Two Milestone Retirements BY PHOEBE RUESS In the spring of 2017, two great women — Mrs. Dodd and Mrs. Nangle — retired from Forsyth. The Nangle and Dodd families’ tenure at Forsyth School added up to a combined total of 63 years.

Barbara Nangle Mrs. Nangle retired from Forsyth School in May after teaching fifth grade for 23 years. Despite her long tenure, she was not the first Nangle to come to Forsyth. Son Tim enrolled in 1982, and his siblings followed. All four Nangle children graduated from Forsyth: Tim, FS ’89, Ellen, FS ’91, John, FS ’93, and David FS ’98. Mrs. Nangle began her career as a practicing attorney. At Forsyth, her leadership roles include serving as Co-President of the Forsyth Family Organization from 1987-1988 and as a Forsyth School Trustee from 1989-1992. After earning her MAT in Education at Washington University, Mrs. Nangle joined the Forsyth faculty in 1993. We celebrated Mrs. Nangle’s retirement at a reception that included her in-town family members and colleagues past and present. Toasts from Upper Division Director Darel Shelton, retired Head Rebecca Glenn, and two video tributes from past teaching partners Sharon Stearns and Molly Liberto, and more, captured the esteem in which we hold Mrs. Nangle and the love and admiration of her colleagues.

Kay Dodd Staff member Kay Dodd is the last of the Dodd family to retire from Forsyth. Long time teaching partner Anne Reinholdt with Mrs. Dodd’s daughter, son, and husband all worked at Forsyth, and her Barb Nangle and her daughter Ellen Borowiak, FS ’91 grandchildren attended the School. There have been Dodd family members working at Forsyth School for the past 28 years of Forsyth’s 55 years, to date. Mrs. Dodd’s daughter Cheryl Rhodes came first. She joined the Forsyth administration in 1989 as Director of Business Affairs, and her brother Rick began working then, as well, as a soccer coach and camp counselor while he pursued graduate studies. Their father Richard Dodd, Sr., always known to all as Mr. Dodd, served as Forsyth’s Director of Maintenance from 1991-2010. Managing Forsyth’s facilities in those early days at Forsyth involved a lot of do-it-yourself maintenance – remember we were a 30-year-old start-up school in 3 old houses. The kids remember Mr. Dodd for the after-school woodworking classes he offered in his Dunbar House basement woodwork shop, and the golf cart he drove around campus with his tools. He was, quite simply, beloved.

The late Rick Dodd (by then, he had earned his MBA) took over as Director of Business Affairs in 1994, succeeding his sister who moved to the East coast. When he left Forsyth in 2004, Rick had seen the School through a The Grade 5 teachingi team in 2010: John McGinley, huge campus expansion: the acquisition of Gerdine House and Last House, Sharon Stearns, Barb Nangle and Kathy Becker construction of The Rand Center and the sport court. We wish Mrs. Nangle and It is not an overstatement to say that Mrs. Dodd’s retirement marks the end of Mrs. Dodd the very best in the years to come. an era. You could look at Forsyth’s campus today and assume it was developed according to a finely tuned plan with great foresight. In fact, that is not the case. Forsyth has been an entrepreneurial venture, built by seizing real estate opportunities when presented, and relying on resourcefulness to realize these opportunities. The Dodd family is very much a part of that history. They played a significant role in building Forsyth, especially our one-of-a-kind campus. Welcome to Our Newest Alums | Class of 2017

> 2011 > 2017 LOOKING QUITE A BIT TALLER, THE FORSYTH CLASS OF 2011 returned to campus in May for a reunion to say good bye to their favorite elementary school teachers and each other. These alumni had impressive college news to share, including Harvard, Yale, Colgate, American University in Washington, D.C, University of Virginia, Babson, Carnegie Mellon, and more. Here are just some of the accomplishments of the Forsyth Class of 2011: ° 8 National Merit scholars–nearly 20% of the class ° State champion athletes (track & field, soccer, football, lacrosse) ° College athletes ° Jefferson Scholars Award ° President’s Volunteer Service Award ° Cum Laude graduates During the assembly, Nate Clinton, FS ’11, and his cousin Myles Clinton, Grade 6, did a high beam demonstration in front of all of their classmates and friends.
