A brief history of the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition Mary Strauss, co-owner of the Fox Theatre, wanted to give the opportunity for 2015 – Tiala Taylor, Fort Zumwalt North St. Louis’ talented teens to perform on the Fox stage. In 1985, long before High School, contemporary dancer performing her own original “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol” Mary created the St. Louis Teen choreography titled “A Mother’s Love.” Talent Showcase to annually recognize and encourage talented teenagers in the performing arts to compete, win prizes and scholarships, and performance opportunities. The competition selection process and final event on the Fox stage gave participants the anticipation, hard work and thrill of a Broadway show! The neighborhood suffered from precipitous decline in the latter half of the 20th century while dealing with significant structural changes, but has been engaging in revitalization efforts with its stakeholder institutions since the 1980s, achieving great progress along the way. Covenant Blu- Grand Center is located just north of Saint Louis University, centered around the Grand Center Arts District on North Grand Blvd, home to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Powell Symphony Hall, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and a host of additional arts, media, and civic institutions and venues. With the motto, “The Intersection of Art & Life”, Grand Center is arguably the center of the high arts community in St. Louis while presenting a skyline of architectural landmarks recognizable and visible to St. Louisans throughout the city. In the early decades of the 20th Century, the area was known as the social hub of Saint Louis, with the city’s 2 grandest social clubs, fraternities, hotels, and classic theatres. However, by the middle of the century, these venues fell out of fashion as society moved westward and many were shuttered. As private investment withdrew from the City, the urban fabric of the neighborhood surrounding the Grand Center Arts District experienced great decline.

    Education Program Handbook for Teachers WELCOME We look forward to welcoming you and your students to the Sheldon Concert Hall for one of our Education Programs. We hope that the perfect acoustics and intimacy of the hall will make this an important and memorable experience. ARRIVAL AND PARKING We urge you to arrive at The Sheldon Concert Hall 15 to 30 minutes prior to the program. This will allow you to be seated in time for the performance and will allow a little extra time in case you encounter traffic on the way. Seating will be on a first come-first serve basis as schools arrive. To accommodate school schedules, we will start on time. The Sheldon is located at 3648 Washington Boulevard, just around the corner from the Fox Theatre. Parking is free for school buses and cars and will be available on Washington near The Sheldon. Please enter by the steps leading up to the concert hall front door. If you have a disabled student, please call The Sheldon (314-533-9900) to make arrangement to use our street level entrance and elevator to the concert hall. CONCERT MANNERS Please coach your students on good concert manners before coming to The Sheldon Concert Hall. Good audiences love to listen to music and they love to show their appreciation with applause, usually at the end of an entire piece and occasionally after a good solo by one of the musicians. Urge your students to take in and enjoy the great music being performed. Food and drink are prohibited in The Sheldon Concert Hall.

    OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid.     THE CARL FRICKS SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED BY THE SPORTS COMMISSION ASSOCIATES PAST RECIPIENTS | 2009 - 2017 LEOR GOLDFARB - 2017 LADUE HIGH SCHOOL The Sports Commission Associates awarded Leor Goldfarb its top Sportsmanship Scholarship honor for 2017. The Ladue varsity wrestling and lacrosse captain will receive $10,000 to begin his college education. Leor’s class, humility and selflessness eclipse any feat he has achieved on the field or on the mat. In the semifinals of the district wrestling tournament, Leor was down seven points to his opponent from Hannibal. Late in the second period, Leor was injured by an illegal slam from his opponent. The referee gave him two options: He could have his opponent disqualified for the illegal move and automatically advance to the state finals or forfeit the match and allow his opponent to advance. Leor chose to forfeit the match and let his opponent move on to state. In a letter to the Ladue superintendent, Hannibal coach Derek Greening said, “I am not sure how many individuals and coaches would make the same decision. It takes an enormous amount of character and class to make a decision like this. In 16 years of coaching, I have seen many students default for much less to guarantee themselves a win.” This is just one instance that exemplifies Leor’s sportsmanship. He’s known for being supportive of teammates and opponents alike, and as relayed by his athletic director, Leor “knows what happens in sports is greater than the outcome of the game or match being held.” MATT FERENCE - 2017 LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL Matt Ference played football and baseball at Lafayette High School, but it is the way he channeled his talent into remarkable kindness that makes him worthy of the Sportsmanship Scholarship.

This year’s recipients join the ranks of other exceptional Illinois high school students honored with this prestigious designation. First introduced in 1958, Illinois State Scholars are recognized for their superior academic achievement. State Scholars rank in approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state. Honorees are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank. “I applaud all of the 2017-18 state scholars for their hard work and outstanding academic performance,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC executive director. “Students have a lot to contend with as they move through high school—from increased testing to extracurricular activities to highly competitive college admissions. ISAC encourages students interested in attending college next fall to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible to determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid.

Scholarships given include the KG Summers Buick Toyota Scholarship, sponsored by KC Summers Buick Toyota Dealership and awarded to an honors student at EIU; Dorothy Davis Bunge Scholarship, established in 1990 by Gordon C. Bunge, and awarded to full-time students with a 3.5 GPA from DuPage County who participate in the honors program; Rachael Richardson Scholarship, established in 1991 by the estate of Rachael Richardson, given to a student enrolled in the honors programs; and the Continuing Student Scholarship, presented to students in the honors programs who remain in good standing. Also given were university and departmental honors to Spring and Fall 2000 graduating seniors.
