2016 Neighborhood Profile Covenant Blu/Grand Center Blu/Grand Covenant Washington University Medical Center A partnership between BJC HealthCare and Washington University in St. Louis 1 Covenant Blu/Grand Center Neighborhood Introduction The Covenant Blu- Grand Center neigh- borhood is located at the geographic center of the City of St. Louis, home to a dynamic and diverse array of anchor institutions, residents , and venues for the arts. The neighborhood suffered from precipitous decline in the latter half of the 20th century while dealing with significant structural changes, but has been engaging in revitalization efforts with its stakeholder institutions since the 1980s, achieving great progress along the way. Covenant Blu- Grand Center is located just north of Saint Louis University, centered around the Grand Center Arts District on North Grand Blvd, home to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Powell Symphony Hall, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and a host of additional arts, media, and civic institutions and venues. With the motto, “The Intersection of Art & Life”, Grand Center is arguably the center of the high arts community in St. Louis while presenting a skyline of architectural landmarks recognizable and visible to St. Louisans throughout the city. In the early decades of the 20th Century, the area was known as the social hub of Saint Louis, with the city’s 2 grandest social clubs, fraternities, hotels, and classic theatres. However, by the middle of the century, these venues fell out of fashion as society moved westward and many were shuttered. As private investment withdrew from the City, the urban fabric of the neighborhood surrounding the Grand Center Arts District experienced great decline.

  • OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We Can’T Imagine a More Perfect Show to Give Our 2016–2017 Season a Great Launch (If You’Ll Pardon the Pun)
OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. It’s a season we’re extremely proud and excited to share with all of you. DOUGLAS GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. We’re also proud to welcome the outstanding creative team that has made October Sky a reality. Director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell is an artist whose work we’ve long admired, whose skill in staging is matched by her deft touch with actors. She’s truly a perfect fit for this heartwarming and triumphant show.

  • The Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship Presented by the Sports Commission Associates
THE CARL FRICKS SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED BY THE SPORTS COMMISSION ASSOCIATES PAST RECIPIENTS | 2009 - 2017 LEOR GOLDFARB - 2017 LADUE HIGH SCHOOL The Sports Commission Associates awarded Leor Goldfarb its top Sportsmanship Scholarship honor for 2017. The Ladue varsity wrestling and lacrosse captain will receive $10,000 to begin his college education. Leor’s class, humility and selflessness eclipse any feat he has achieved on the field or on the mat. In the semifinals of the district wrestling tournament, Leor was down seven points to his opponent from Hannibal. Late in the second period, Leor was injured by an illegal slam from his opponent. The referee gave him two options: He could have his opponent disqualified for the illegal move and automatically advance to the state finals or forfeit the match and allow his opponent to advance. Leor chose to forfeit the match and let his opponent move on to state. In a letter to the Ladue superintendent, Hannibal coach Derek Greening said, “I am not sure how many individuals and coaches would make the same decision. It takes an enormous amount of character and class to make a decision like this. In 16 years of coaching, I have seen many students default for much less to guarantee themselves a win.” This is just one instance that exemplifies Leor’s sportsmanship. He’s known for being supportive of teammates and opponents alike, and as relayed by his athletic director, Leor “knows what happens in sports is greater than the outcome of the game or match being held.” MATT FERENCE - 2017 LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL Matt Ference played football and baseball at Lafayette High School, but it is the way he channeled his talent into remarkable kindness that makes him worthy of the Sportsmanship Scholarship.

  • Illinois Student Assistance Commission Announces 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars
Illinois Student Assistance Commission announces 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars December 5 2016 3:41 PM More Than 19,300 high school students recognized for outstanding academic achievement Deerfield, Ill. – The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is pleased to announce the names of the 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars. This year’s recipients join the ranks of other exceptional Illinois high school students honored with this prestigious designation. First introduced in 1958, Illinois State Scholars are recognized for their superior academic achievement. State Scholars rank in approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state. Honorees are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank. “I applaud all of the 2017-18 state scholars for their hard work and outstanding academic performance,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC executive director. “Students have a lot to contend with as they move through high school—from increased testing to extracurricular activities to highly competitive college admissions. Kudos to these students and also to the teachers, parents, coaches and other mentors who contributed to their success and helped them navigate a path towards college and career success.” While this recognition does not include a monetary prize, congratulatory letters from ISAC have been sent to honorees, and the agency has provided personalized Certificates of Achievement to each high school for distribution. A list of current Illinois State Scholars can also be found on ISAC’s website. ISAC encourages students interested in attending college next fall to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible to determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid.
