazz to Rock and Roll. He has also performed with Motown legends such as The Temptations, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and The Four Tops. Along with performing, Mr. Henry is an active jazz clinician, having contributed to the Jazz St. Louis program since 2008. He also lent his expertise to the Birch Creek Music Academy and the Jim Widner summer jazz camps. While attending SIUE, Mr. Henry has explored a niche in big band and small group arranging/composing. In recent years, he has also made himself "gig ready" on the euphonium and tuba and built up a large studio of low brass musicians all over the St. Louis area. Mr. Henry has made Godfrey, IL his home where he lives with his wife, Tami (also a trombonist!) his one-year old daughter, Zoe, and his dog, Basie.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Garrett Schmidt, Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, teaches jazz trumpet, jazz arranging, jazz combo, and directs the Concert Jazz Band. Before moving back to Illinois, Garrett was an active musician in New York City, playing at Shapeshifter Lab, Somethin’ Jazz Club, 54 Below, Tea Lounge, The Garage, and Radio City Music Hall. Garrett is an active clinician and performer. He has performed all over the the world with the Maria Schneider Orchestra(Tokyo Blue Note, Jazz Standard, University of Maryland, Elmhurst Jazz Festival, Barcelona, Luxembourg, Vienna, Zürich, Geneva, Basel). He has also performed/toured with the Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project, John LaBarbera Big Band, Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Frankie Valli, CDZA, T-Pain, and Grease Das Musical. In 2014, Garrett performed 8 shows a week with the Broadway production of ‘Cabaret’ at Studio 54. As a member of this production, he had the opportunity to play on both the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Today Show. Garrett holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Eastern Illinois University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR

Robert J. Altman, Jr. is currently in his 39th year teaching (the last 18 at Hazelwood Central High School). Received his Music Education degree (BME- Trumpet) from Central Methodist University in 1976 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT) in 1984 from Southeast Missouri State University while serving as the graduate assistant to Dr. Robert M. Gifford (retired).His concert bands have performed at the Missouri Music Educators Association annual conference/clinic in 1983, 1988 and 1992. He presented his Master’s Thesis “A Study to Ascertain the Commonly Preferred Elements in a Brass Warm-up Routine” at the research session at the annual MMEA conference in 1986 and was a presenter to the Student-MENC session in 1990 on “Recruiting for Success”.

Mr. Altman has been on 12 European Tours (1990-2014) with the Missouri Ambassadors of Music as a staff member, Jazz Band Director, Concert Band Director and Tour Director. His professional affiliations include NAfME, MENC, NEA, MBA, Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Beta Mu.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR Joseph Manfredo is an Associate Professor of Music for the School of Music at Illinois State University. At ISU, Manfredo is the Coordinator of Music Education and teaches undergraduate courses in instrumental music education. In addition, he is coordinator of the student teaching program. Originally from the Chicago area, Manfredo received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University, where he studied clarinet with Dr. Earl Boyd and piano with Dr. Catherine Smith. His graduate studies included a Master of Arts Degree in Instrumental Conducting from EIU and a Doctorate of Music Education from the University of Illinois. During his doctoral residency, Manfredo was awarded the band conducting internship to study with the legendary Dr. Harry Begian. In addition, he also studied with Gary Smith and James Curnow. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the Fritz Thelan Prize by the International Society for the Promotion and Investigation of Wind Music (IGEB) in 1994. The Thelan Prize was for “the outstanding American doctoral dissertation on the wind band, 1990 – 1994”.

Professor Manfredo is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. He has conducted various All-State Bands and Honor Bands throughout the United States and Canada. His collegiate bands have been selected to perform at national, regional, and state conferences. Since August 2011, he has been conductor of the Festival Band for the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. Manfredo has presented lectures and clinics at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, national conferences for the National Association for Music Educators, College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, the Instrumental Music Teacher Educators Biennual Colloquium, and the Conn-Selmer Institute. He has made presentations at state music conferences in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, and internationally in China, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Portugal, and Brazil. Manfredo has published journal articles in the Groves Dictionary of Music, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Music Educators Journal, Journal of Music Teacher Education, The Instrumentalist, Illinois Music Educators Journal, and the Alta Musica series. In addition, he was asked to write The Conductor’s Manual for the Essentials of Musicianship series published by Hal Leonard. He also serves as the chief editor of the MitteilungsBlatt, one of the publications for IGEB, the International Society for the Promotion and Investigation of Wind Music; and he is on the editorial board for the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE).
